There is not enough comparable testing to declare a benchmark winner between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and Dimensity 8500 Extreme. Qualcomm publishes specifications and vendor performance claims for the Snapdragon, while available Dimensity 8500 Extreme scores come from a different phone comparison. Scores for the base Dimensity 8500 are not Extreme scores. The evidence points to a useful specification comparison, but not a controlled head-to-head.
At a glance: what can be compared
| Feature | Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 | Dimensity 8500 Extreme |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 64-bit Qualcomm Oryon CPU, up to 3.8 GHz, according to Qualcomm’s product page. | The official MediaTek architecture page identifies it as a Dimensity 8000-series variant. A confirmed Extreme-specific CPU speed is not stated on the cited MediaTek infographic, which covers the base Dimensity 8500. |
| GPU | Adreno GPU; Qualcomm’s cited page does not specify a GPU model in the available details. | An Extreme-specific GPU model and performance figure are not stated in the cited MediaTek sources. The base Dimensity 8500 infographic describes an 8-core GPU, but that is not confirmation of Extreme specifications. |
| Process | 3 nm, as listed on Qualcomm’s product comparison pages. | Not stated for the Extreme in the cited sources. |
| Cellular connectivity | X80 modem; peak download up to 10 Gbps and upload up to 3.5 Gbps, according to Qualcomm. | An Extreme-specific modem speed is not stated in the cited MediaTek sources. The base Dimensity 8500 infographic lists 5G-A modem performance up to 5.17 Gbps. |
| Wi-Fi | FastConnect 7900 with Wi-Fi 7, according to Qualcomm. | Not stated for the Extreme in the cited sources. |
| Direct, controlled benchmark comparison | Not established by the cited results. The published figures below come from different comparisons and should not be treated as a head-to-head. | |
Qualcomm’s feature list describes platform capability, not a guarantee that every phone maker implements every feature or achieves the same performance. MediaTek’s Open Resource Architecture page names Dimensity 8500 Extreme within its 8000 series and describes partner customization; the detailed infographic cited here is explicitly for the base Dimensity 8500. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 product page and MediaTek’s architecture page are the relevant starting points for those distinctions.

CPU performance and benchmark results
The Snapdragon’s listed maximum CPU frequency is 3.8 GHz, while the MediaTek infographic says up to 3.4 GHz for the base Dimensity 8500. Clock speed alone cannot establish which complete phone will be faster: chip architecture, power limits, cooling and software also affect measured results, and the base-8500 figure must not be assigned to the Extreme without confirmation.

Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 delivers 36% higher CPU performance than its previous generation. That is a Qualcomm comparison against its own prior-generation basis, not a result against Dimensity 8500 Extreme. Qualcomm’s November 26, 2025 announcement also claims 76% better web-browsing responsiveness versus its previous generation. Neither number is an independent cross-chip benchmark.

NanoReview’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 versus Dimensity 8500 page labels its tests AnTuTu 11 and Geekbench 6 and reports the sample counts above. 91mobiles’ Dimensity 8450 versus Dimensity 8500 Extreme comparison reports the Extreme results; the page identifies April 2026 as the Extreme’s release. Those are device-based results, not universal guarantees for every phone using the chip.
GPU, gaming and efficiency
Qualcomm lists an Adreno GPU and claims 11% faster graphics rendering and 13% overall platform power savings versus its previous generation. These are Qualcomm’s own prior-generation comparisons; they do not establish a gaming win over the Dimensity 8500 Extreme. Qualcomm does not specify the testing conditions in the cited product-page summary, so the percentages should not be read as expected gains in every game or phone.

Cooling design, power limits, ambient temperature, game settings and battery behavior can change frame rates and heat over a longer session. No cited source here provides a controlled, sustained gaming test of phones using both exact chips, so peak specifications and separate benchmark scores cannot settle which will game better in practice.

Connectivity, AI and camera features
Modem and Wi-Fi
Qualcomm lists the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 with an X80 modem supporting peak speeds up to 10 Gbps down and 3.5 Gbps up, and FastConnect 7900 with Wi-Fi 7. These are platform peak specifications, not typical network speeds; actual results depend on the carrier, network, region, signal and phone implementation.
MediaTek’s base Dimensity 8500 infographic lists 5G-A modem performance up to 5.17 Gbps. That is not an Extreme-specific speed confirmed by the cited sources, and it should not be compared with Qualcomm’s peak figure as though both were measured under the same conditions.

AI and imaging
Qualcomm lists Hexagon processor features and claims up to 46% improved NPU performance versus its previous generation in its November 26, 2025 announcement. The cited materials do not establish a direct NPU comparison with Dimensity 8500 Extreme. The base Dimensity 8500 infographic names NPU 880 and 4K HDR video support; those details should not be attributed to the Extreme unless the specific phone or MediaTek specification confirms them.

What matters when choosing a phone
Since the available benchmark sets do not provide an exact-chip head-to-head, compare the actual phones rather than choosing from chipset names alone. The Motorola Edge 70 Pro 5G and Motorola Edge 70 Pro+ 5G are listed by 91mobiles among Dimensity 8500 Extreme devices; their inclusion is a starting point for checking handset specifications, not evidence that either delivers a particular score.
- Long gaming sessions: Look for independent tests of the exact model that report sustained frame rates, temperature and power draw, not only a short peak benchmark.
- Battery life: Compare battery capacity and real-world endurance reviews for the phones. The chip’s advertised efficiency does not determine total battery life.
- Connectivity: Verify supported bands, Wi-Fi implementation and regional model details for the handset you can buy. Platform capability does not guarantee every feature is enabled in every market.
- Camera and video: Compare sample images, recording modes and stabilization on the specific devices; sensor choices and software matter.
- Value: Compare the phones’ local prices, memory and storage configurations, display, software support and warranty. No price comparison is established by the cited sources.
Verdict
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 has the clearer documented platform specification in the cited materials, including its CPU ceiling, modem and Wi-Fi details. The Dimensity 8500 Extreme has reported results from a comparison against the Dimensity 8450, but those scores do not establish how it performs against Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. NanoReview’s Snapdragon-versus-Dimensity benchmark table is for the base 8500, not the Extreme. For gaming, sustained performance or overall value, the defensible choice is the better-tested phone that fits your needs—not a winner inferred by mixing results from different chip variants and test setups.
