A Solana durable nonce lets a signed transaction remain eligible for submission beyond the ordinary recent-blockhash window—but it does not make the transaction permanent. It remains usable only while the nonce account still holds the matching, unused nonce and the transaction passes validation. Once that nonce is advanced, the old transaction cannot be replayed with it.
What is a Solana durable nonce?
A normal Solana transaction carries a recent blockhash that gives it a limited lifetime. Solana’s transaction documentation describes that ordinary window as 150 slots. A durable nonce replaces the recent blockhash with a value stored in a special nonce account, avoiding that ordinary expiry window while the stored value remains unused.

This mechanism is designed for workflows where signing and submission cannot happen close together, such as offline signing, delayed submission, scheduled transactions, or coordinating multiple signers. How do Solana durable nonce transactions work?
A nonce account is owned by the System Program. In its initialized state, it stores an authority public key, a durable nonce value derived from a recent blockhash, and the lamports-per-signature value recorded when the nonce was last advanced.
The transaction must use the stored nonce as its recent_blockhash and begin with the System Program’s AdvanceNonceAccount instruction. That first-instruction position is how the runtime identifies a durable nonce transaction. The nonce account must be the first account in that instruction and be writable.

- Create and initialize a nonce account. The account must be a valid, initialized System Program nonce account.
- Read its current nonce value. Set the transaction’s
recent_blockhashto that exact stored value. - Put
AdvanceNonceAccountfirst. The nonce account is the first account in the instruction and is writable. - Collect signatures. The required nonce authority must sign, along with any other required transaction signers.
- Submit when ready. The transaction can be submitted after the usual blockhash window, provided the stored nonce has not been consumed and the transaction remains valid.
During processing, the validator checks that the nonce account is suitable and initialized, its stored value matches the transaction’s blockhash, the nonce has not already been consumed in the current block, and the authority has signed. The outcome depends on when failure occurs. If nonce validation fails—for example, the account is missing, the authority did not sign, or the nonce has already been used—the transaction is dropped without fees or state changes. If validation succeeds but a later instruction fails, the nonce remains advanced and fees are collected. That consumption prevents the same signed transaction from being replayed, even though its requested action did not succeed.

After a transaction processes, fetch the nonce account again before building another transaction. Its stored value will have changed; a transaction signed with the old value is no longer reusable. These behaviors are described in the durable nonce documentation.

The 150-slot figure is the lifetime stated in Solana’s transaction documentation; it is not a wall-clock duration. Slot timing can vary, so do not convert it into a fixed number of seconds without additional current network information.

When are durable nonces useful?
- Offline signing: A signer can approve a transaction without relying on the ordinary blockhash window to remain open during the signing process.
- Delayed submission: A transaction can be prepared before it is ready to be sent, as long as the nonce account still contains the matching value when it is submitted.
- Scheduling and multisig coordination: Solana developer materials describe these as possible applications when a transaction needs time or multiple approvals. They do not guarantee execution at a particular future time.
These use cases follow from the longer validity window; they do not remove normal transaction checks or ensure that the transaction will land. The documented use cases appear in Solana’s durable nonce documentation and Solana’s guide to durable and offline transaction signing.

Solana’s durable nonce documentation says the mechanism “may be deprecated in a future release.” A June 16, 2026 discussion in the Solana Improvement Documents repository proposed soft deprecation for nonce transactions. A warning and proposal discussion are not evidence that removal has been adopted or activated on mainnet, and the cited materials do not establish a removal date.
Because roadmap status can change, check current network and client guidance before building a workflow that depends on durable nonces. The CLI reference follows Agave v4.2.1 and includes nonce commands for creating, inspecting, advancing, authorizing, and withdrawing nonce accounts. Command syntax can vary by release, so check the version and help output for the CLI actually installed.
