A soundbase is a wider, deeper speaker cabinet designed to sit beneath the TV, with the TV resting on top if its stand fits and the base supports its weight. The key difference is placement and fit—not a guaranteed difference in sound quality.
Soundbar vs. soundbase at a glance
| Factor | Soundbar | Soundbase |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Long and shallow | Wider and deeper, with a low-profile cabinet |
| Typical placement | In front of or below the TV; some can be wall-mounted | Under the TV, which can sit on top if the stand fits and the base supports its weight |
| Bass setup | Varies by model: it may have built-in woofers, a separate subwoofer, or both | Varies by model; the name alone does not tell you how bass is handled |
| Expansion | Some models support a separate subwoofer or rear speakers; compatibility varies | Check the specific model for supported additions |
| Main fit check | Available space in front of the TV or a suitable wall location | TV stand footprint, supported weight, and furniture depth |
These are broad form-factor distinctions, not guarantees about any particular product. ZVOX Audio describes its soundbar systems as suitable for shelf placement or wall mounting, while its soundbase systems are designed for a TV to sit on top. ZVOX’s explanation of soundbars and soundbases was modified August 26, 2025. Samsung’s guide describes several soundbar configurations, but those examples concern Samsung products. Samsung’s soundbar buying guide is UK-specific.

Where each one goes—and what must fit
Soundbar: in front of the TV or on the wall
A soundbar’s shallow profile can suit a shelf, TV cabinet, or wall-mounted installation. Measure the available space and check that the speaker will not block the TV screen, remote sensor, or other equipment. Wall mounting depends on the specific soundbar and its mounting provisions.

Soundbase: beneath the TV, with the TV on top
A soundbase uses the TV’s footprint as part of its placement, so the stand’s size and shape matter. ZVOX says the TV’s pedestal must fit within the soundbase’s top footprint without overhanging. Also check the base’s stated weight limit and the furniture’s depth and load capacity before putting the TV on it.

ZVOX lists “24”–42” wide and 11.5”–16.5” deep” as typical soundbase dimensions on its manufacturer category page. These are the company’s description, not a universal standard or a substitute for checking the dimensions of a particular model. ZVOX’s soundbase guide also characterizes many competing units as “27” wide x 14” deep x 3–4” tall”; that, too, is the manufacturer’s description rather than an independent market survey.
Bass and surround features depend on the model
Neither category guarantees a particular bass arrangement. ZVOX says its soundbar and soundbase systems have built-in subwoofers. Samsung’s soundbar guide, by contrast, includes products with built-in woofers, separate subwoofers, and rear speakers. These examples show why the product’s specifications matter more than its category name.

If you want a separate subwoofer or rear speakers, check that the exact speaker model supports them and whether they are included or sold separately. Samsung notes that not all of its soundbars support add-on subwoofers or rear speakers. A soundbar may offer a path to a larger system, but expansion is not universal.

Compare the audio outputs on the TV with the inputs on the speaker before choosing either form factor. HDMI ARC, optical/digital audio, and analog connections appear in product guidance, but availability depends on the exact devices. Confirm that the TV and speaker share a usable connection and check how volume and power will be controlled. Which should you choose?
Choose a soundbar when placement flexibility matters
- Your TV is wall-mounted or you want the option to mount the speaker.
- You have room in front of the TV but not enough depth for a soundbase beneath it.
- You want to consider a model-specific setup with a separate subwoofer or rear speakers.
Choose a soundbase when the TV can safely sit on it
- Your TV’s stand fits completely on the soundbase’s top surface.
- The soundbase supports the TV’s weight, and your furniture has enough depth and load capacity.
- You prefer one integrated unit beneath the TV rather than a speaker positioned separately.
Soundbar versus soundbase is chiefly a placement and system-design decision. The shape alone does not establish which product will sound better; compare the exact models and their features for your needs. MediaMarkt Netherlands also frames the distinction around form and setup in its June 23, 2026 comparison. MediaMarkt’s comparison is in Dutch.

Before you buy: a fit-and-compatibility checklist
- Measure the soundbase’s top surface against the full footprint of the TV stand; allow no overhang if following ZVOX’s guidance.
- Check the soundbase’s weight limit against the TV’s weight, and confirm that the furniture can support both.
- Measure cabinet depth and height, or confirm the planned wall location and mounting method for a soundbar.
- Compare the TV’s audio outputs with the speaker’s inputs and verify the connection you intend to use.
- Check the exact model’s specifications for a built-in or separate subwoofer and compatibility with any rear speakers you want.
