Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is the higher-tier platform in this matchup: Qualcomm lists a custom Oryon CPU and 3 nm process, while Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 uses a Kryo CPU and 4 nm process. The published benchmark figures available for the 8 Gen 5 are from different sources and test contexts, however, so they do not establish a measured score advantage over the 7s Gen 4.
How the specifications differ
Qualcomm’s platform specifications show a difference in CPU design and process node, alongside shared Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU branding. These are platform capabilities, not guarantees of identical features or performance in every phone.

| Specification | Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 | Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Custom Oryon CPU | Kryo CPU: one prime core up to 2.7 GHz, three performance cores up to 2.4 GHz, and four efficiency cores up to 1.8 GHz |
| GPU | Newly architected Adreno GPU | Adreno GPU; the comparison listing identifies it as Adreno 810 |
| Process | 3 nm | 4 nm |
| AI | Hexagon NPU | Hexagon NPU with generative AI support; Qualcomm’s brief lists several supported model families |
| Connectivity and platform features | Qualcomm lists high-bandwidth DDR support and Wi-Fi 7 | Qualcomm lists Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4 and 5G |
| Display and video capabilities | Check Qualcomm’s current product page and the phone specification for exact limits | Up to WFHD+ at 144 Hz with HDR10+ support, and up to 4K HDR video recording |

What the process and clock figures do—and do not—tell you
The 3 nm and 4 nm labels identify different process nodes, but do not by themselves establish which phone will last longer on a charge. Qualcomm markets the 8 Gen 5 as offering “13% overall power savings” from its improved 3 nm process; the cited product-page statement does not identify a clear comparison baseline, so it should not be read as a measured efficiency win over the 7s Gen 4.

Likewise, the 7s Gen 4’s stated CPU frequencies are not enough to calculate a performance ratio against the Oryon-based 8 Gen 5. Architecture, phone power limits, cooling and software all affect real-device results.
Platform support is not a handset promise
A chipset specification describes what the platform can support. The phone maker chooses which capabilities to implement, and handset design can affect features such as display modes, cameras, connectivity, cooling and AI functions. Qualcomm’s 7s Gen 4 brief says its comparisons refer to the previous-generation Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and that results vary with OEM implementation and other factors.
What the published benchmarks show
The surfaced figures demonstrate that Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 phones and entries have been benchmarked, but they do not form a controlled comparison against a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 phone.

No matched Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 handset result in the same benchmark versions and controlled conditions is established by these figures. It would therefore be misleading to calculate a percentage lead or declare a direct benchmark winner from them. Scores can also shift with cooling, power modes, memory, software, ambient temperature and test version.
What a fair gaming comparison needs
For gaming, peak specifications or a single graphics score do not show how a phone performs through a longer session. A useful comparison would test identified phones under the same game or graphics benchmark, with matching settings and conditions, and report sustained frame rates and thermal behavior. The phone’s cooling and power limits can shape results as much as the platform’s advertised capabilities.

Which chipset should you choose?
If you are choosing by platform tier and listed specifications alone, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is the more premium option in this pair. If you are choosing between actual phones, the chipset name is only one part of the decision: compare the complete devices, including price, display, battery life, cameras, software support and regional availability.

Those are the configuration details listed in that guide, not a guarantee for every market or variant. The 15R is an example of an 8 Gen 5 phone, not a matched 7s Gen 4 rival.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist when comparing phones
- Look for tests of the specific phone models using the same benchmark version and comparable conditions.
- For gaming, check sustained performance, heat and frame-rate consistency—not only peak results.
- Compare battery life under a common workload rather than assuming a smaller process node ensures longer endurance.
- Confirm the exact regional model’s display, camera, memory, connectivity and software-support details.
- Weigh the complete phone’s price and availability against the features you will actually use.
