Social media terms describe different parts of making, publishing and measuring a video. A view is not the same as an impression; reach is not a view count; and recommendation factors vary by platform. This glossary explains the distinctions, with YouTube and TikTok examples identified where their definitions are platform-specific.
Publishing terms: the parts of a video post
Caption
A caption is the text accompanying a video or post. It can add context, explain what viewers are seeing, or provide information that does not fit in the video itself. On Instagram Reels, Meta’s August 2020 launch description listed captions separately from hashtags and cover selection; that historical page is useful for the terminology, not a complete guide to today’s controls. Cover or thumbnail
A cover or thumbnail is a representative image associated with a video. Depending on the platform and placement, people may see it before opening a video or as they encounter it in a feed. On YouTube, thumbnail impressions and the views that follow are distinct analytics measures; an impression does not itself mean that someone watched. Hashtag
A hashtag is a tagged word or phrase that can categorize content or link it to a topic page. Meta’s Reels launch description said reels could appear on pages associated with certain hashtags. TikTok also identifies hashtags as one kind of content information that may contribute to recommendations. A hashtag is not a guarantee of distribution.
#1 Best Overall
Reels
Reels is Instagram’s short-form video format. Meta’s August 2020 launch description said creators could record clips or upload video and add elements such as a cover, caption, hashtags or tags. Because this is launch documentation, check Instagram’s current help and interface for present-day options rather than assuming every control is unchanged.
Reach, impressions and views: what the counts mean
Reach and unique reach
Reach describes how many people were exposed to content. YouTube uses the label unique reach for an estimate of individual people who saw a video or channel. It is an estimate, not the same thing as a view count, and should not be read as an exact count of every person who encountered a video.
Impression and click-through rate (YouTube)
A YouTube thumbnail impression is a registered occasion when a thumbnail is shown to a viewer under YouTube’s measurement rules. Click-through rate (CTR) in YouTube’s impressions report describes how often viewers watched after seeing a thumbnail. These are YouTube analytics terms; do not assume another platform counts impressions or calculates CTR the same way.

View
A view is a platform-recorded playback or viewing event, but platforms can define and count it differently. YouTube says that beginning August 24, 2026, views across formats count when playback starts. That change does not mean every view is an engaged view or that every view qualifies for monetization: YouTube says its earnings and eligibility continue to rely on engaged or qualified measures. For reporting before or after that effective date, use the definition and date shown in YouTube’s current documentation.
Engagement and viewing depth
Engaged view and stayed to watch (YouTube)
An engaged view on YouTube measures a time a viewer stayed past the initial seconds; loops are excluded. For Shorts, stayed to watch is the percentage of times viewers stayed past those initial seconds rather than swiping away. These measures help distinguish a playback start from attention that continues, and they should not be substituted for the broader view count.
Watch time, average view duration and average percentage viewed
YouTube watch time is the total time viewers spent watching content. Average view duration is the average minutes watched among viewers who stayed to watch, calculated from engaged views and their corresponding watch time. Average percentage viewed expresses viewing depth as a share of the video’s duration; definitions and availability depend on the platform and format. Read each metric with its platform label rather than treating similarly named figures elsewhere as equivalent.
Likes, comments, shares and follows
These are examples of viewer actions or outcomes, not exposure or viewing-time measures. A like is a positive reaction, a comment is a written response, a share passes content to others, and a follow subscribes someone to a creator’s updates. Platforms may display or use these actions differently, so compare like with like and avoid turning a raw action count into a universal measure of success.

Hook
A hook is the opening moment or device intended to give viewers a reason to keep watching. It is a creator’s planning term, not a universal platform metric or a guarantee of recommendation. For Shorts, YouTube’s stayed-to-watch measure captures whether viewers stay beyond the initial seconds rather than swipe away, but that metric is not a complete explanation of why a video is recommended.
Recommendation feed and TikTok’s For You feed
A recommendation feed is a personalized stream of content selected for a user. TikTok says its For You recommendations may draw on user interactions, content information such as sounds and hashtags, and user information. It also says: “For most users, user interactions, which may include the time spent watching a video, are generally weighted more heavily than others.” This is TikTok’s description, not a complete disclosure of ranking weights or a recipe creators can use to guarantee reach. Creator tools and analytics
TikTok Studio
Creator tools are platform features for publishing, managing posts, reviewing performance, responding to comments or exploring monetization. TikTok Studio is TikTok’s service-specific example, with functions for creating, editing, managing and analyzing content. TikTok notes that “tool availability varies across the app and web experiences”; some features may be easier to access in a browser, and availability can differ by account or context. How to compare metrics without mixing them up
| Stage | Examples | What the measures describe |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure | Reach; YouTube thumbnail impressions | People exposed or registered thumbnail displays; these are not interchangeable counts. |
| Initial response | YouTube CTR; YouTube Shorts stayed to watch | Whether someone watched after seeing a thumbnail, or stayed instead of swiping away. |
| Viewing depth | Engaged views; average view duration; average percentage viewed; watch time | How long or how deeply viewers watched, using each platform’s own definitions. |
| Outcome | Likes, shares, comments, follows; platform-defined monetization eligibility | Viewer actions or a platform’s separate eligibility measure. |
Metric names and calculations vary by product and format. YouTube distinguishes views from engaged and qualified measures; TikTok provides its own Studio analytics and recommendation explanations. Avoid comparing raw counts across services unless their methodologies are demonstrably equivalent.
Commercial and branded content
What branded content means
Commercial or branded content generally refers to content made in a commercial collaboration or for a brand. The exact meaning and required labels can depend on the platform and the laws that apply where the creator and audience are located. TikTok for Business’s commercial-content quality standard discusses user experience, authenticity, trustworthiness and whether a video reflects actual product use. It is a quality standard, not a complete legal disclosure guide for every jurisdiction. Check the platform’s current labeling controls and the relevant local rules before publishing a paid or otherwise commercial post. Creator, profile and community
A creator is someone who makes and shares content; a profile is the account page associated with a user; and a community is the group of people who follow, view or interact with content. TikTok’s glossary introduced these and other app terms in 2019. It is useful for foundational vocabulary, but not evidence that every current product feature or interface is unchanged. Keep a YouTube channel live with pre-recorded video
Some creators use a continuous YouTube live stream to play uploaded recordings, such as music or other video programming. That is a different workflow from publishing a short-form post: it requires a live-stream setup and content rights appropriate to the material. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so a home computer and connection do not need to remain on. StreamNeo is for YouTube, not other streaming platforms. Details are at StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
