Solana Transaction Failed or Stuck? How to Diagnose and Fix It

A pending or failed wallet notice is not enough to diagnose a Solana transaction. Check its signature, status, logs, blockhash expiry, and RPC view before retrying.

A wallet’s “failed” or “pending” message does not tell you whether a Solana transaction reached the network, expired before landing, or ran and failed. Start with the transaction signature: check its status and details, then use any error and logs to choose a remedy. Don’t blindly resend or replace it until you know whether the original landed.

Start with the signature, not the wallet message

Find the transaction signature in your wallet’s activity or confirmation screen. Look it up using a Solana explorer or an RPC service. Solana’s getTransaction method retrieves transaction details by signature; the RPC response structures describe the returned transaction and status data.

  • Details show a transaction error: it reached the chain far enough to be recorded as a failed execution or validation. Inspect the error and logs before changing or resending anything.
  • No details are returned: that alone does not prove permanent failure. The transaction may not have landed, may not yet be visible at the endpoint’s commitment level, or the RPC node may be behind. Check again against a healthy endpoint and confirm its cluster and commitment view.
  • A repeat attempt reports AlreadyProcessed: the node’s status cache may already recognize that transaction. Look up the original signature rather than treating the repeated-send response as proof that the action failed.

Solana transactions pass through validation, fee-payer checks, account loading, instruction execution, and commit. The stage at which a transaction stops determines which fix can help; see Solana’s transaction pipeline for the documented stages and errors.

Read the error and logs to identify the failing stage

If a transaction is available, inspect its error and program logs. For developers, simulateTransaction returns an error field and logs, along with other data that can help identify the failing instruction and compute consumed. A sendTransaction preflight failure returns a more limited subset of error data. Keep preflight enabled while developing and use its output to fix the transaction rather than repeatedly sending an unchanged one.

  • WEB3 & dAPP ACCESS VIA METAMASK — Connect to MetaMask and other browser extension wallets to manage NFTs, claim airdrops, and access dApps. A large screen and intuitive 4-button interface keep every transaction clearly visible before you sign.
  • SEAMLESS FIRMWARE UPDATES & 30-DAY MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE — Apply security updates without resetting your wallet or migrating funds. Backed by Amazon's 30-day money-back guarantee — your purchase is risk-free.
  • Fee-payer or fee error: check that a fee payer is present, is an allowed account type, exists, and has enough SOL for the fee and any applicable rent-exempt minimum.
  • Program or instruction error: use the logs to locate the failing instruction; check its accounts, inputs, authority, and program-specific requirements.
  • Compute-budget error: check that compute-budget instructions are valid and that the requested compute limit fits the transaction’s needs.
  • Missing program: verify that the invoked program account is available on the intended cluster.
  • Blockhash error: check blockhash age, RPC health, and commitment consistency before rebuilding.

These are distinct pipeline errors, not variations of a generic “network problem.” Solana documents them in its transaction pipeline reference.

Check whether the recent blockhash expired

A recent blockhash is part of the signed transaction message, and validators check that it is still valid. Solana documentation describes recent-blockhash validity as roughly 151 blocks in its confirmation guide; its production-readiness guidance describes expiry as around 150 blocks, or roughly 60–90 seconds. These are approximate operational descriptions, not a guaranteed timer. Track the lastValidBlockHeight returned with the blockhash instead.

  1. Fetch a recent blockhash shortly before signing and retain its lastValidBlockHeight.
  2. Check the transaction’s signature and network status before deciding it has expired; an RPC endpoint can be stale or have a different view.
  3. If the transaction is confirmed expired and has not landed, construct a new transaction using a fresh blockhash.
  4. Obtain the required authorization or signature for the new message. Replacing the blockhash changes the message, so the old signature no longer authorizes it.

For developers building confirmation and retry handling, Solana’s production-readiness guidance describes tracking block height and expiry.

Check RPC health and commitment settings

A node that has not caught up may not recognize a blockhash fetched from another, newer node. That can lead to misleading BlockhashNotFound errors or forwarding problems. Solana recommends using the same commitment level when fetching the blockhash and setting preflightCommitment. Its confirmation guidance generally recommends confirmed for blockhash retrieval: it is close to processed while reducing the chance of using a hash from a dropped fork. A more finalized hash trades away some of the short validity window.

Understand what fees a failed transaction costs

The fee payer is charged before instruction execution, so a transaction fee can still be charged when the transaction fails. Solana’s fee documentation states a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature. The total is not a universal fixed amount: it depends on the number of signatures and, if configured, a prioritization fee.

A priority fee can improve scheduling priority when transactions compete for inclusion, but it cannot repair an expired blockhash, a missing signature, an invalid account, or a failing program condition. For legacy and v0 transactions, the documented prioritization fee is based on the requested compute-unit limit multiplied by the compute-unit price, rounded up to lamports. Because the requested limit is used rather than actual compute consumed, an unnecessarily high limit can raise the fee. See Solana’s fee structure.

Choose a remedy based on the evidence

What you need to determine Best check What to inspect
Did the transaction land or fail? Look up its signature Status, transaction details, and error
Which instruction or account caused a failure? Simulation or preflight Error, program logs, and compute consumed
Has the transaction outlived its blockhash? Compare block height with lastValidBlockHeight Blockhash and returned expiry height
Could the endpoint be behind or disagreeing? Check a healthy RPC endpoint and commitment settings Endpoint health, cluster, and matching commitment
Is congestion or an insufficient compute budget the likely issue? Estimate compute and review compute-budget settings Requested limit, compute use, and priority fee

Prevent repeat failures in developer workflows

  • Fetch a fresh blockhash close to signing and retain its last-valid block height.
  • Simulate during development and inspect the resulting logs instead of repeatedly resubmitting unchanged instructions.
  • Use matching commitments for blockhash retrieval and preflight.
  • Estimate compute needs and set a suitable limit; use a competitive priority fee only when scheduling competition is the likely problem.
  • Make confirmation tooling track block height so it can detect expiry and prompt a rebuild.
  • Before initiating a replacement action, check whether the original signature landed. Do not automatically sign a changed transaction for a user when its new message requires their authorization.

Solana’s production-readiness page includes examples using @solana/kit. SDK interfaces can change, so consult the current documentation for implementation details.
