Elden Ring multiplayer usually fails because one of the players is offline, out of date, in an ineligible area, using the wrong summon item, or entering a mismatched password. Work through the checks below in order; they separate a missing summon sign from a connection that fails after the sign appears.
First, identify which multiplayer failure you have
There are two different problems that players often describe as “multiplayer not working.” If you cannot see a golden sign at all, check online login, game versions, area and boss eligibility, summon items, passwords and the summoning-pool setup. If the sign is visible but the summon ends with “Unable to summon cooperator” or another connection error, the basic eligibility rules are probably satisfied and the failure is occurring while the two game clients establish their session.

1. Put both copies of the game online and up to date
Select online play before loading the character
Both players must launch Elden Ring in online mode and be signed in to the service for their platform. If either copy was started in offline mode, the other player’s sign will not become available. Return to the title screen, verify the online setting, and sign in before entering the world. Also confirm that the host and guest have chosen one clear role: the host will summon, while the guest will place the sign.

Read the App Ver. and Regulation Ver. values on the title screen on both systems. Install the current game update rather than relying on an older installation. Bandai Namco’s update notes state: “Online play requires the player to apply this update.” The September 8, 2026 notice lists App Ver. 1.17.1 and Regulation Ver. 1.17.1, but those numbers can change; use the versions actually displayed by your title screen.

On console versions, log in from the title screen so the current regulation file can download. Have both players complete this check, then close and reopen the game if an update was installed. A mismatch can prevent online play even when both characters are otherwise ready to meet.
2. Meet the same-area requirement
Move both characters to approximately the same part of the map. The official multiplayer guidance gives the example of meeting near the same Site of Grace. Being somewhere in the same broad region is not always enough if one player is at a distant dungeon entrance, underground section or separate activity area.
- Choose the host’s meeting point, preferably beside a named Site of Grace or a clearly identifiable doorway.
- Have both players travel there before placing or searching for a sign.
- Do not change areas while the sign is being placed or searched; wait for the summon attempt to finish.
The host can have up to two cooperative guests at once. If the host already has two guests, another friend’s sign will not produce a third cooperative slot. Remove an existing guest or wait for the current session to end before trying again.

For a direct friend-to-friend summon
The guest opens the multiplayer inventory and uses Tarnished’s Furled Finger. This places a golden summon sign in the guest’s current location. The host then uses a Furcalling Finger Remedy near that location to reveal available signs. The host selects the friend’s sign and accepts the summon.

If the guest used the wrong finger, placed the sign in a different area, or moved after placing it, the host may see nothing. Remove the old sign, return to the agreed meeting point and place a new one after the host has activated the remedy.
For a summoning pool
Summoning pools use a different flow. A player who wants to offer help uses a Small Golden Effigy to send a cooperative sign to an activated pool. The host travels to the relevant Martyr Effigy, activates it if necessary, and uses a Furcalling Finger Remedy near the pool to reveal available signs. Both players should use the pool closest to the area where they intend to play.
Do not mix the two procedures accidentally. A Small Golden Effigy sends a sign through the pool network, while Tarnished’s Furled Finger places a sign at the guest’s immediate location. The host’s remedy is still the item that reveals signs in either meeting method.

4. Make passwords match exactly
A multiplayer password filters the signs and invitations that each player can see. Enter the same password on both systems, including every capital letter, lower-case letter and number. Passwords are case sensitive, so “Ranni7” and “ranni7” are different.
- Temporarily clear unrelated multiplayer and group passwords on both systems.
- Choose one short test password and enter it identically on the host and guest screens.
- Return to the same area, replace the guest’s sign and use a new Furcalling Finger Remedy on the host.
A group password can prioritize matching players, but it does not guarantee that a matching player will be available. It is therefore not a substitute for an exact multiplayer password when two friends are trying to meet at a specific location. If the sign is still missing, clear all passwords once and test without a password; that distinguishes a password-entry problem from an area or service problem.
5. Check the area boss and session rules
Cooperative eligibility is tied to the relevant boss or mini-boss in the area. If the host has already defeated that enemy, the game may no longer allow the relevant cooperative session there. Check the host’s progress, not only the guest’s: a guest can be ready to help while the host’s completed boss state prevents a sign from being used.
Once co-op has started, it ends when a player dies, a guest is removed, an internet interruption occurs, or the relevant boss or mini-boss is defeated. If a session disappears immediately after a victory, that is expected behavior rather than proof that the summon system is broken. To continue playing together, the host must move to another eligible area and repeat the summon process.
6. Recover from “Unable to summon cooperator”
When a sign appears but the summon fails, another player may have taken the sign first, or one of the two clients may have lost its online session during the hand-off. Use this clean retry sequence:

- Cancel the failed attempt and wait a few seconds for the sign to disappear.
- Have the guest fully quit Elden Ring, not merely return to the title screen, then relaunch in online mode.
- Restart the host’s console or PC as well, and sign back in to the platform service.
- Confirm the current App and Regulation versions again after relaunching.
- Return both characters to the same local meeting point, re-enter the exact password, place a fresh Tarnished’s Furled Finger sign and use a new Furcalling Finger Remedy.
- If the sign belongs to a summoning pool, activate the nearby Martyr Effigy and repeat the Small Golden Effigy or pool-remedy steps instead of placing a direct sign.
Check the platform service status while testing. The publisher guidance does not identify one universal NAT, port-forwarding or firewall setting that fixes every failed summon, so avoid treating a random port change as a guaranteed solution. The practical recovery steps above are safer first tests and give you a clean result to report if support is needed.
7. Compare platforms and avoid unsupported assumptions
The official guide lists Elden Ring on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC through Steam. It does not establish cross-platform multiplayer between those families. Before troubleshooting deeper, verify that both players are using compatible versions on a supported platform and that each is signed in to that platform’s online service. Do not promise that a PlayStation player can join an Xbox or PC host simply because both installations have the same patch number.
8. When every check passes but multiplayer still fails
Test with one friend at a time and record what happens at each stage. A sign visible to one friend but not another points toward password, area or boss-state differences. A sign visible to everyone but failing during summoning points toward the online session or platform service. If no one can summon anyone, compare the title-screen versions and service status before changing in-game settings.

For publisher or platform support, provide the platform model, the exact error text, App Ver. and Regulation Ver., the meeting area and Site of Grace, whether signs are visible, whether a password is set, and whether the failure occurs before or after the sign is selected. Include whether the area boss or mini-boss has already been defeated. This information lets support distinguish an eligibility problem from a connection failure without making you repeat the same basic tests.
