Solid-state batteries are a serious EV development effort, but the evidence available in 2026 does not show a mass-market revolution. Toyota’s 2027–2028 commercialization target and pilot-line work by QuantumScape and Solid Power mark real progress. They do not establish that production is scalable, vehicle programs are fully qualified, or that consumers can buy a solid-state EV today. “Promising, with commercialization still unproven at scale” is the most defensible verdict.
What does “ready for EVs” mean?
A battery prototype, a vehicle test, a pilot line and a mass-produced retail vehicle are different milestones. Company announcements in 2026 document activity at the development and pilot-manufacturing stages, but do not establish broad consumer availability.

It also helps to separate two questions: whether a company has made tangible progress, and whether it has demonstrated repeatable, cost-effective production at automotive scale. The first can be true before the second is.

|---|---|---|
| Cell or material development | Work on a chemistry, cell design or component. | Vehicle qualification or production readiness. |
| Test vehicle | A technology has been installed in a vehicle for evaluation. | A retail model, production volume or completed validation. |
| Pilot line | Equipment and processes are being developed toward manufacturing. | Mass-production yield, cost, output or reliability. |
| Commercial launch | A product is being brought to market. | By itself, broad availability or high-volume production. |
For any announced performance advantage, the useful questions are: Is the figure a measured result or a target? Does it describe a cell or a vehicle pack? What comparison baseline, test conditions and charge window apply? The company statements discussed below do not supply independent, cross-industry validation of real-world range, charging, cost or market share.
#1 Best Overall
- SEMI-SOLID-STATE SAFETY, BUILT FOR TRAVEL: Semi-solid-state cells hold a fraction of the flammable liquid in ordinary lithium-ion and resist thermal failure. In internal testing, the cells were puncture, cut and drill tested with no fire. The aluminum housing is highly thermally conductive, helping draw heat away from the cells and dissipate it during charging. Under 100Wh, it's airline carry-on ready.
- ALL-DAY POWER, STILL POCKETABLE: A full 10,000mAh gives a typical iPhone roughly 1.5 to 2 charges - plenty for long travel days, events and back-to-back workdays without chasing an outlet. The dense semi-solid state design (a paired 5,000mAh + 5,000mAh layout) keeps the pack slim enough to slip into a jacket pocket or bag. The built-in lanyard doubles as a USB-C cable, so a charging cord is always attached - nothing extra to pack or lose.
- QI2-CERTIFIED 15W MAGNETIC CHARGING: A strong, precisely aligned magnet snaps onto iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 and 12 with precise alignment and a strong hold, so you can keep using your phone while it charges. As a Qi2-certified, MagSafe-compatible charger, the magnetic connection keeps the charger aligned while you scroll, text, or move.
- DUAL USB-C, UP TO 30W OUTPUT: Two USB-C ports let you charge several devices at once and deliver up to 30W of fast wired power for phones, earbuds and tablets. The same port also refills the 10K itself quickly, so it's ready for the next day. (Large tablets and laptops draw more and may only charge partially.)
- FULL-COLOR LCD DISPLAY: A crisp color screen shows exact battery percentage plus live input and output wattage, so you always know how much power is left and how fast each device is charging - no blinking LEDs to decode. It stays easy to read at a glance, whether you're commuting, at an event, on a shoot or working late.
What are companies actually doing in 2026?
Toyota: a 2027–2028 target, with durability and manufacturing work ongoing
Toyota’s 2023 battery roadmap distinguishes all-solid-state batteries from its next-generation lithium-ion batteries. That distinction matters: the roadmap’s range and charging claims for other battery tracks should not be attributed to solid-state cells.
For its all-solid-state program, Toyota set a company target of commercialization in 2027–2028 and said it was developing mass-production methods. The same roadmap stated a goal of charging from 10% to 80% in 10 minutes or less and a 20% range improvement relative to Toyota’s specified next-generation performance battery. These are company aims, not independently confirmed results from a production EV; the range figure is not the separate 1,000 km goal Toyota described for a next-generation BEV/performance battery.
Toyota’s program with Idemitsu focuses on sulfide solid electrolytes. In a 2023 collaboration announcement, the companies described development and pilot-facility work before studying future full-scale production. Toyota identified a specific technical problem: cracking at material interfaces during repeated charging and discharging can degrade performance. Its official document put it plainly: “The biggest challenge is durability.” Toyota and Sumitomo Metal Mining announced joint development of cathode materials in 2025, while also describing continued work on material performance, quality, safety and cost.

QuantumScape: Eagle Line is a pilot-production milestone
QuantumScape announced the inauguration of its Eagle Line on February 4, 2026, describing it as a solid-state battery pilot-production line. In a 2026 SEC-filed shareholder letter, the company said its objective for the year was to demonstrate scalable production on the line, including an initial ramp and continuing improvements in productivity, quality and reliability.
That is meaningful industrialization work, but the stated objective itself shows what remained to be demonstrated. The announcement does not establish mass production, completed automotive qualification or broad vehicle availability. QuantumScape describes its technology as solid-state lithium-metal; it should not be assumed to use Toyota’s sulfide-electrolyte approach.
Solid Power, BMW and Samsung SDI: evaluation and a planned pilot-line startup
Solid Power’s 2025 Form 10-K describes development and evaluation work with Samsung SDI and BMW, alongside work toward a demonstration vehicle. It reports that a BMW i7 test vehicle featuring Solid Power cells and solid-state battery technology was introduced in May 2025. That is a vehicle-test milestone, not evidence of a retail BMW or mass-market production.

In its August 4, 2026 second-quarter update, Solid Power said installation of major equipment for its continuous-manufacturing pilot line was advancing. It targeted equipment acceptance testing for the third quarter, with plant validation and operational startup planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. Those were the company’s plans as of that update, not confirmation that the milestones were completed.

Targets describe what a company aims to achieve; they are not proof that a vehicle has achieved it in ordinary use. Toyota’s 10-minute charging goal applies to the 10–80% charge window it specified. Its 20% range-improvement goal is relative to its stated next-generation performance-battery baseline. Neither figure should be silently converted into a general promise about every solid-state battery or an available EV.
Comparisons are only useful when they match the battery or vehicle level, test cycle, temperature, charge window and baseline. A claimed advantage on one measure does not settle durability, safety, manufacturing cost or real-world performance. The announcements covered here do not provide an independent, like-for-like industry comparison on those questions.

Does the evidence point to a revolution or a deception?
“Revolution” overstates the near-term evidence if it treats a launch target, prototype or pilot line as proof of mass-market availability. A pilot line is intended to develop and demonstrate manufacturing processes; opening or installing one does not show that the company can produce large quantities with repeatable quality and acceptable cost.
“Deception” goes too far in the other direction. The cited disclosures describe tangible development: Toyota’s materials and manufacturing work, QuantumScape’s pilot-line objective, and Solid Power’s partner evaluations, test vehicle and planned pilot-line milestones. The more accurate conclusion is that these are genuine programs whose commercial claims still need to be judged against completed milestones and independently established performance.

What evidence would show that commercialization is real?
As companies move from development toward sales, distinguish announced intent from achieved results. Useful evidence includes:
- Manufacturing: disclosed output, repeatable quality, yield and reliability from an operating line—not only equipment installation or a facility opening.
- Qualification: completed validation for the intended automotive application, rather than a sample, partnership or demonstration vehicle alone.
- Durability: disclosed cycling and operating conditions, including how performance changes with repeated charging and discharging.
- Vehicle-level performance: clearly identified test conditions and a fair baseline for range and charging claims.
- Commercial availability: a named production vehicle and a confirmed sales launch, rather than a company target or future plan.
The record described here is strongest on named-company plans and development milestones. It does not establish a universal ranking of solid-state chemistries or that solid-state batteries are inherently safe. Safety conclusions require specific disclosed test evidence, not a generalization from the battery label.
