Solar Panels vs. Thin-Film Panels: Cost, Efficiency, and Best Uses

Crystalline silicon is the usual choice for space-limited home roofs; thin-film includes distinct technologies such as utility-scale CdTe and flexible CIGS. Compare total system cost and output rather than assuming thin-film is cheaper.

For a typical home roof, crystalline-silicon panels are the practical default: they generally deliver more power from limited space, and they are the technology used in the U.S. Department of Energy’s representative 2025 residential system. Thin-film is not one competing panel type; it includes technologies such as cadmium telluride (CdTe) and copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), each suited to different project needs. CdTe is established in utility-scale solar, while flexible CIGS has a specialized role in vehicle-integrated applications. Thin-film is not automatically cheaper: compare complete system costs and expected output using the same location, date, and assumptions.

What “thin-film” means—and what it does not

In consumer discussions, “solar panels” usually means modules built with crystalline silicon. Thin-film describes a different construction: a thin layer of light-absorbing semiconductor is deposited on a supporting material such as glass, plastic, or metal. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies CdTe and CIGS as established thin-film semiconductor types; perovskite and organic photovoltaics are other thin-film approaches, but they are not interchangeable products.

The comparison is therefore not one panel against one panel. It is crystalline silicon versus a set of technologies with different efficiency, durability, manufacturing, and form-factor characteristics.

How efficiency compares

Efficiency indicates how much sunlight a module converts to electricity under specified test conditions. A more efficient module can provide more rated power from a given area, making efficiency especially relevant on a roof with limited usable space. It is only one part of system value: project scale, design, operating conditions, and cost also matter.

Measure CdTe Crystalline silicon How to interpret it
Record module efficiency reported in January 2025 19.9% 24.9% Record module figures reported by the U.S. Department of Energy; these are not typical ratings for every product. Source: DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office, January 2025.
Record cell efficiency reported in January 2025 23.1% on a 0.45 cm² cell area 27.3% on a 243 cm² cell area Cell records use different measured areas and should not be compared as if they were ordinary module ratings. Source: DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office, January 2025.

These records establish that silicon led in the cited module and cell figures; they do not predict the output of a specific installation. A buyer should compare the rated power, module dimensions, and expected system production of actual products under the same site assumptions.

Are thin-film panels cheaper?

Not necessarily. The DOE says thin-film can have manufacturing advantages, and CdTe can be made using low-cost manufacturing processes. But manufacturing cost is not the same as a price offered to a buyer. The DOE’s CdTe perspective also describes price pressure from falling silicon supply-chain costs, while policy, manufacturing scale, market conditions, and system design affect prices too.

DOE’s cost benchmark distinguishes a modeled market price, which may reflect temporary market distortions, from a minimum sustainable price: a modeled long-run price under the benchmark’s assumptions. It assesses utility, commercial, and residential systems with different representative designs. Its representative 2025 residential design uses silicon, so the benchmark helps explain how system costs are modeled but is not a current, direct consumer price comparison of silicon and thin-film panels. How to compare quotes fairly

Compare quotes for the same location and date, and make sure each covers a similar system boundary. Useful points to match include:

  • DC system size, module power, and module efficiency;
  • usable roof or land area, shading, and orientation;
  • mounting hardware and electrical equipment;
  • installation, permitting, and maintenance assumptions; and
  • financing and expected energy production over the same period.

Use total installed cost and expected energy output, not price per panel alone. A lower-priced module may not provide better project value if it needs more area or changes other system costs.

Where each technology fits best

Conventional residential rooftops: crystalline silicon

Silicon is the mainstream reference for ordinary home rooftop systems. The DOE calls it the most common solar-cell semiconductor, and its representative 2025 residential rooftop design uses silicon modules. Higher module efficiency can be useful when roof area is constrained. This does not mean thin-film rooftop products do not exist; it means silicon is the sensible baseline for a typical residential comparison.

The DOE describes silicon as combining high efficiency, low cost, and long life. It says modules are expected to last 25 years or more while still producing more than 80% of their original power after that time. That is a general technology characterization, not a warranty for every panel or a promise about an individual installation. DOE Solar Photovoltaic Cell Basics.

Utility-scale projects: CdTe or silicon, depending on project economics

CdTe is a commercially established thin-film option that competes with silicon in utility-scale photovoltaic projects. The DOE’s January 2025 perspective identifies lower manufacturing energy and lower capital requirements for scale-up as CdTe advantages, while reporting higher silicon cell and module efficiencies. A project choice depends on current pricing, supply, performance, and the project’s requirements—not on efficiency or manufacturing cost alone.

For context, the DOE reports that CdTe accounted for 21% of the U.S. photovoltaic market and 4% of the global photovoltaic market in 2022. These are dated market shares, not current figures. DOE Cadmium Telluride overview.

Flexible or vehicle-integrated solar: CIGS

CIGS can be made in flexible forms, which makes it attractive for some vehicle-integrated photovoltaic applications where a rigid, conventional module may not fit the surface. The DOE notes technical challenges, including lower efficiency and shade tolerance in some thin-film technologies, and says CIGS modules are available particularly outside the United States. This is a specialized use case, not a reason to substitute flexible CIGS for ordinary roof panels. DOE vehicle-integrated photovoltaics summary.

Perovskite: an emerging option, not a routine substitute

Perovskite thin-film cells have made strong laboratory progress, but the DOE says commercial viability depends on achieving sufficient stability for long outdoor service and scalable, low-cost manufacturing. Without evidence of a particular product’s readiness and suitability, laboratory results alone do not make perovskite a mature alternative for routine installations. Durability and environmental comparisons need context

Outdoor protection is an important design issue. The DOE states: “Both CdTe and CIGS require more protection than silicon to enable long-lasting operation outdoors.” That statement does not mean every thin-film module has the same construction or service life; product-level specifications and warranties still matter. • HIGH CONVERSION EFFICIENCY: ZeroKor solar panels 60W monocrystalline solar cell have a high conversion efficiency of 20.5%, and its performance is better than that of polycrystalline solar panels under the condition of insufficient light

Embodied energy comparisons also depend on the exact modules being compared. In its January 2025 perspective, the DOE reports that an 18.5%-efficient CdTe module had about 35% of the embodied energy of a 21%-efficient single-crystal silicon reference module with the same rated power. This is a specified manufacturing comparison, not a complete lifecycle assessment or a general result for every CdTe and silicon product. DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office, January 2025.

Choosing between them

  • Choose silicon as the starting point for a conventional roof with limited area, then compare specific products and installation quotes.
  • Include CdTe in a utility-scale evaluation when suppliers, current project economics, and performance data make it a relevant option.
  • Consider flexible CIGS for a form-factor-driven application, such as some vehicle-integrated designs, after checking availability and product suitability for the environment.
  • Treat perovskite as emerging unless a specific product’s long-term outdoor performance and commercial readiness are established.

For any option, the useful comparison is the complete project: the power and area required, expected energy production, installed cost, and the conditions under which the system will operate.
