Short answer: Roblox does not officially support Linux, and Sober is not Wine. Sober is an unofficial, experimental Flatpak that runs Roblox’s Android client through a Linux-bridging runtime. It is the documented alternative to investigate if you want to play on Linux; do not assume an old Wine or Proton guide still provides a working Windows-client route.
Can you play Roblox on Linux?
Roblox’s computer requirements page explicitly says Linux is not supported. That is Roblox’s official support position, not proof that no unofficial method can work: Sober offers a community-developed route, but it is neither endorsed by Roblox nor guaranteed to keep working.

Sober’s developers describe it as experimental and warn that it may contain bugs, be discontinued, or be blocked from accessing Roblox services. Treat it as an option to try, not a supported replacement for Roblox’s desktop client.
How is Sober different from Wine or Proton?
| Question | Sober | Wine/Proton |
|---|---|---|
| Which Roblox client does it run? | The Android version, using a specialized runtime to bridge Android and Linux. Sober FAQ | A Windows-client compatibility approach. The sources cited here do not establish a current, supported Wine/Proton route for Roblox Player. |
| Is it officially supported? | No. Sober is unofficial and experimental, and Roblox says Linux is unsupported. Sober; Roblox requirements | No. Linux remains outside Roblox’s stated computer support. Roblox requirements |
| How do you install it? | As a Flatpak from Flathub; first launch prompts you to install Roblox. Installation guide | No current installation method or requirements are established in the sources cited here. |
| What performance evidence is available? | The developers claim performance can match or exceed Windows on the same computer; independent comparative measurements are not provided in the project materials. Sober | No comparable current benchmark is established in the sources cited here. |
The practical distinction is the client itself: Sober is not translating the Windows version through Wine. It runs the Android version, so Android-specific visuals, device checks, and game compatibility can matter. The information cited here does not substantiate a detailed history of Roblox blocking Wine or Proton, so claims that explain current compatibility by a specific anti-cheat event should be treated cautiously.

Will Sober run on your Linux PC?
Sober’s installation requirements list these minimums:
- Linux kernel 5.11 or newer.
- An x86-64/AMD64 processor with SSE4.1.
- Graphics capable of OpenGL ES 3.0.
The project recommends SSE4.2 and Vulkan 1.1. Its documentation explains that the Roblox x86-64 Android APK requires SSE4.2; Sober can emulate that instruction set on an SSE4.1 CPU, but with a performance cost. The documented practical target is x86-64. The FAQ mentions an ARM beta, but says it is not production-ready.

For graphics, the FAQ says recent GPUs with Vulkan support through Mesa or NVIDIA drivers are likely to be compatible. Sober may fall back to OpenGL when Vulkan is unavailable. This is project guidance, not a guarantee for every GPU or driver combination.

What performance can you expect?
Sober’s developers say it can perform as well as or better than the Windows client on the same hardware. That is a project claim, not an independently verified benchmark: the project materials cited here do not provide controlled test conditions, game-by-game measurements, or comparable frame-rate results. Actual performance can vary with the game, GPU, drivers, CPU instruction-set support, and Sober version.
Recent release notes mentioning performance, freezes, rendering, and Vulkan fixes are a reminder that performance and stability can change from one release to another. They do not establish a general speed advantage over Windows or Wine.

Which limitations matter in actual games?
Android-client visuals
Sober’s troubleshooting guide identifies pixelated outlines as a longstanding issue. Avatar clothing may also look lower quality because the Android client targets mobile texture quality; raising texture settings can increase memory use.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Some games may reject the client
The troubleshooting guide says games that use Android Remote Attestation may fail to accept Sober because it is not a real Android device. The guide’s listed affected games had Android Remote Attestation disabled as of August 20, 2026, but the feature could be re-enabled without notice. This is a changeable, game-specific compatibility issue—not evidence that all Roblox games are blocked.

Memory, drivers, kernels, and virtual machines
The project documents out-of-memory crashes, especially on systems with limited VRAM; mismatches between NVIDIA driver versions on the host and in Flatpak; and launch trouble with outdated kernels. It also describes virtual-machine use as poor or unsupported unless GPU passthrough is available. The troubleshooting guide is the place to check when one of these symptoms appears.
Does Sober support Roblox Studio?
No. Sober is for Roblox Player, not Roblox Studio. Sober’s FAQ directs people who need Studio on Linux to Vinegar, a separate VinegarHQ tool.
Quick Recap
Which option should you choose?
- Try Sober if your system meets its documented requirements, you are comfortable using unofficial experimental software, and you accept Android-client and game-specific limitations.
- Do not rely on Wine or Proton based on an old guide alone. The sources cited here do not establish a current, supported Windows-client method for Roblox Player on Linux.
- Use a supported operating system for dependable access. Roblox’s own requirements page remains the authority for supported computer platforms.
