If that finalization step can’t complete—because files are corrupt, the download cache is locked, or verification requests are blocked—you’ll see a stuck screen, repeated progress resets, or an endless retry loop.
Quick triage (do these first)
These steps resolve a surprising number of update stalls without heavy troubleshooting.
- Fully restart your device (not just a quick sleep/standby). Reboot clears stuck background services.
- Check for active downloads/uploads in Steam, Battle.net, Windows Update, console system updates, or cloud sync clients. Pause them for 10 minutes.
- Verify you have enough free disk space for patch staging. As a practical rule, keep at least 10–20 GB free on the drive that holds Overwatch 2.
- Switch networks once if possible (use a phone hotspot briefly). If the issue disappears, the original network path is likely interfering.
If it’s still stuck after restarting, go to the repair steps for your platform.

Fix on Windows (Battle.net)
On Windows, the most reliable approach is to stop the game, clear Blizzard’s update cache, then use Battle.net’s verification/repair tools.
Step 1: Stop the game and Battle.net background tasks
- Close Overwatch 2.
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
- End tasks for Overwatch 2, Battle.net, and any Blizzard Update-related processes if they appear.
Step 2: Clear Battle.net update cache
This forces Battle.net to re-stage patch files instead of reusing a corrupted cache.
- Press Win + R, type
%ProgramData%, and press Enter. - Open the Battle.net folder.
- Find the folder named Agent and the Data subfolders (exact layout can vary by launcher version).
- Delete the patch staging files related to updates if present, then restart the PC and launch Battle.net again.
If you don’t see the expected folders or aren’t comfortable deleting files in ProgramData, skip to Step 3 and use Scan and Repair first.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step 4: If repair fails, reinstall cleanly (targeted reinstall)
- Uninstall Overwatch 2 from Battle.net.
- Restart your PC.
- Reinstall Overwatch 2, but confirm you’re installing to a drive with enough free space (SSD recommended).
- After download, keep the PC awake until the patch completes.
Fix on macOS (Battle.net)
macOS issues usually come down to verification failing mid-stage, background network interruptions, or corrupted cached patch data.
Step 1: Quit everything related to Battle.net
- Close Overwatch 2.
- From the Apple menu, choose Force Quit and terminate Battle.net and any related Blizzard services.
Step 2: Clear local caches (safe approach)
Exact cache paths can differ across macOS versions, but the general pattern is: clear Battle.net cache, then verify game files.
- Open Finder → Go → Go to Folder….
- Try these locations and clear Battle.net cache folders if present:
~/Library/Application Support/Blizzard/~/Library/Caches/Blizzard//Library/Application Support/Blizzard/(if you have system access)
- Restart your Mac and open Battle.net again.
Step 3: Re-verify / repair from Battle.net
- In Battle.net, go to Overwatch 2.
- Open ⚙ → Scan and Repair.
- Run the scan and let it finish.
Fix on PlayStation 5 / PlayStation 4
On PlayStation, update stalls typically clear via restart, cache rebuild, or managing storage so the update can stage correctly.
Step 1: Restart and resume the update
- From the PS home screen, fully close the game if it’s open.
- Restart the console.
- Return to the game and check if the update resumes to completion.
Step 2: Check storage space
- Go to Settings → Storage.
- Free space so you’re not below a few tens of GB. Updates need headroom for staging.
Step 3: Rebuild database (safe option)
- Turn off the console completely.
- Boot into Safe Mode by holding the power button until you hear the second beep.
- Select 5. Rebuild Database.
- After reboot, try the update again.
Fix on Xbox Series X|S / Xbox One
On Xbox, the most common causes are stuck downloads, a full/near-full drive, or corrupted local content requiring a clear-and-reinstall.
Step 1: Power cycle (not just restart)
- Press and hold the Xbox button.
- Select Turn off console.
- Unplug the power cable for 30 seconds.
- Plug back in, turn it on, and try the update again.
Step 2: Clear local save of the game content cache (where applicable)
Xbox doesn’t provide a direct “patch cache delete” button for every scenario, so the practical solution is often: remove and reinstall the game content, or clear the queue by retrying after a power cycle.

Fix on Steam Deck / Linux (if you run Overwatch 2 there)
If you run Overwatch 2 through a Proton/compatibility setup (availability depends on Blizzard support for your environment), update stalls often come from shader caches or filesystem permission issues.
Step 1: Verify installation files (Steam)
If you installed via Steam, use Steam’s file verification.
- Open Steam.
- Go to Library → Overwatch 2.
- Right-click → Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Step 2: Clear shader cache (common stall reducer)
On Steam Deck, shader cache issues can block the finalization stage. Clearing it forces regeneration.
- Open Steam Deck System settings.
- Find Developer options if available.
- Clear shader cache for the game (wording varies by SteamOS version).
- Reboot and retry the update.
Common root causes and targeted solutions
If you want fewer loops and more certainty, match the symptoms to the fix.
Corrupt download or patch cache
Symptom: update screen sits at the same percentage for 10–30 minutes, then resets or never completes. Fix: run Scan and Repair (Windows/macOS) or reinstall (console).
Insufficient disk space
Symptom: update starts, then hangs while applying. Many patches need extra temporary space during unpacking. Fix: free at least 10–20 GB and retry.

Background downloads and bandwidth shaping
Symptom: update stalls at “applying” while other network traffic is active. Fix: pause other downloads, then restart the device and retry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirewall or security software blocking Battle.net
Symptom: update verification repeatedly fails or pauses. Fix: temporarily allow Battle.net through Windows Security Firewall (and your antivirus). If the update succeeds, keep the allow-list instead of disabling security permanently.
Date/time mismatch
Symptom: verification fails instantly, or authentication/login retries happen. Fix: set correct system date/time and time zone, or enable automatic time sync.
Account or region mismatch after an update
Symptom: you can download but can’t finalize, or you see repeated “update pending” behavior. Fix: fully sign out and back in on the launcher/console, then retry the update.

When updates keep re-looping (looping apply/update)
Looping usually means the patch is repeatedly failing verification or staging. Use a “reset the pipeline” strategy.
- Power cycle the device (full off, wait 30 seconds, then boot).
- Switch networks once (home Wi‑Fi ↔ phone hotspot).
- On Windows/macOS: clear the patch cache (or proceed straight to uninstall/reinstall if you’re on a deadline).
- On consoles: uninstall the game and reinstall, then avoid sleep/standby during the applying phase.
Workarounds while you wait
If you’re stuck but need to use your device quickly, you can sometimes reduce the impact while the patch finishes.
- Don’t put the system to sleep during applying. Screens that finalize patches are sensitive to interruptions.
- Use a wired connection on PC/console when available.
- Limit background tasks (pause cloud sync and large downloads).
FAQs
How long should Overwatch 2 be on Applying Update?
For typical patch sizes, Applying Update often resolves within 10–30 minutes on SSD systems. If it’s been over 60 minutes with no progress, treat it as a failed staging/verification and use Scan and Repair or reinstall.

Most settings are tied to your account and should remain. However, local performance settings and offline tweaks may be reset. Saves/profiles are generally server-backed.
Does using a VPN help?
Sometimes it helps if your ISP or network path is causing packet loss during patch delivery. But it can also make things worse. If you suspect network interference, test by switching networks (hotspot) rather than relying on a VPN.
Why does the update work on one device but not another?
Because the patch pipeline depends on local caching, storage availability, and network behavior. One device might have a clean patch cache and enough free space, while another has corrupt staging files or a blocked verification request.
Bottom Line
When Overwatch 2 is stuck on the Applying Update screen, assume the finalization step is failing—usually due to corrupted patch cache, insufficient disk space, or a network/security block. Start with a full power cycle and storage check, then run Scan and Repair (Windows/macOS) or reinstall cleanly (console).
