If your PS5 isn’t recognizing an external hard drive in 2024, it’s almost always one of four things: power/connection, incompatible format/partitioning, a drive that’s failing, or a console state that needs a system restart or initialization.
This guide walks you through every practical fix, in the order that saves the most time. You’ll get exact menu paths on PS5, plus Windows and macOS checks so you can confirm the file system before you reformat.

What to Know About PS5 External Storage Support
The PS5 supports using an external USB drive for extended storage (installing and storing PS5 games, depending on your setup). In most cases, the console requires the drive to be formatted specifically so the PS5 can mount it reliably.
If the PS5 won’t show the drive under Settings, it can’t “learn” the device—so you need to focus on recognition first (hardware + connection), then format (if needed), then console state (if the OS is misbehaving).

Quick Checks (Fixes That Resolve Most Cases)
- Unplug and reseat: Power off the PS5 fully, unplug the drive, then plug it back in.
- Try a different USB port: Use a rear port if your model has them. Avoid front ports and any USB hub at first.
- Don’t use extension cables: Use the included USB cable if possible; avoid long adapters.
- Restart PS5: A normal restart can clear a stuck USB subsystem.
Before you reformat anything, do the quick checks. If the drive still doesn’t appear, move on to power, formatting, and initialization.
Check USB Port, Cable, and Power (Common Real-World Failures)
External drives are picky about stable power. A “connects sometimes” drive often fails recognition due to insufficient USB power, a faulty cable, or an unstable hub.
Use the right connection path
- Direct connection: Plug the drive directly into the PS5 USB port (no hub).
- Known-good cable: If your drive has a detachable cable, test another USB cable rated for data.
- Powered enclosure: For 3.5-inch HDDs, use the enclosure’s dedicated power supply.
Also note that some enclosures and drives spin up slower under cold starts. If recognition happens only after several minutes, give it time—but don’t wait forever. If you’re never seeing it, proceed.

File system is the #1 software cause. If your drive was formatted for Windows storage or macOS Time Machine, the PS5 may not recognize it as usable extended storage.
How PS5 Formats External Drives for Media Storage
When you initialize for extended storage, the PS5 formats the drive to its required structure (you’ll typically see prompts like Format as Extended Storage). That process usually removes existing partitions, so expect data loss unless the drive is already formatted correctly and you’re not re-initializing.
If your drive shows up but the PS5 refuses to use it, it may be due to missing/incorrect partition layout or a drive type the console won’t mount.
How to Check File System on Windows 11
- Connect the external drive to your PC.
- Press Win + X and select Disk Management.
- Find the correct disk (match size).
- Look at the partition labeled for the drive and check the File system (exFAT, NTFS, FAT32, etc.).
- If it shows multiple partitions, note them—PS5 typically expects a clean layout for extended storage.
If the drive is NTFS or a multi-partition setup, you’ll likely need to let the PS5 format it for extended storage.
How to Check File System on macOS
- Connect the drive to your Mac.
- Open Disk Utility.
- Select the external drive device in the sidebar (not just a volume).
- Go to the Volumes and File System fields to see what’s currently on the drive.
- Check whether it has multiple partitions.
Many macOS setups use APFS or produce partition layouts that the PS5 won’t accept. The PS5 initialization path is usually the end result anyway.
Initialize and Reformat on PS5 (Clean Recognition Path)
If the drive appears but can’t be used, initialization is the fastest reliable route. If the drive doesn’t appear at all, skip to Safe Mode and hardware testing.
Steps to initialize as extended storage
- Connect the external hard drive to the PS5 directly.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Go to Storage.
- Select Extended Storage.
- Choose USB Extended Storage and follow prompts like Format as Extended Storage.
- Confirm and wait for the process to finish. Don’t power off mid-format.
If the PS5 offers Format, take it. If it doesn’t recognize the drive in Storage, you’re dealing with recognition (power/connection/drive health) rather than formatting alone.
Use Safe Mode When the Console UI Won’t Detect the Drive
Sometimes the PS5 boots with a stuck database or peripheral enumeration issue. Safe Mode gives you options that don’t require complicated repairs.

Recommended Safe Mode steps
- Completely power off the PS5 (not Rest Mode).
- Hold the power button until you hear two beeps: one when you press and one after about 7 seconds.
- Connect a controller with a USB cable to the PS5.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Choose Rebuild Database and let it complete.
After reboot, check Settings > Storage again. Rebuild Database won’t change the drive format, but it can restore detection when the OS storage manager is confused.
Test the Drive on Another Device (Eliminate Hardware Faults)
If formatting on PS5 never works and the drive never appears, the enclosure or the hard drive itself may be failing. Hardware issues look like “format problems,” so verify first.
What to test
- Test the same drive/enclosure on a different PC (Windows 11) using Disk Management.
- Test on a different external USB port or another power source if it’s a powered enclosure.
- If the drive shows I/O errors or won’t mount on Windows, replace it—don’t keep reformatting.
Also try a different USB cable if your enclosure supports it. A cable can prevent enumeration entirely.
When It Still Fails: Targeted Troubleshooting by Symptoms
Use this table to narrow down what’s most likely wrong based on what you see on the PS5.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Symptom on PS5 | Most Likely Cause | What to Try First |
|---|---|---|
| No drive listed anywhere in Settings > Storage | Power/USB/cable/hub issue or faulty enclosure | Use a rear USB port, direct connection, different cable, powered enclosure power supply check |
| Drive appears but says it can’t be used | Wrong file system or partition layout | Use Format as Extended Storage on PS5 |
| Format starts then fails | Bad sectors, failing drive, unstable power | Test drive on Windows Disk Management; replace cable/enclosure; avoid USB hub |
| Drive disconnects during use | Power dips or loose connection | Use a powered enclosure, ensure cable seating, try another USB port |
| PS5 recognizes sometimes but not consistently | Intermittent USB controller/cable/enclosure | Update PS5 system software, test with another drive |
If you hit a failure loop, don’t keep repeating formatting. Switch to testing on another device and/or replacing the enclosure.
Do You Need to Back Up? Data Loss Risks and Options
Whenever you format or initialize an external drive on PS5, expect data deletion. PS5 extended storage formatting typically wipes existing partitions.
Before you format
- Try to copy important files to a PC first.
- If the drive can mount on Windows, recover data using file copy before touching PS5 formatting.
- If the drive won’t mount on any device, you may be dealing with hardware failure.
If the only issue is file system mismatch, data may still be recoverable from a PC. If it’s failing, recovery becomes time-sensitive.
Supported Drive Expectations (Capacity, Type, and Performance)
In practical terms, PS5 extended storage works with most external USB HDDs and some SSDs, but success depends on how the drive is powered and how it’s formatted.
Stick to drives/enclosures that provide stable USB 3.x connectivity, and avoid extremely cheap “no-name” enclosures that cut power under load.
What to look for
- Reliable enclosure (especially for 3.5-inch HDDs)
- USB 3.0 or faster (for performance and stability)
- Single-partition style after PS5 formatting
- Capacity within typical PS5 extended storage ranges (model- and firmware-dependent, but your PS5 will confirm what it accepts during formatting)
If the PS5 rejects the drive during formatting, the console usually tells you why. Use that message to guide your next step rather than repeating the same setup.

- Using a USB hub (even a powered hub). Start direct.
- Forgetting Rest Mode: Rest Mode can behave differently with USB devices. Power fully off when troubleshooting.
- Assuming exFAT works automatically: Many drives are exFAT but still won’t match PS5’s expected extended storage format/layout.
- Reformatting on PC repeatedly without testing recognition on PS5 between attempts.
- Ignoring drive health: If Windows shows errors or the drive slows to a crawl, stop treating it like a software problem.
Follow the workflow: recognition check → PS5 format/initialize → safe mode database rebuild → hardware test.

PS5 Not Recognizing External Hard Drive FAQs
Does the PS5 need exFAT for an external drive?
Not reliably as a universal rule. Many drives start out as exFAT, but the PS5 typically requires its own extended storage formatting. If you see a format prompt on PS5, follow it rather than trying to “guess” the correct file system.
Will my PS5 external hard drive work if it’s formatted for macOS?
Usually not for extended storage. macOS formats like APFS commonly won’t be accepted by the PS5 for extended storage, so you’ll need to format/initialize using the PS5 when possible.
What if the drive shows up in Windows but not on PS5?
Focus on power and connection first: try another PS5 USB port, avoid hubs, and test a different cable/enclosure. If the connection is solid, the next step is safe mode rebuild database, then PS5 initialization.
Why does the PS5 disconnect the external drive during formatting?
Power instability or failing sectors are common. Test the drive on a PC for I/O errors. If the enclosure is powered externally (3.5-inch), verify the power supply and try a different enclosure.
Can I keep my data when initializing the drive on PS5?
Typically no. Initialization/formatting for extended storage usually deletes existing partitions. If the drive mounts on a PC, back up before you reformat on PS5.
Bottom Line
Most PS5 not recognizing external hard drive issues in 2024 come down to USB power/connection quality and whether the drive is properly formatted for PS5 extended storage. Start with direct connection and a different USB port, then use the PS5’s Format as Extended Storage flow.
