If a Sons of the Forest dedicated server process is running but the server is absent from the browser, start with its active configuration and startup self-test. Confirm the three default UDP ports—GamePort 8766, QueryPort 27016, and BlobSyncPort 9700—are identical in the server configuration, router or hosting panel, and host firewall. Then test from outside the host’s network: Steam documents that a client and server behind the same router may not see each other through the server browser. A stable LAN address, correctly forwarded ports, readable self-test errors, and an external test usually identify the fault without reinstalling the game.
Why a running server can be missing from the browser
A visible SonsOfTheForestDS.exe process proves only that the dedicated-server program started. It does not prove that Internet traffic can reach the machine, that the query service answered, or that the server registered correctly with the browser.

The dedicated-server configuration guide says the game server runs a network self-test while booting. The test checks whether the server is properly configured; a failed check can prevent normal startup, and the console or log output identifies the failing check. Treat that output as the first diagnostic evidence rather than relying on the process list.

Discovery also has a testing trap. Steam Support states that when a server and client are behind the same router, the client cannot connect through the server browser. Therefore, “not listed” on the same home network is not conclusive proof that the server is offline. Use Steam favorites with the server’s internal address or test from a different Internet connection.

Default ports and addresses to verify
The Steam Community Dedicated Server Configuration Guide (2023) lists these default UDP ports:

All three values are UDP. A rule for only the game port can leave the process running while the query service remains unreachable, which is why the server may be absent from the list. If you changed a port, use the changed value consistently everywhere; do not forward the defaults in addition to a different configured value unless your hosting documentation explicitly requires both.
Steam’s current required-port page (accessed in 2026) also lists remote Steam ports UDP 27015–27050 and TCP 27015–27050. Those ranges describe Steam connectivity requirements and are not a substitute for forwarding the three game-server UDP ports above. Apply the ranges only where your firewall or provider requires Steam’s documented remote access; avoid opening a broad inbound range on a home router when the game server needs only its configured ports.

Fix the server in a reliable order
1. Stop cleanly and edit the active configuration
- Stop the dedicated server normally so it is not rewriting settings while you edit them.
- Open the
dedicatedserver.cfgfile that the current launch process actually uses. The community guide warns that editing a copied example file has no effect; the active configuration is the one that matters. - Record the current bind address and port values before changing anything. This gives you a way back if a configuration-specific experiment fails.
If you have multiple installations or launch profiles, verify the configuration path shown by the startup command or log. A correct file in the wrong installation produces the same symptoms as an incorrect setting.
2. Check the bind address and all three UDP ports
- Confirm that
GamePortis8766,QueryPortis27016, andBlobSyncPortis9700, unless you intentionally chose different values. - Make sure the configured bind address belongs to the host machine and its current network interface. A stale address from an old DHCP lease can make the server listen on an interface that no longer exists.
- Do not put the router’s public address in a field that expects a local interface address. The router receives Internet traffic; the server binds on the computer behind it.
Save the file, restart the server, and watch the first startup messages. Correct the first bind or port error reported; later messages may simply be consequences of that initial failure.

3. Give the host a stable LAN address
Steam’s router guidance recommends a static internal IP for dependable forwarding. Either reserve the computer’s address in the router’s DHCP settings or configure a static address on the host using values appropriate for your network. The important result is that the address does not change after a reboot.
Forward each UDP port to that exact internal address:
- Open the router’s port-forwarding or virtual-server page.
- Create one UDP rule for
8766, one for27016, and one for9700. - Set the destination address of every rule to the dedicated-server computer’s stable LAN IP.
- If the router asks for external and internal ports separately, use the same number on both sides unless you deliberately configured a translated port and understand the effect.
- Save the rules and verify that none is disabled, restricted to the wrong interface, or pointing at an old DHCP address.
On a managed host, perform the equivalent operation in the provider’s network firewall or security-group panel and ensure the panel forwards to the instance running the server. A rule on the wrong virtual machine will not help even when the port number is correct.
4. Allow the executable and UDP traffic through firewalls
On Windows, allow SonsOfTheForestDS.exe through Windows Defender Firewall on the network profiles the host actually uses. If you prefer port rules, allow inbound UDP 8766, 27016, and 9700. Check both the Windows firewall and any third-party security suite; allowing the executable in one does not override a block in another.
For a rented or cloud server, check two layers: the operating-system firewall and the provider’s external firewall or security group. The provider rule must permit UDP on the configured ports, and the operating system must accept the same packets. Review outbound restrictions as well if the self-test reports that the server cannot reach a required Steam service.

After changing a rule, restart the server and inspect its self-test again. A firewall change that does not alter the first reported error is probably addressing the wrong layer or wrong port.

The self-test is more useful than the browser symptom because it names the check that failed. Look for messages referring to an inaccessible port, a bind failure, an address mismatch, or an inability to contact a service.
- A bind error usually means the address is not assigned to the host, another process already owns the port, or the configuration contains an invalid address.
- An inaccessible-port result points to a router forward, provider rule, host firewall, double NAT, or carrier-grade NAT problem.
- A successful local bind followed by a failed external check means the process is listening but traffic is not traversing the network path.
Change one layer at a time and restart after each change. This preserves a clear cause-and-effect trail and prevents a port, address, and firewall change from becoming impossible to untangle.
6. Test from the correct network
Do not use the same browser test to validate both local and Internet access. For a meaningful discovery test, connect a client through a different network, such as a phone hotspot or a friend’s connection, and search again after the server has completed its self-test.
For same-router play, add the server to Steam’s favorites using its internal IP and the configured query port, rather than relying on the public browser list. Steam explicitly documents the same-router browser limitation, so an absent listing in that situation is expected behavior in some network layouts.

If an external client can connect by address but the browser still does not list the server, the game path is working and the remaining issue is discovery or query visibility. Recheck QueryPort, then confirm that the query rule is UDP and points to the same host as the game rule.
7. Isolate the router and NAT
Steam Support recommends rebooting the modem and router, temporarily connecting the host directly to the modem, and reviewing stateful inspection, dynamic packet filtering, quality-of-service (QoS), and UPnP behavior. A wired Ethernet connection is useful for this test because it removes Wi-Fi roaming and wireless isolation from the path.
- Record the existing router settings before changing them.
- Reboot the modem and router, wait for the Internet connection to return, and restart the dedicated server.
- Check whether the router’s WAN address is private. A private WAN address often indicates another router upstream (double NAT) or carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT).
- If practical, connect the host directly to the modem briefly and repeat the external test.
- Temporarily disable a suspected filtering, QoS, or UPnP feature only long enough to test, then restore it if it is not the cause.
Steam’s wording is direct: if you can connect after bypassing the router, the router configuration or compatibility is implicated. A direct-modem result does not mean the server software is broken; it means the normal forwarding path needs correction or the ISP does not provide a reachable public address.
8. Test configuration-specific remedies last
Community reports describe servers disappearing after game or server updates and cases where correcting an address together with its port restored visibility. Some administrators also report success binding to 0.0.0.0, which tells the service to listen on all local interfaces.
These are reported remedies, not universal requirements. Apply them only after checking the documented ports, the active file, and the self-test:

- Copy the original bind value and port settings somewhere safe.
- Change only one address-related value, restart, and read the self-test.
- Test from an external network and through Steam favorites.
- Restore the original value if the bind error changes or another service becomes unreachable.
Binding to 0.0.0.0 can solve a server that must listen on a changing or multiple local interfaces, but it does not bypass a closed router port, CGNAT, or a firewall. Conversely, binding directly to a specific LAN address can be preferable on a multihomed machine when you need to restrict which interface accepts traffic.

Home hosting versus managed hosting
A managed dedicated-server provider can be practical when an ISP uses CGNAT or the home router cannot forward UDP traffic. It changes who controls the network and maintenance, not the need to verify the server’s active configuration.

Choose managed hosting when you cannot obtain a reachable public address or cannot expose UDP ports safely. Choose home hosting when you need unrestricted configuration access and can maintain stable addressing, forwarding, firewall rules, and updates.
A post-update recovery checklist
- Stop the server and identify the configuration file used by the current launch command.
- Compare the active file with your last known-good copy, paying particular attention to bind address and ports.
- Confirm that
8766,27016, and9700are still UDP and still forwarded to the host’s current stable LAN IP. - Check Windows or provider firewall rules for
SonsOfTheForestDS.exeand each configured UDP port. - Read the new startup self-test and correct its first reported failure.
- Test externally, then test same-router clients through Steam favorites with the internal address.
- Only after those checks, trial a corrected address-plus-port combination or
0.0.0.0, keeping a record of the original setting.
Bottom line
The fastest dependable path is configuration first, network second, discovery third: edit the active dedicatedserver.cfg, make the three UDP ports and bind address consistent, forward them to a stable host IP, allow the executable and ports through every firewall, and act on the startup self-test’s first error. Validate from outside the LAN because same-router browser discovery can fail by design. If a direct-modem test works, focus on router, NAT, or ISP compatibility rather than reinstalling the server.
