Sony cameras can now upload directly to Google Drive

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony enabling Google Drive upload support is a big quality-of-life improvement for anyone who shoots on-camera and hates the “card → reader → laptop → upload” routine.

In practice, the experience usually works through Sony’s mobile connection workflow: your camera sends files to a phone, and the phone uploads them to your Google Drive account using the appropriate authorization.

What it means when a Sony camera can upload directly to Google Drive

“Direct” here generally means you can initiate uploads from the camera interface while the camera is connected to your phone (or a mobile app workflow). The destination is Google Drive, and you don’t need to manually open Google Drive on a computer.

  • Multiple movie functions: Make time lapse movies or slow/quick motion videos without post processing
  • Tiltable LCD screen: customizable for vlogging, still photography or recording a professional film

Depending on the Sony model and the companion app available for that model, the upload behavior typically looks like:

  • Camera captures → Camera selects files
  • Camera connects to phone over Wi‑Fi
  • Phone uploads to Google Drive

Prerequisites (before you touch any settings)

Before you start, confirm you have the right building blocks. Most upload failures come from something small and fixable.

1) Supported Sony camera + app

Your Sony camera must support the mobile upload workflow that includes Google Drive as a destination. Check the companion app used for your camera generation (Sony’s camera control/upload ecosystem typically provides Google Drive integration where available).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2) A phone that can stay connected

Use a phone with:

  • Stable Wi‑Fi or consistent hotspot behavior (depending on the connection type)
  • Battery not in extreme saver (uploads get interrupted when background tasks are restricted)
  • Google Drive app installed or at least available for authorization flows

3) Google account with sufficient Drive storage

Google Drive will refuse uploads when you hit quota. Check your storage capacity and ensure the Google account you authorize is the one you expect.

Step-by-step: Set up Google Drive uploads from a Sony camera

Because Sony’s UI can vary by model and app version, the goal is consistent: connect camera to phone, authorize Google Drive, and enable upload settings. Follow in order.

1) Install and sign in on your phone

  1. Install the Sony companion app that manages your camera’s remote control and file transfer.
  2. Open the app and sign in (if it uses a Sony account or device-linked login).
  3. Confirm you can see the camera connection screen (if the app shows a camera list or pairing status, you should be able to reach it).

Also verify you’re signed into the correct Google account on your phone.

2) Connect the camera to the phone via Wi‑Fi

  1. Turn on the Sony camera.
  2. Open the camera’s Wi‑Fi / Network / Connection menu (wording varies).
  3. Select the option that starts the mobile connection (often shown as pairing with a smartphone).
  4. On the phone, go to the Sony app connection screen and select your camera.
  5. Wait until the app reports connection status (you should be able to browse or view the camera’s contents once connected).

If you’re using iOS or Android connection modes, keep the camera close to the phone and avoid locking the screen during transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3) Authorize Google Drive access

  1. In the Sony app, go to the upload or cloud destination settings.
  2. Select Google Drive as the upload destination.
  3. When prompted, confirm the Google account and complete the OAuth authorization.
  4. Return to the Sony app and confirm Drive appears as an enabled destination.

If you see an authorization prompt every time, permissions or cached session data may be failing—see troubleshooting below.

4) Choose upload destination and transfer behavior

Look for these kinds of settings in the Sony app and/or camera menus:

  1. Destination folder in Google Drive (some setups offer a default folder or allow picking a subfolder).
  2. What to upload: all images in a folder, selected items, or “new/unuploaded” only.
  3. File type handling: RAW vs JPEG, or “original size” vs a reduced copy (capabilities vary).
  4. Upload mode: manual select vs automatic background upload (if offered).

For best results, start with a smaller test upload (a few JPEGs) before committing to a full shoot library.

5) Upload from the camera

  1. On the camera, open the Play or Gallery view.
  2. Select the images/videos you want.
  3. Choose the Upload / Send / Cloud option (label varies by model).
  4. Select Google Drive as the destination if the camera asks again.
  5. Confirm the upload. Keep the camera powered (and avoid going out of Wi‑Fi range).

When successful, you should see files appear in your chosen Google Drive folder within a few minutes depending on file size and Wi‑Fi speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best practices for reliable uploads

  • Use JPEG for first tests to validate authorization and folder selection before uploading larger RAW files.
  • Keep the phone screen awake during transfers. iOS and Android power saving can interrupt long background uploads.
  • Use consistent naming and folders on Drive (if the Sony workflow lets you choose a subfolder, pick something like YYYY-MM-DD).
  • Avoid editing while uploading. If the app tries to re-process media, transfers can fail or duplicate.

Troubleshooting when uploads fail

When direct Drive uploads don’t work, don’t reinstall everything right away. Start with the failure point: authorization, connection, file selection, or quota.

Google Drive authorization errors

If you get errors like “can’t connect to Drive,” “authorization failed,” or repeated sign-in prompts:

  1. Open the Google account settings on your phone and confirm you’re still signed in.
  2. In your phone’s system browser, verify you can sign into Drive normally at https://drive.google.com.
  3. Re-authorize Google Drive inside the Sony app (remove the Google Drive destination and add it again).
  4. Check whether the app lost permission due to security updates (OAuth sessions can expire).

If you changed passwords recently, assume the authorization will need to be renewed.

Wi-Fi pairing or connection drops

For connection failures (camera won’t pair, transfer stops mid-way):

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn off and restart Wi‑Fi on both camera and phone.
  2. Forget and re-pair the camera from the phone’s Wi‑Fi settings (if your model uses Wi‑Fi direct behavior, this still helps reset stale sessions).
  3. Move closer to the phone and reduce interference (same room, fewer routers).
  4. Keep Bluetooth on/off consistent with what your Sony app expects. Some Sony workflows behave differently depending on whether the app is actively connected.

If you’re on a cellular network with a hotspot, test again on Wi‑Fi to rule out hotspot instability.

Uploads stall at a specific file

If multiple files fail but one always stalls, it’s usually a media-specific issue:

  1. Try uploading the same file from the camera by selecting only that one item.
  2. Test with an alternate file format (JPEG instead of RAW) for the same scene.
  3. Confirm the file is not corrupted (play it back on the camera).
  4. If the camera supports it, try using a different image size setting and retest.

Large video files can also exceed what the phone app buffers comfortably—try shorter clips first.

  • Beautiful color expression made simple with S-Cinetone color profile

Missing files or wrong format on Drive

If expected files don’t show up, confirm:

  • Correct Drive folder (the app may use a default destination).
  • Upload filter (some setups default to JPEG-only).
  • Camera selection (you might be sending only the “new” or “unuploaded” items).

On the phone, open the Sony app’s transfer log (if present) and compare success status to what’s shown in Drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account and storage problems

For quota-related failures:

  1. Check Google Drive storage status on the phone.
  2. Look for Drive errors that mention quota or cannot upload.
  3. Free space or switch to a different Drive account and re-authorize.

Also confirm you didn’t accidentally authorize a different Google profile than the one you regularly use.

App-version mismatches

If it worked last week and suddenly doesn’t:

  1. Update the Sony companion app to the latest version in the App Store / Google Play.
  2. Update the Google Drive app if your authorization flow uses it.
  3. Check whether your camera firmware needs an update (Sony occasionally changes network/cloud support behavior).

Alternatives if direct upload isn’t available on your model

Some Sony cameras may not expose Google Drive as a direct destination, or the feature may be limited by app support. You still have options.

Transfer to a phone, then upload to Google Drive

If the camera can transfer to the phone (but not to Drive directly), you can still get the end result with one extra step.

  1. Connect camera to phone via the Sony app.
  2. Export media to your phone’s Photos/Storage as the app allows.
  3. Use Google Drive to upload from your phone gallery/storage.

Use a computer sync workflow

For large RAW workflows, a computer-based pipeline may still be faster and more reliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Transfer from camera to a computer using USB or a card reader.
  2. Upload to Drive using the Drive desktop client (where supported) or a web upload.
  3. Automate with folder sync if you already run a backup routine.

Network/FTP workflows (if your model supports it)

Some Sony bodies support network protocols for file transfers. If your camera supports FTP/SMB, you can route files to a server and then into cloud storage.

  2. Use an automated upload job to push from the server to Google Drive.
  3. Be careful with permissions and file naming conventions.

Privacy and security considerations

When you authorize Google Drive, the Sony app receives OAuth access to create uploads and write files into your Drive.

  • Limit exposure: prefer using a dedicated Drive folder for camera uploads.
  • Review authorized apps: revoke access if you stop using the workflow.
  • Use secure networks: avoid public Wi‑Fi for initial pairing and large uploads.

For travel, consider turning off auto-upload behaviors if you’re worried about connectivity surprises.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting a laptop-free workflow without any device: most “direct” setups still depend on a phone as the bridge.
  • Authorizing the wrong Google account: always check which profile is active before authorizing Drive.
  • Uploading everything immediately: test with a few small JPEGs to confirm folder destination and permissions.
  • Running on low battery: camera shutdown mid-transfer can corrupt the session and leave partial uploads.
  • Forgetting storage quota: Drive quota can break uploads silently from the camera UI.

FAQs

Do I need the Google Drive app installed to upload from my Sony camera?

Often, the upload destination authorization uses a Google sign-in flow that works even if the Drive app isn’t used day-to-day. Installing Google Drive can still help avoid authorization friction. If authorization prompts break, having the Drive app installed (and updated) is a practical fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will RAW files upload to Google Drive as RAW, or will it convert them?

That depends on the Sony workflow settings and camera support. Many setups allow choosing which file types to upload (for example, JPEG-only vs original files). Check the upload settings where you select Google Drive and confirm the file type handling.

Why do I see fewer files in Drive than I selected on the camera?

Common causes include an upload filter (JPEG-only), selecting only new/unuploaded items, or a connection drop that aborts the transfer. Check the Sony app transfer log and confirm the destination folder and filters.

Can I choose a specific Google Drive folder for uploads?

Many Sony cloud workflows let you select a destination folder or uses a default folder. If you don’t see a folder selector, you may need to rely on a default Drive directory created by the workflow.

Is this faster than uploading via a computer?

For small batches, it’s convenient. For huge RAW libraries, a computer pipeline is usually faster and more predictable. The “direct to Drive” feature is best for quick sharing and backup while you’re away from your computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

Sony’s Google Drive upload support is most valuable when you want reliable, low-friction backups without dragging a computer into the workflow. The setup hinges on one thing: a stable camera-to-phone connection plus a correctly authorized Google Drive destination.

If uploads fail, don’t treat it like a mystery. Verify Google authorization first, then Wi‑Fi stability, then file type and quota. Once those are solid, “shoot → upload → backed up” becomes routine.
