The title varies by employer; for U.S. job and salary statistics, the closest Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) occupation is “software developers.”
What does a software engineer do?
The work begins with understanding a problem: who needs the software, what it should do, and what constraints it must meet. A developer then helps design a solution, decides how its components should fit together, writes or adapts code, checks that the result works, and helps maintain it as needs change. Documentation helps other people understand and support the software later. These responsibilities align with the BLS description of software developers’ work: analyzing users’ needs, designing and developing software, testing and maintaining it, and documenting the process.

The balance varies across jobs and projects. Some tasks involve focused programming; others involve discussing requirements, reviewing design decisions, testing, coordinating with teammates, or addressing problems in existing software. There is no single daily routine that applies to every person with a software engineer title.
Is software engineering just coding?
No. Programming is essential in many software development roles, but it is one part of a broader cycle. A useful way to picture the work is as a loop: understand the need, design an approach, build it, test it, release or integrate it, and maintain it as the software and its users’ needs evolve. Feedback or defects can send a team back to earlier steps.

- Understand: Clarify what users or an organization need and what the software must accomplish.
- Design: Choose an approach and plan how the system’s parts will work together.
- Build: Write, adapt, or integrate code to implement the design.
- Test and improve: Check behavior, find problems, and make changes.
- Maintain and explain: Update software and document decisions or behavior so it can be supported over time.
The BLS describes development as collaborative: “Developing software is usually a collaborative process.” Software projects commonly involve other developers and may involve quality assurance (QA) analysts and testers. QA professionals focus on identifying problems, designing or running tests, and reporting defects; developers focus on designing and building applications or systems. Responsibilities can overlap, and job titles and boundaries differ by employer.
Who do software engineers work with?
Software development is usually team work rather than a solo person creating a product from scratch. BLS says developers often work in offices and on teams with other developers and QA analysts or testers. Depending on the project, contributors may have different responsibilities for requirements, design, implementation, testing, and ongoing support.

Collaborative project experience can help students learn how software work is coordinated. The ACM/IEEE-CS Computing Curricula 2023: Software Engineering discusses the value of sustained collaborative projects in education, while cautioning that one project with novice teammates does not fully reproduce professional collaboration. Projects are useful exposure, not proof that someone is already job-ready.
What preparation do students typically need?
For the U.S. occupation of software developer, BLS says a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology or a related field, such as engineering or mathematics, is typical. Some employers may prefer a master’s degree. These are common patterns, not universal requirements for every employer or software engineering role.
BLS also notes that students may gain development experience through an internship while in college. A sustained project or internship can give a student a chance to practice applying technical ideas and working with others. Neither guarantees employment or substitutes for the requirements of a particular job.

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile, updated August 27, 2026, reports a $135,980 median annual wage for U.S. software developers in May 2025. Median means half of workers in that occupation earned more and half earned less. It is not an entry-level salary or a prediction of what an individual will earn. See the BLS explanation of Occupational Outlook Handbook data and wage terminology.
Two other figures in the same BLS profile cover a broader combined group, not software developers alone:

- About 106,100 openings per year on average over 2025–2035 for that combined group. Openings include positions created when workers leave or transfer occupations, not only newly created jobs.
BLS says its outlook reflects demand related to software development involving artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, robotics, automation, and investment in security. That is the agency’s rationale for the outlook, not a guarantee of demand or pay in any particular specialty.

How can a student explore the field?
- Try a small project: Choose a problem you understand and build a modest application or system that addresses it. Focus on explaining the need and design as well as writing code.
- Work with others: If possible, collaborate on a project and practice dividing work, integrating contributions, testing, and documenting decisions.
- Look for structured exposure: Consider coursework, sustained projects, or an internship to learn how development work is organized. Treat these as ways to explore and build experience, not guarantees of job readiness.
- Compare actual roles: Read job descriptions carefully. Since “software engineer” and related titles vary by employer, look at the listed duties, skills, and education expectations rather than relying on the title alone.
