The reported design resembles aspects of the PS5 Pro’s cooling approach, but no gaming-load temperature tests establish that the revised Slim runs cooler or quieter.
What changed in the PS5 Slim refresh?
Teardown reporting from Notebookcheck, published October 1, 2026, and TweakTown, published October 2, 2026, describes changes found in one Marvel’s Wolverine PS5 Slim Digital console. The teardown technician, Modyfikator89, identified an EDM-051 motherboard. The reports describe a revised layout, a changed protective area around the APU’s liquid-metal interface, a different heatsink construction or material, and more accessible CR2032 CMOS battery placement.

Those are observations from a specific disassembled unit, not a full specification published by Sony. Sony had not announced or explained this particular change in the cited reporting.
Does the new PS5 Slim run cooler?
That has not been demonstrated. TweakTown explicitly reports that the teardown did not include gaming-load temperature measurements or a comparative thermal test. The cooling arrangement may be intended to improve liquid-metal containment or heat management, but an apparent design goal is not proof of lower temperatures, reduced fan noise, or better performance.

“PS5 Pro-like” refers to similarities in the reported cooling and liquid-metal containment approach. It does not establish that the Slim uses the same heatsink, delivers the same cooling capacity, or performs like a PS5 Pro. No relevant temperature or acoustic figures are reported.
How is this different from the 2025 PS5 Slim revision?
The October 2026 EDM-051 teardown is separate from the CFI-2116 PS5 Slim revision reported in 2025. PlayStation LifeStyle’s September 29, 2025 report described that earlier revision as adopting a PS5 Pro-like liquid-metal containment feature. The 2026 report describes another internal change, including the motherboard, heatsink and CMOS battery access; the two updates should not be treated as one model change.

How can you tell which PS5 Slim revision you have?
The reporting does not identify a reliable exterior marker, packaging label or retailer code that guarantees an EDM-051 board. It says the manual did not reflect the changes, and that confirming the board revision requires inspection inside the console. A listing that simply says “PS5 Slim” is therefore not evidence that it contains these revised internals.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Opening the console to check the board is not a practical buyer-identification method. Sony’s CFI-21XX instruction manual says there are no user-serviceable components inside and warns that unauthorized modification may void the warranty. For a purchase, rely on the seller’s written model details and return policy rather than opening a new console.

What should buyers make of the refresh?
- If cooling is your deciding factor: wait for independent temperature and noise comparisons before treating the revision as a proven improvement.
- If repair access matters: the reported CMOS battery placement is easier to reach during teardown, but this is not evidence that the console is intended for user servicing.
- If you need more storage: Sony’s CFI-21XX manual supports commercially available M.2 SSD storage expansion. That is an optional storage upgrade, not a cooling accessory or requirement.
The evidence supports describing an internal hardware revision observed in one teardown, with changes that appear aimed at cooling design and repair access. It does not yet support a claim that every newly sold PS5 Slim includes the parts or that those parts produce measurable gaming benefits.
