Sony BRAVIA 8 II FAQ: HDMI 2.1, Gaming Features, and Connectivity

The Sony BRAVIA 8 II supports 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM and eARC, but only HDMI 3 and 4 are listed for 4K/120Hz. Here’s how to plan console and soundbar connections.

Yes—the 2025 Sony BRAVIA 8 II (XR80M2) supports HDMI 2.1 features including 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM and eARC. But not all four HDMI ports support 4K/120Hz: Sony lists HDMI 3 and HDMI 4 for that signal, and an eARC soundbar uses one of those two ports. That port limit is the key detail to plan around if you connect multiple consoles or a PC.

Which HDMI ports support 4K/120Hz?

Sony lists four HDMI inputs on the BRAVIA 8 II, but its port-function table shows 4K 100p/120p support on HDMI 3 and HDMI 4—not all four inputs. Sony describes two inputs as full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports, with eARC supported on one of them. Check the labels on the TV and the support page for your exact regional model before connecting equipment; port assignments can be model- and region-specific.

Sony’s port table lists HDR and its specified lower-frame-rate enhanced 4K modes across all four inputs. For the precise supported formats by port, see Sony’s HDMI terminal function table.

Can I use 4K/120Hz and eARC at the same time?

Yes, but the connections constrain how many high-frame-rate sources you can attach directly. Connect an eARC soundbar to the eARC port, then use the other 4K/120Hz-capable input for a console or PC. If you have more than one 4K/120Hz source, you may need to switch connections or route them through a receiver or HDMI switch. Before buying a receiver or switch, verify that it passes through the video modes, VRR, HDR and audio formats your devices require.

Does the BRAVIA 8 II support VRR and ALLM?

Yes. Sony lists 4K/120Hz, eARC, VRR and ALLM in its HDMI feature support table, and lists SBTM in the model specifications. These are separate capabilities: 4K/120Hz enables supported content to display at a high refresh rate, VRR synchronizes the display refresh rate with a compatible source, and ALLM can automatically select a low-latency mode when supported equipment signals it. Check Sony’s 2025 HDMI 2.1 feature support table for its listed feature matrix.

What should I connect for PS5 gaming?

Use HDMI 3 or HDMI 4 for a PS5 when you want its supported 4K/120Hz output. Sony advertises Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode for PS5, and its product FAQ also lists PS Remote Play and Game Menu 2. TechRadar reports that its tested TV automatically switched to Game picture mode and applied HDR tone mapping when it detected a PS5.

What HDMI cable do I need for 4K/120Hz?

Sony warns that some devices outputting 4K 100p/120p require an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Check the requirements for the console or PC and use a cable certified for the signal you intend to send. If the TV or source offers limited resolution or refresh-rate choices, confirm that the cable is suitable and that the source is connected to HDMI 3 or HDMI 4.
