Sony’s reported consultation with development partners is better late than never—but it comes after the company publicly committed to ending disc production for new PlayStation games from January 2028. The consultation is not confirmed by Sony, and there is no evidence that the policy has changed. The distinction matters: listening can still improve how a decision is implemented, but it is not the same as reopening it.
What Sony announced—and when
On 1 July 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it would discontinue production of physical game discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. Sony said games released after that point would be available through PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only. The announcement does not affect games already released or games releasing before January 2028 in disc format. Sony’s announcement

Sony presented the change as a response to consumer preferences and a broader shift from physical discs to digital media. It did not publish a sales-share figure or a quantified estimate of the effects on consumers, retailers, or developers. That rationale is Sony’s stated explanation, not an independently established measure of what players want.
What the reported consultation does—and does not—tell us
A 24 September 2026 Push Square report said Sony was apparently surveying development partners about its physical-disc decision. The report attributed the claim to YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead, who said he had heard it from contacts; the account reached Push Square through a Reddit post. This is a report about an alleged survey, not a Sony announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
The survey’s full wording, sample, and results are not publicly established in the cited reporting, and it is unknown whether the consultation could affect the plan. Developers might support the change, as Push Square noted, so even a real survey would not by itself demonstrate that Sony is reconsidering. No reversal has been announced.
The sequence still invites criticism: Sony announced the policy in July, while the consultation claim surfaced in September. Asking partners for feedback after a public decision can help uncover implementation problems, but it is less persuasive as evidence that affected parties had meaningful input before the direction was set. The “better late than never” case is therefore about the value of listening now—not proof that Sony is changing course.

Sony says it intends to proceed cautiously
At Sony Group’s FY2026 first-quarter earnings briefing, CFO Lin Tao cited the broader progress of digitisation across content as the biggest factor behind the decision. Tao acknowledged strong views and the community’s emotional connection to games, and said Sony would continue exploring how to engage gamers in a future digital ecosystem. As reported by Gematsu, Tao said: “So when we think about the future, and we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward.”
That is listening language alongside an expressed intention to move forward. It does not establish that Sony will keep making discs, nor that partner or consumer feedback will change the 2028 plan.

What players stand to lose—and what digital distribution offers
Physical and digital releases serve different needs. A disc can be lent, traded, resold, or collected; a physical copy can also matter to players who have limited or unreliable internet access. Digital distribution centralizes availability through PlayStation Store and avoids the manufacturing lead time associated with discs. Reporting also describes publisher advantages such as being able to finalize games later and avoiding used-game resale, but does not quantify Sony’s economics or the overall effects on the industry. Push Square’s report
Physical copies are not a guarantee that a game works fully offline: that depends on the individual release and its requirements. PSA, a grading company with an interest in physical collecting, says some discs can be played without an additional download. Its figures are sample-specific, not universal evidence:

- PSA also says it has graded more than 44,000 physical media examples across PlayStation platforms. This is the company’s count, not a market-wide measure.
These numbers describe PSA’s reported tests and grading activity; they do not establish what share of all games is available on disc, how many players prefer physical media, or what future releases will require. PSA’s commentary

Retailers are part of the question, but the impact is unmeasured
Physical game sales involve retailers as well as publishers and players, so the change raises a legitimate question about high street businesses. In a written answer published 2 September 2026, UK minister Kate Dearden said the government had not made a specific assessment of the potential effect on high street retailers. The answer described the decision as commercial and encouraged consumers to give feedback directly to businesses; it is not an estimate of likely losses or gains. UK parliamentary answer

Why consultation still matters
A late consultation can still be useful if it changes the details that remain open: how partners and players are engaged, how digital-only releases are communicated, and how Sony accounts for people who value lending, resale, collecting, or dependable offline access. But a credible process should make clear who was consulted, what questions were asked, and how the answers informed the decision. None of those details is established by the report of the survey.
Sony has a stated rationale for moving toward digital distribution, but the public evidence cited here does not quantify the trade-offs or show that physical releases have become irrelevant. Until Sony confirms the consultation and explains what it can influence, the fairest reading is that the company has heard concerns while maintaining its announced direction—not that it has reopened the decision.
