If your Sonos Arc Ultra has no TV sound, first confirm that setup in the Sonos app is complete and that the soundbar is connected to the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port. Then narrow down whether the problem affects every TV source, just one device, or audio that cuts out intermittently; each pattern points to a different check.
Start by identifying the kind of sound problem
Check whether the Arc Ultra is silent with every TV source, silent only with one streaming device or console, or losing sound after playback begins. This distinction helps separate a TV connection or control issue from a source-specific audio-format problem or an intermittent dropout.

| What you notice | Where to focus |
|---|---|
| No sound from any TV source | Sonos setup, the TV’s ARC/eARC connection, HDMI cable seating, or CEC interference. |
| No sound from only one streaming box, console, or player | That device’s audio output and the TV’s audio-format settings. |
| Sound starts, then cuts out or skips | Rebooting the TV and source, cable condition, audio format, TV software, and whether the TV’s own speakers also drop out. |
| The Sonos app reports HDMI ARC not detected | Connection to the correct TV port and whether the TV is on and actively playing content during the check. |
Check setup and the HDMI ARC connection
- Complete Arc Ultra setup in the Sonos app. The TV should be powered on and playing a show or movie when you check whether the app detects HDMI ARC.
- Confirm the port. The HDMI cable must run from the Arc Ultra to the TV port labeled HDMI ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input does not provide the TV audio-return connection.
- Reseat and inspect the cable. Unplug it at both ends, check for bends or kinks, and push both connectors fully back in. If you have another HDMI cable available, try it to see whether the symptom changes; that test can help isolate a cable fault, but it does not by itself prove the cable was the cause.
Arc Ultra uses HDMI ARC/eARC for TV connection features. Sonos says HDMI ARC is required for CEC or supported voice-assistant control, while Atmos playback requires HDMI ARC or eARC. On a compatible TV without ARC, optical audio may be an alternative with an optical adapter, but optical does not carry CEC or voice control.
If the Sonos app reports a CEC or HDMI error
Sonos identifies other HDMI-connected devices—such as a receiver, cable box, or game console—as possible sources of CEC interference. Isolate the devices before changing audio formats:

- Check the TV settings and make sure HDMI-CEC is enabled. TV makers may use different names for this setting.
- Disconnect the other HDMI devices from the TV, leaving the Arc Ultra connected.
- Play TV audio and check whether the error or sound problem remains.
- Reconnect the other devices one at a time, testing after each connection.
- If reconnecting a particular device brings the problem back, disable CEC on that device if its settings allow it.
Sonos also describes using an HDMI cable or adapter that removes CEC functionality when the device causing the conflict cannot disable CEC. That is a targeted workaround for an isolated CEC conflict, not a general fix for every no-sound problem.
If only one source has no sound, check its audio output
A problem limited to one streaming service or connected player often calls for checking the audio format sent by that source. If Sonos reports an unsupported audio signal, change the TV’s audio format in its Sound or Audio settings. If that does not resolve the issue, adjust the connected video device’s audio output as well. Menu names and available formats vary by TV and device.

- Wonderfully wireless: Place Sub 4 anywhere in the room, even under your sofa. It connects to the soundbar over WiFi, so you can create the setup that works best for your space.
- Perfectly tuned for the room: Using the microphones in your iOS device, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.
- Breeze through setup: Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app. It will guide you through connecting the soundbar to your TV and syncing your TV remote for streamlined control.
If audio cuts out or skips
For intermittent sound rather than continuous silence, Sonos recommends checking the connected system as well as the HDMI link:
- Unplug the TV and the connected source device from power for 10 seconds, then reconnect them and test playback.
- Inspect and reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. If another cable is available, test whether the interruption changes.
- Update the TV software using the TV maker’s settings or support guidance.
- Temporarily set the TV or source audio output to Stereo or PCM and see whether interruptions continue. Treat this as a diagnostic test; stereo may not provide the surround or Atmos playback you want.
- Disconnect Sonos and listen through the TV’s built-in speakers. If they also cut out, the TV may need separate troubleshooting.
When optical audio is an option
If the TV does not have HDMI ARC, Sonos describes optical audio with a compatible adapter as an alternative connection. It can provide audio, but it does not preserve HDMI CEC or supported voice-assistant TV control. It also is not the connection to rely on for Atmos playback, which Sonos says requires HDMI ARC or eARC.
