The shift is gradual, not a single industry-wide redesign: some vehicles still rely on many dedicated controllers, while others consolidate functions into domain or zonal systems and support broader over-the-air updates.
What makes a vehicle software-defined?
In a conventional vehicle, many electronic control units (ECUs) each manage a particular function, such as lighting, braking or climate control. An SDV reorganizes more of those functions so software can control them across fewer, more capable computers. That can make it easier to change or extend vehicle behavior after production, but software alone does not define the shift: the electrical and electronic (E/E) architecture must also support it.

The International Energy Agency (IEA), in its Global EV Outlook 2026 chapter on vehicle software, describes SDVs as a design shift in which software determines an increasing share of vehicle functionality. In practice, “software-defined” describes a spectrum. A car with remote infotainment updates is not necessarily built like one whose central computers can receive changes to a much wider range of systems.

The architecture determines how vehicle functions are grouped and where the computers controlling them sit. The broad progression is from numerous dedicated controllers toward fewer computers that can coordinate more functions; manufacturers may combine approaches rather than move directly from one end to the other.

| Architecture | How functions are organized | What it can mean for software |
|---|---|---|
| Distributed | Many dedicated ECUs manage individual functions. | Functions are more tied to their individual controllers; updating or coordinating them across the vehicle can be more complex. |
| Domain | Functions are consolidated into groups, or domains, managed by domain controllers. | Consolidation can make some functions easier to coordinate, while dedicated controllers may remain for other systems. |
| Zonal or centralized | Fewer central computers control a wider range of functions, organized in part around vehicle zones. | A more centralized design can support broader software layers and updates, depending on which components the manufacturer has made updateable. |
Consolidating controllers can reduce wiring complexity and help separate software functions from particular hardware. The IEA also notes potential production-cost benefits from lower material requirements, but those depend on manufacturing volume being sufficient to spread development costs; they do not guarantee a lower vehicle price.
Adoption remains uneven. The IEA reports that currently available models combining zonal architectures with extensive OTA capability are battery-electric vehicles, mainly from pure-play EV makers. Many other automakers use intermediate designs that consolidate some functions but retain dedicated controllers, including for safety-critical or legacy areas. The IEA’s chart expected the first hybrid and internal-combustion models with those characteristics by 2027; that is a report expectation, not confirmation that such models have since launched.
What can an over-the-air update change?
An over-the-air (OTA) update sends software to a vehicle remotely, potentially allowing a manufacturer to provide fixes, security patches, performance changes or new features after the initial sale. For an owner, an update may avoid a dealer visit. Its scope varies by vehicle and manufacturer: OTA capability does not mean every ECU or vehicle component can be changed remotely.

The IEA uses “near-full OTA” for capability that covers almost all software components, including the powertrain, battery management and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). That is a much broader capability than updating infotainment alone. Nor does the presence of OTA updates by itself establish how a particular change is validated or governed; those details depend on the manufacturer and vehicle.
Some software-enabled features may be sold through a subscription, a one-time payment or pay-per-use. The IEA says these arrangements can offer flexibility, but may increase lifetime costs depending on the automaker’s approach and the owner’s choices. They are not universal requirements for owning an SDV.
What is inside an SDV software platform?
An SDV platform is more than an in-car operating system. It can connect vehicle software and standardized interfaces with cloud data, development tools and virtual testing environments. Microsoft’s reference architecture illustrates this broader stack, spanning cloud-native development tools and in-vehicle components. Microsoft identifies software integration complexity, rising development and integration expense, and delayed start-of-production timelines as industry challenges; this is a vendor’s reference architecture, not an independent audit of what automakers have deployed.

Nissan’s stated platform design
Nissan’s Scalable Open Software Platform page, marked “As of June, 2026,” describes three connected elements: Scalable Open OS in the vehicle, Scalable Open Data in the cloud and Scalable Open SDK for developers. Nissan says its OS uses standardized vehicle APIs and applies Linux, real-time operating systems (RTOS) and AUTOSAR where each fits, with vehicle control functions consolidated in a central ECU.
Nissan also describes SDK tools for design, building and testing, including a virtual ECU intended to replicate a real-vehicle environment for pre-validation. These are Nissan’s description of its platform design and goals, not independently verified performance results.
Is the industry converging on one SDV standard?
No single universal SDV platform is established by the evidence available. Standardization work is active across several organizations. An ITU-T work item, FSTP-SDV, was agreed on 17 July 2026 and its programme page was last updated on 6 August 2026. It is intended to summarize SDV concepts, technologies, industry trends and standardization activity, and names AUTOSAR, COVESA, ISO, IEEE and SAE International among organizations leading related work. That activity signals coordination, not completion of a universal standard.

The Eclipse Foundation’s 2026 annual report describes a separate open-source ecosystem. Its SDV Working Group recorded 11 new members, 52 total members, 35 projects and 175 committers in 2025. These figures describe that working group, not the automotive industry as a whole. The report describes S-CORE 0.5 as an open reference platform initially demonstrated on QNX and Qualcomm hardware and designed to support multiple operating systems and hardware targets; development processes were being prepared for automotive standards.
Commercial partnerships are developing alongside standards and open projects. Qualcomm announced on 8 January 2026 that it had signed a letter of intent with Volkswagen Group to supply high-performance system-on-chips for infotainment in Volkswagen’s SDV architecture, with stated intentions around Snapdragon connectivity technologies. This is a planned collaboration, not evidence of a completed production deployment.
How should you assess an SDV as a vehicle owner?
“Software-defined” alone does not tell you what a specific vehicle can update, how long it will be supported or what features may cost. When comparing vehicles, look for concrete details in the manufacturer’s documentation and ownership terms:

- 【I/M READINESS for THE S-nn-0-g CHECK】- OBDII vehicle may not pass the annual inspection unless the required monitors since reset are complete. So you should at least read the readiness monitors and make sure they are ready. This car obd2 scanner diagnostic tool is equipped with I/M readiness function to check the operations of the e-m-issi0n system on OBD2 compliant vehicles, run I/M monitor readiness test, checking if the pass vehicle s-m-0-g inspection.
- OTA scope: Is remote updating limited to infotainment, or does it cover broader vehicle systems? Which components are expressly included?
- Architecture: Does the manufacturer describe a distributed, domain, zonal or centralized design, and what functions does that description cover?
- Software portability: Are vehicle functions designed to operate across different hardware, or closely tied to particular controllers?
- Validation and governance: What does the manufacturer explain about safety and cybersecurity validation, update approval and delivery?
- Feature costs: Are software-enabled functions included, offered for a one-time payment, billed by use or tied to a recurring subscription?
- Support horizon: For how long does the manufacturer say it will provide software updates, and what types of updates are covered?
These questions are more useful than treating an SDV label as a guarantee of capability. The IEA’s sector analysis describes the direction of travel, but it does not provide a comparable model-by-model scorecard for buyers.
Are SDVs the future of cars?
Software is becoming a more important way to deliver vehicle functions and changes after sale, and architecture is evolving to support that. But SDVs are not one uniform design already adopted by every automaker. Current vehicles span conventional distributed systems, intermediate consolidations and more centralized designs, while OTA coverage, platform choices and feature costs vary. The transition is best understood as an ongoing shift in how vehicles are engineered and supported—not as a feature that every new car already shares.
