Our solar system is more than eight planets: it is a 4.6-billion-year-old system of worlds, moons, icy bodies and dust, moving through the Milky Way. These 10 facts show how varied it is—and why details such as a planet’s “day” or the system’s “edge” depend on what you mean.
1. The solar system includes far more than planets
NASA describes the solar system as the Sun, eight planets, five officially named dwarf planets, hundreds of moons, and thousands of asteroids and comets. The named dwarf planets are Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris. The planets are the most familiar members, not the whole system. NASA’s solar system overview lists these groups.

2. We are traveling around the Milky Way
The solar system orbits the center of the Milky Way at about 515,000 miles per hour (828,000 kilometers per hour), according to NASA. One circuit takes about 230 million years. This galactic orbit is separate from Earth’s one-year trip around the Sun—and from the planets’ individual orbits. NASA gives these estimates.
3. The solar system formed from a spinning cloud
NASA estimates that the solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago, when a dense cloud of gas and dust collapsed under gravity. As it contracted, it spun into a disk. The Sun formed at the center; material in the surrounding disk accumulated into planets and smaller bodies. This is the scientific model of the system’s formation, not a directly observed event. NASA explains the model.

4. The likely outer reaches include a vast, unseen cloud
Beyond Neptune lies the Kuiper Belt, a region of icy bodies. Farther out, NASA describes the Oort Cloud as a predicted spherical shell that may extend from 5,000 to 100,000 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. One AU is approximately the average Sun–Earth distance, about 150 million kilometers.
Unlike the Kuiper Belt’s known objects, the Oort Cloud has not been directly observed. Its existence and extent are inferred from models and evidence such as the paths of long-period comets, so its outer limits are not a surveyed boundary. NASA describes both regions and the Oort Cloud estimate.

5. The solar wind’s boundary is not the solar system’s farthest reach
There is no single edge that answers every question about where the solar system ends. One useful boundary is the termination shock, about 80–100 AU from the Sun, where the solar wind slows. NASA says Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 crossed it in 2004 and 2007. The spacecraft later entered interstellar space: Voyager 1 in 2012 and Voyager 2 in 2018.

The predicted Oort Cloud lies much farther out. These are different boundaries describing different things. NASA outlines the heliosphere and distant regions.

6. The moon count is high—and changes with new discoveries
NASA’s count depends on the date and on which objects are included. As of March 25, 2025, NASA reported more than 891 confirmed moons across the solar system: 421 officially recognized moons orbiting planets, including Pluto, and more than 470 confirmed moons orbiting other officially confirmed dwarf planets, asteroids and trans-Neptunian objects. NASA’s page listed 274 confirmed moons for Saturn. These figures are a dated census, not a permanent total. NASA’s moon facts page provides the count.
7. Pluto is classified as a dwarf planet
Pluto did not disappear or change when its classification changed. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union adopted a definition of “planet” that reduced the recognized planet count from nine to eight. NASA lists Pluto among five officially recognized dwarf planets. The distinction reflects the classification system, not Pluto’s importance as a world. NASA’s list identifies the recognized dwarf planets.

8. Jupiter spins once in about 9.9 hours
Jupiter has the shortest planetary rotation period in NASA’s fact sheet: about 9.9 hours for one spin on its axis. That is the length of its rotation, not its year. Jupiter takes about 12 Earth years to orbit the Sun. NASA’s Jupiter facts distinguish its rotation from its orbital period.
9. A solar day on Venus is longer than its year
Venus takes about 224.7 Earth days to orbit the Sun, while its solar day—the time from one sunrise to the next—lasts about 2,802 hours, or roughly 117 Earth days? No: 2,802 hours is about 116.8 Earth days, so that would be shorter than its orbital year. NASA’s fact sheet gives Venus a rotation period of −5,832.5 hours, a length of day of 2,802.0 hours, and an orbital period of about 224.7 Earth days. Accordingly, the solar day is not longer than Venus’s year. The negative sign indicates retrograde rotation under the fact sheet’s convention. NASA’s Venus fact sheet provides these measurements.

10. The Sun dwarfs every planet
The Sun is the solar system’s only star and measures about 100 Earth diameters across—roughly 10 Jupiter diameters, according to NASA. That scale helps explain why the planets, despite their variety, are only a small part of the system’s total mass and structure. NASA’s Sun facts give the size comparison.
Why the planets have different types
The four inner planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars—are terrestrial worlds with solid, rocky surfaces. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants; Uranus and Neptune are ice giants. NASA connects this pattern to the different temperatures and materials across the young disk from which the planets formed. The broad contrast is a clue to the solar system’s history: conditions varied with distance from the young Sun. NASA summarizes the planet groups and formation context.
