Token ACL is a permissioned-token design for Solana’s Token-2022 program. It uses account freeze/thaw controls and a Gate Program’s allow-or-block policy to determine whether a token account can be activated. That design can involve a delegated freeze authority, but its presence alone does not prove a token is a honeypot. To assess a particular token, check its exact mint, authorities, Token ACL configuration, and the policy enforced by its Gate Program.
What Token ACL does
Token ACL, specified as sRFC37, is an access-control design for Token-2022 tokens. It combines the token account’s frozen or thawed state with a Gate Program that evaluates an allow/block policy. When the gate approves, users can thaw accounts permissionlessly; the issuer does not necessarily have to thaw each approved account by hand. The design’s configuration receives the mint’s freeze authority, which is how it can use freeze/thaw state for account access control.

The ABL Gate is a reference implementation, not the only possible policy. The specification defines an interface that issuers can use with custom Gate Programs, so the actual rules depend on the gate configured for the mint. A label such as “Token ACL” does not, by itself, tell you which wallets are allowed or why.

In practical terms, Token ACL controls account activation: whether an account may be thawed and used under the configured policy. It is not simply another name for a transfer restriction or a finding that a token is fraudulent.

How Token ACL differs from a Transfer Hook
Both mechanisms can add rules to a token, but they act at different points in its lifecycle.
| Question | Token ACL | Transfer Hook |
|---|---|---|
| When does its logic run? | During freeze/thaw and account-activation checks, including the gate’s approval decision. | On every transfer involving a mint with the hook enabled. |
| What does it chiefly control? | Whether an account can be activated to hold or use the token under an allow/block policy. | What happens when tokens move, through custom transfer-time logic. |
| What should you inspect? | The delegated freeze authority, the Token ACL configuration, and the configured Gate Program’s policy. | The hook program, its transfer-time behavior, and any required accounts. |
Solana describes Token ACL and Transfer Hooks as distinct approaches, and they can be used together. A token with a Transfer Hook therefore needs transfer-level inspection as well as any separate account-access checks. See Solana’s Token ACL guide and Transfer Hook documentation.

How can I tell if a Solana token is a honeypot?
Start by identifying the token and its control mechanisms. A ticker or name is not a unique identifier: the mint address identifies the token. Authority checks reveal meaningful capabilities, but the cited Solana documentation does not provide a complete honeypot-detection algorithm. These steps can help you understand what is established about a mint; they cannot certify that it is safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm the exact mint and token program. Verify the mint address rather than relying on the ticker, name, or a lookalike listing. Solana’s token and account documentation explains mint identity.
- Check mint authority and freeze authority separately. A live mint authority can create additional token units. A live freeze authority can freeze token accounts. These are different powers; inspect each rather than treating “authority” as a single setting. Solana documents minting tokens and freezing accounts separately.
- If Token ACL is configured, identify its gate and policy. Determine which Token ACL configuration and Gate Program apply to that mint, then establish what the allow/block rules mean for your own wallet and account. A delegated freeze authority can be an intentional part of Token ACL, so that capability alone is not proof of a honeypot.
- Look for clear, verifiable disclosure. A permissioned design may be legitimate, but you should understand who controls the relevant configuration and what restrictions apply before acquiring or using the token. A generic scanner badge or the word “renounced” is not a substitute for checking the mint’s actual settings and program behavior.
These checks address token authorities and account access. They do not settle every risk: transfer policy, liquidity and market conditions, and program-specific behavior may require investigation beyond the mint’s authority settings.

What the authorities mean—and what revocation changes
A freeze authority can freeze an account, preventing it from receiving, transferring, or burning tokens until it is thawed. Revoking that authority means accounts can no longer be frozen through that role. Mint authority is separate and governs the creation of additional supply. Solana’s Set Authority documentation explains that setting an authority to None permanently removes that authority role.
Revocation is a specific change in capability, not a general safety certificate. It does not establish what other programs do, what transfer rules apply, or whether a market is liquid. Conversely, a live freeze authority is a risk-relevant power worth understanding, but Token ACL may delegate it intentionally to enforce account-access rules.

Token ACL requirements and deployment status
The sRFC37 specification requires a Token-2022 mint using the Default Account State extension and delegation of freeze authority. These requirements help explain why an ordinary freeze-authority check may show a capability that is part of the permissioned-token design.

As of the Solana Token ACL guide checked on October 7, 2026, the guide listed Token ACL and ABL Gate program addresses as deployed on devnet and said a mainnet release would follow after audits. Deployment status can change, so verify the current cluster and program address in the official guide before interacting. The guide presents the implementation as an educational reference and says custom Gate Programs need their own security review.
The Token-2022 documentation lists completed audits for the Token-2022 program as of March 20, 2025. That statement is not evidence that every Token ACL program, custom gate, deployment, or integration has been audited. The relevant sources are the sRFC37 specification, the Token ACL guide, and the Token-2022 documentation.
