The Sonnet Echo II DV T5 Desktop connects two PCIe cards to a compatible Mac over Thunderbolt; it does not add slots inside the Mac mini or MacBook Pro. Sonnet names MacBook Pro models with M4 Pro or M4 Max and Mac mini with M4 Pro among its example hosts. The key buying checks are the host’s Thunderbolt connection, each card’s dimensions and power needs, and macOS driver support.
What the Echo II DV T5 Desktop does
The Echo II DV T5 Desktop is an external PCIe expansion enclosure. It gives a compatible computer access to two PCIe 4.0 cards through Thunderbolt, useful when a workflow needs a card that cannot be installed in the computer itself. The cards remain in the enclosure; this is not an internal motherboard upgrade.

Sonnet’s product overview names MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or M4 Max and Mac mini with M4 Pro as example hosts. The technical specifications describe broader host support, subject to the computer’s operating system and Thunderbolt or USB4 connection.
Slots, card fit, and power
According to Sonnet’s technical specifications, the desktop enclosure has two PCIe 4.0 slots. Each is x16 mechanically but x4 electrically: a full-length card can fit, but it connects over four PCIe lanes. The chassis supports two full-length, full-height, single-width cards.

- Auxiliary power: Two 6-pin PCIe power connections are provided, each rated for up to 75 W.
- Chassis: 3.5 × 16.7 × 9 inches (8.9 × 42.4 × 22.9 cm), with a listed weight of 9.7 lb (4.40 kg).
- Power supply and ports: Sonnet lists a universal 400 W power supply and four Thunderbolt ports.
- In the box: Sonnet lists two 0.8-meter Thunderbolt 5 cables, two installed 6-pin PCIe auxiliary power cables, a region-specific power cable, and cable locks.
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. A card’s physical fit does not establish that it will work: check Sonnet’s compatible PCIe card list and the card maker’s operating-system drivers, power requirements, and any other system requirements before buying.
Host compatibility and Thunderbolt connections
Sonnet lists macOS 14 or later for Macs with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt/USB4, or Thunderbolt 3. Its specification note says Intel Macs using Thunderbolt 3 require macOS 15 or later. The same page lists Windows 11 systems with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4, and Linux kernel 6.12 or 6.18 (or newer) with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4. This host-level compatibility does not guarantee that every PCIe card has a compatible driver for every operating system.

- Add Connectivity & Unlock Performance: Expand your computer with a high-performance PCIe card over Thunderbolt 5. Ideal external PCIe expansion for Mac, Windows, and Linux systems.
- Thunderbolt 5 to PCIe Expansion: Delivers up to 6000 MB/s bi-directional PCIe bandwidth for pro audio, video, storage, and networking cards.
- Wide PCIe 4.0 Card Compatibility: Supports half-length+ (7.75"), full-height, single-width PCIe 4.0 x8 cards—plus most cards that require a daughter card.
- Pro-Level Power & Connectivity: Includes auxiliary PCIe power for power-hungry cards. Second Thunderbolt port enables daisy-chaining and provides 15W to connected peripherals.
- Compact, Quiet & Rugged Build: Lightweight aluminum enclosure with temperature-controlled, variable-speed fan for extremely quiet cooling; perfect for desktops, studios, and on-set workflows.
For two bandwidth-hungry cards, Sonnet says to connect the enclosure to two independent Thunderbolt ports on the computer. Its current product overview states 6,800 MB/s of PCIe bandwidth per slot with Thunderbolt 5 hosts and describes a separate Thunderbolt interface for each card slot. That is Sonnet’s published bandwidth figure, not a promise of application throughput; actual performance depends on the host, card, workload, and connection setup. A second physical port is useful only if it provides the independent host connection the setup requires.

The current product overview gives 6,800 MB/s per Thunderbolt 5 connection. Both are vendor claims from their respective publication dates, not independent benchmark results.

Desktop enclosure or Mac mini rack system?
The Echo II DV T5 Desktop is a standalone desktop PCIe expansion unit. If the goal is to mount a Mac mini in a rack as well as add PCIe expansion, Sonnet sells a separate product: the xMac mini (2024+)/Echo II DV T5. Sonnet describes that as a 2U rackmount system designed to house one or two Mac mini (2024+) computers and includes the Echo II DV T5 expansion module. It lists Mac mini (2024+) compatibility. It is not simply another name for the desktop enclosure.

Checks to make before choosing a card
- Confirm the host and OS. Match the Mac or other computer’s Thunderbolt or USB4 capability and operating-system version to Sonnet’s host specifications.
- Check card fit. The desktop unit supports two full-length, full-height, single-width cards. Compare the card’s dimensions and width with those limits.
- Check power and drivers. Confirm the card’s auxiliary power needs against the enclosure’s two 6-pin connections, rated up to 75 W each, and verify driver support for the OS you intend to use.
- Plan the host connections. If both cards need maximum bandwidth, verify that the computer can provide two independent Thunderbolt connections and follow Sonnet’s connection guidance.
- Decide on placement. Choose the desktop unit for standalone external expansion; consider the distinct xMac mini system if rack mounting and housing a Mac mini are part of the requirement.
