Formerly known as OpenSDS, the foundation said it would support data mobility and management across edge, core, and cloud environments. The announcement also introduced Faroe 1.0 and brought China Unicom’s YIG object-storage project into its incubator.
What changed in SODA Foundation’s charter?
The Linux Foundation described SODA Foundation as the evolution of OpenSDS. The expanded scope covered both open-source software and standards, with the stated goal of advancing data autonomy and mobility. The foundation said this work could help reduce storage silos and enable data movement across on-premises and multi-cloud environments. Read the June 29, 2020 announcement.

In practical terms, the change was about coordinating projects and standards across platforms, rather than focusing only on software. SODA described its intended scope as spanning edge, core, and cloud settings.
What were YIG and Faroe 1.0?
YIG: an incubated object-storage project
China Unicom contributed YIG, which the announcement described as S3-compatible object storage, through the SODA Incubator. The incubator was presented as a way for projects to develop through community outreach, collaboration, and adoption. The announcement establishes the contribution at that time; it does not confirm YIG’s current version or status. The release describes YIG and the incubator.

Faroe 1.0: a framework for heterogeneous storage
The announcement introduced Faroe 1.0 as SODA’s Open Data Framework software. Its listed capabilities included support for block, file, and object storage; multi-cloud data control; telemetry; and resource management across heterogeneous storage. The intended role was to support integrated data management and mobility between on-premises and multi-cloud environments.
The release characterized Container Storage Interface (CSI) plug-and-play as experimental at the time of the 2020 announcement. That description should not be read as a statement about its status today. The available announcement does not establish the current versions or availability of Faroe or YIG.

Who was named as a participant?
The release named China Unicom, Fujitsu, Huawei, NTT Communications, and Toyota Motor Corporation as premiere members. It also listed China Construction Bank Fintech, Click2Cloud, GMO Pepabo, IIJ, MayaData, LinBit, Scality, Sony, Wipro, and Yahoo Japan. These are participants named in the 2020 announcement, not a verified current membership roster. SODA Foundation’s membership page describes the organization as a directed fund under the Linux Foundation and a neutral home for community coordination.
What did SODA say it wanted to achieve?
Steven Tan, then SODA Foundation chairman and Futurewei vice president and CTO of Cloud Solution, described the goal as: “Providing a neutral forum where both vendors and end users can contribute to building and integrating data management solutions for mobility and autonomy.” The statement reflects the foundation’s emphasis on bringing different participants together around interoperable data-management work.
