What the community remote changes
Reporting by XDA Developers and a discussion on Reddit describe a community Android project that reuses KDE Connect’s Android framework, device discovery, and communication while presenting a different remote interface. The redesign is aimed at Linux computers used from a television or media-center setup, including KDE Plasma Bigscreen.

The reported interface includes a directional pad, power controls, clipboard support, and a simplified TV-oriented layout. These are features attributed to the community project, not evidence that the same controls are part of the official KDE Connect app.

KDE Connect already lets an Android phone act as a multimedia remote for Linux media players, as well as a virtual touchpad and keyboard. Its Android project README says devices communicate over an existing Wi-Fi network using TLS encryption.

That means the community project is best understood as a proposed change to the user experience, not a replacement protocol. KDE Connect describes its architecture as a UI-agnostic core consumed by interface components, which makes a redesigned UI conceptually distinct from its underlying communication system. That architectural separation does not establish that this particular project can be adopted unchanged.
Why users want a different remote
The Reddit post framed the project as a response to dissatisfaction with KDE Connect’s remote interface. In the thread, commenters discussed possible improvements such as larger directional controls, gestures, copy-and-paste or select-all shortcuts, dynamic media buttons, tab navigation, and configurable shutdown or sleep actions. They also raised questions about what should happen after a computer sleeps.

These are user requests and observations from a discussion, not verified defects or results from a usability test. A meaningful comparison would need to assess directional navigation from a distance, media and power controls, text entry and clipboard workflow, and behavior during sleep or disconnection. The available material does not provide a controlled usability comparison or a verified compatibility list.
Has KDE accepted or merged it?
There is no confirmation in the sources that the redesign was submitted to KDE, accepted, or merged. The creator said they planned to contact KDE after exams; that is an intention, not evidence of an upstream contribution or release.

KDE’s contribution guidance directs feature requests to project discussion channels and patches to KDE Connect’s GitLab. The Android README also points contributors to GitLab for patches and Bugzilla for bug reports. Even if a patch is submitted, KDE describes contribution as involving review, integration, and ongoing support, so a suggested redesign is not automatically part of an official release.

The reports establish that a community redesign was discussed, but they do not establish a current repository, release or installation path, supported Android versions, or compatibility details. There is therefore not enough verified information here to recommend downloading it or to call it an official KDE app. Readers interested in seeing it become part of KDE Connect can follow the creator’s project discussion and KDE Connect’s contribution channels, while treating any upstream status as unconfirmed until the project announces it.
