Some Google Search Users Saw an Older-Looking Page, but Google Hasn’t Confirmed a Test

Some users reportedly saw an older-looking Google Search interface in November 2025, but Google has not confirmed an A/B test or connected it to its separate plans to simplify Search.

Some Google Search users reportedly saw an older-looking interface in November 2025, but Google did not confirm that it was running an A/B test or rolling back its design. The sightings were described as inconsistent, and their scale, cause and outcome remain unknown. Google separately announced plans to simplify Search by retiring lesser-used features; that announcement does not establish that the reported interface was part of the policy.

What users reportedly saw

On November 13, 2025, PiunikaWeb reported that some users had noticed an older-looking Google Search page over the preceding week. Its account described a classic-style logo, an older search bar and a more simplified results layout. It said sightings varied across desktop and mobile, and Chrome and Safari, and were inconsistent. The report did not establish how many people saw the page or provide a representative measure of its reach. PiunikaWeb’s November 13 report

Was Google testing an old interface?

That is possible, but it is not confirmed. PiunikaWeb characterized an A/B test or temporary holdback as a likely explanation, rather than citing a Google confirmation. Google’s official Search posts from 2025 do not identify the older-looking page or explain the reported sightings. The available information also does not establish which regions were affected, when the sightings began or ended, or what Google ultimately did.

Google says Search results and their presentation can vary with time, context, device, location, language, data-center rollout and personalization. Those are general reasons people may see differences; Google’s guidance does not connect any of them to this particular report. Google’s explanation of why results can differ

What Google meant by simplifying the results page

On November 5, 2025, Google Search Advocate John Mueller described an ongoing review of lesser-used Search features that Google considered to offer little value, with simplification and improved speed among the goals. Mueller said: “For most searches, you likely won’t notice a major difference — most of these features didn’t trigger often and weren’t interacted with much by users.” This announcement concerns feature removals; it does not confirm a test or rollback involving an older interface. A separate change: seven structured-data displays

In a June 12, 2025 post, Google Product Manager Henry Hsu announced the phase-out of seven structured-data types from Google Search: Book Actions, Course Info, Claim Review, Estimated Salary, Learning Video, Special Announcement and Vehicle Listing. The change removes certain Search visual enhancements; it is distinct from both the November feature review and the older-looking interface report. Google’s June 12, 2025 announcement

  • Ranking: Hsu said, “This update won’t affect how pages are ranked.”
  • Use beyond Search: Google said the phase-out would not affect use of the structured data outside Google Search or features that depend on it.

Why the distinction matters

There are two separate pieces of evidence: secondary reporting that some users saw an older-looking page, and official Google announcements about retiring lesser-used Search features and structured-data displays. The first does not establish the cause or confirm an experiment; the latter do not identify the reported interface as part of those changes. Treating them as one confirmed redesign or test goes beyond what Google and the report said.
