There is no single best platform for every live stream. Choose based on where your audience already follows you, which live tools your account can access, and whether you need a quick phone broadcast or a more produced setup with scenes and external equipment. Check eligibility before promoting a stream, then rehearse the format and interaction you plan to use.
Choose a platform by audience, access, and format
Start with the people you want to reach, then check what your account can actually do. Platform features, eligibility, and rules can vary by account and change over time; confirm access in the app or current help pages before you announce a broadcast.

| Platform | What the documented workflow or feature supports | What to check before planning around it |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live | Mobile, webcam, encoder, and console workflows. Vertical live streams may be discovered in the Shorts feed; Live Control Room can create horizontal and vertical versions together by default. | A channel must be verified, have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s stated minimum age of 16. Some features differ by orientation. |
| TikTok LIVE | TikTok describes possible features including effects, multi-guest hosting, moderation, and LIVE Gifts. LIVE Studio help covers access, scenes and sources, visuals, audio, interaction tools, metrics, and monetization. | Creators must meet LIVE eligibility requirements, but the reviewed official summary does not establish one universal threshold. Check which features are available to your account. |
| Facebook Live | Facebook Help documents app-based live-video effects and controls for viewer notifications. | Those pages do not establish a complete current comparison of eligibility, desktop production, discovery, or archive behavior. Verify the tools in your account. |
| Instagram Live | Current account- and region-specific availability of desktop Live Producer or external-encoder streaming is not established here. | Check in-product access before planning an encoder workflow; do not assume every account has it. |
For current eligibility and format details, see YouTube’s live-streaming guide, TikTok’s LIVE eligibility help, TikTok’s LIVE overview, and TikTok LIVE Studio Help.
Choose the viewing shape before you start
Landscape (16:9) suits a conventional wide video; portrait (9:16) is designed for vertical viewing. YouTube documents vertical discovery in the Shorts feed and a default dual-format option in Live Control Room. Its vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started. The horizontal and vertical versions share a chat and stream URL, but some functions differ: YouTube says clickable links in chat and channel description, live ads, premieres, and Live Redirect are available for horizontal streams but not the vertical live feed.

If your content is a presentation, game, or demonstration with small on-screen details, consider how those details will read on a phone before choosing portrait. If viewers are likely to watch vertically, frame faces and important visuals accordingly. Treat this as a production decision, not a guarantee of discovery or reach.
Pick a streaming workflow that fits the broadcast
Phone-only for quick updates or mobile reporting
A phone is a practical starting point for a conversational broadcast, quick update, or vlog. Use the platform’s native app workflow, place the phone securely if you will be stationary, and check framing, lighting, audio, and connection before going live. YouTube describes mobile streaming as useful for vlogging and quick updates.
Webcam for a simple computer-based stream
A webcam workflow is a straightforward option when you are at a computer and want a fixed camera view. YouTube’s documented webcam method requires a computer with a webcam. Confirm the selected account and stream settings in the platform before inviting viewers.

Encoder software for scenes, overlays, or multiple inputs
An encoder is worth considering when the broadcast needs scenes, overlays, gameplay, multiple sources, or external hardware such as a microphone, camera, or preamp. YouTube documents encoder streaming and these hardware examples. OBS is one available software resource; its official Knowledge Base includes quick-start, streaming, audio, sources, and troubleshooting guidance. OBS is not required for every live stream, and whether a particular computer setup performs well depends on the actual equipment and stream configuration.
Prepare the stream before you announce it
- Confirm access. Check the account’s live eligibility, age requirements, restrictions, and access to the specific method you plan to use. For YouTube, verify the channel and check its live status before promotion. TikTok says LIVE access depends on its eligibility requirements, without a single threshold established in the reviewed summary.
- Choose the platform and audience. Prioritize the place your intended viewers already use, and verify that your account supports the planned format, guests, and production workflow.
- Choose portrait, landscape, or dual format. On YouTube, plan the vertical option in Live Control Room before starting; it cannot be added once the stream is underway.
- Rehearse the production. Check camera framing, microphone level, lighting, and network stability. If available, use a private, unlisted, or otherwise low-risk test. A rehearsal can reveal problems but cannot guarantee a flawless broadcast.
- Prepare the show. Have a clear opening, a short topic outline, and a call to action. If guests will join, tell them how participation will work and agree on expectations before the broadcast.
- Plan chat and safety. Decide who will monitor comments and how you will handle disruptive interaction. TikTok’s LIVE safety guide points creators to its community rules and in-app safety features.
- Clear the material you use. Confirm permission for music, clips, images, and other third-party content. Meta notes that credit or non-commercial intent alone does not automatically establish permission to post material on Instagram or Threads; see its copyright guidance.
- Review the platform rules. YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and may be age-restricted or removed. Recheck current platform rules before each broadcast, especially if the subject or format is sensitive.
Keep the production simple until you find a real need
Begin with a supported phone or webcam and a stable connection. Add equipment to solve a specific problem rather than assuming a larger setup will improve the broadcast.
- USB microphone: A useful category to consider for a computer encoder workflow if the built-in audio is inadequate. YouTube’s encoder guidance names microphones and preamps as hardware examples; the sources reviewed do not compare specific models or establish that one microphone suits every creator.
- Webcam: Relevant if you want YouTube’s computer-based webcam workflow and do not already have a suitable camera.
- Phone tripod: A practical accessory for a stationary phone broadcast, not a platform requirement.
- Camera or audio hardware: Consider these when a more produced encoder stream has a concrete framing or sound requirement.
Equipment does not guarantee reach or audience growth. For workflow help, OBS maintains official streaming and troubleshooting resources.

Troubleshoot common planning problems
The live option is missing
Check the account’s eligibility and restrictions, then confirm whether the platform supports the intended live method for that account. YouTube’s documented requirements include channel verification, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. TikTok’s requirements are account-conditional; do not assume a universal threshold.
The stream is framed incorrectly
Decide orientation before the broadcast and check the preview on the device where viewers are likely to watch. On YouTube, add the vertical version before the stream starts if you intend to use the dual-format option.
Viewers cannot use an expected feature
Check whether the feature is limited by orientation or account availability. For example, YouTube documents that certain clickable links and live features are unavailable in its vertical live feed, even when a dual-format stream shares chat and a URL.

Audio or picture is hard to follow
Recheck microphone level, framing, light, and the connection in a rehearsal. Add a microphone, camera, or other hardware only if it addresses the specific issue you found.
Music or clips create a rights concern
Do not assume that credit, a short excerpt, or non-commercial use makes third-party material permissible. Use material you created, have permission to use, or have otherwise confirmed is allowed under the relevant platform’s rules.

Platform rules and interaction are part of the setup
Live features are not guaranteed just because a platform offers them. TikTok says creators may have effects, multi-guest hosting, moderation, and LIVE Gifts; check the account for actual access. Facebook’s cited help pages cover app effects and viewer notification controls, not a complete current account or production guide. Instagram’s current encoder access also needs to be confirmed in-product.
For all platforms, establish expectations for guests and chat moderation, and check current community and copyright rules. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance explains methods, eligibility, orientations, and rules at Get started with live streaming. TikTok’s safety guide and Meta’s copyright help provide additional platform-specific guidance.
