Choose Sonic Origins Plus if you want a collection of classic Sonic games; choose Sonic Mania if you want a separate, newly designed classic-style adventure. The key difference is what you’re buying: Origins Plus gathers older games and adds options and extras, while Mania Plus expands the Mania game rather than compiling the original classics.
What is the difference between Sonic Origins and Sonic Mania?
Sonic Origins is a compilation; Sonic Mania is its own 2D action game. Their Plus editions extend those different products rather than making them equivalent: Origins Plus adds games and playable-character options to the collection, while Mania Plus adds content to Mania.

Which game should you choose?
Choose Sonic Origins Plus for the classic catalog
Origins Plus is the clearer choice if you want several foundational Sonic games in one package. It brings together four main games and adds 12 Game Gear titles, with Amy and Knuckles playable in specified games. Those additions make it a broader sampling option than Mania, which is a single separate adventure.

Mania is the better fit if you have already played the classics, or simply want a new game built in a classic style. Mania Plus expands that game; it does not turn it into a retrospective collection. SEGA’s Japan product page describes Mania Plus as a 2D high-speed action game and gives market-specific platform and release details: SEGA Japan’s Sonic Mania Plus page.

Choose based on the kind of challenge you want
Origins gives you two presentations for its main games. Anniversary Mode uses widescreen 16:9 and infinite attempts, while Classic Mode uses the original 4:3 presentation and rules, including limited tries and a time limit. Anniversary Mode also uses coins for certain retries and unlocks. See SEGA’s mode descriptions for the distinctions.
Origins also documents Story, Mission, Boss Rush, Mirror Mode, a Museum, and rankings. These are features of the compilation; they should not be confused with the Plus-only additions. The relevant Plus additions are described on SEGA’s Sonic Origins features page.

What do the Plus editions add?
Origins Plus expands a collection
Origins Plus includes the four main games plus 12 Game Gear titles, and adds Amy as a playable character in the four main games and Knuckles in Sonic CD. It is the option to consider if the extra catalog and character choices matter to you. Nintendo’s US listing calls it “16 Classic Titles, 1 Timeless Collection”; that is Nintendo’s promotional wording, not a comparative rating.
If you already own Sonic Origins, SEGA’s manual confirms an Expansion Pack route for getting Plus additions. Whether the Expansion Pack or a separate Origins Plus purchase is the better value depends on your current region, platform, and prices; those can change, so compare the live listings before buying.

Mania Plus expands Mania
Mania Plus adds content to the Mania game, including Mighty- and Ray-related material. It is not a sequel to Mania and does not include the Origins collection. SEGA’s regional page describes Mania Plus as a physical release of the digital Sonic Mania with added content: SEGA Asia’s Sonic Mania page.

The short recommendation
For a collection of classic Sonic games, pick Sonic Origins Plus. For a separate classic-style adventure, pick Sonic Mania—or Sonic Mania Plus if you want its expanded edition. Neither is a universal upgrade over the other; the right choice depends on whether you want the originals together or a distinct game.
