The 8 Gen 5 has a higher listed CPU peak—up to 3.8 GHz versus up to 2.8 GHz—and Qualcomm specifies newer connectivity features including an X80 modem and FastConnect 7900 with Wi-Fi 7 support. Those specifications position the 8 Gen 5 above the 7 Gen 4, but they do not establish a precise real-world speed advantage: Qualcomm’s percentage improvements use different predecessor chips, and the available Geekbench figures are not from a controlled, matched-phone comparison.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 vs Snapdragon 7 Gen 4: key specifications
Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 on November 26, 2025, describing it as a premium platform. Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 was announced on May 15, 2025, as a 7-series platform. The specifications below are platform-level claims, not guarantees about every phone using either chip.

Which is faster, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 or Snapdragon 7 Gen 4?
The 8 Gen 5 is the higher-positioned platform, and its listed CPU peak is higher. That supports the expectation that phones built around it target a more demanding performance tier, but peak clock speed alone cannot quantify the difference in everyday use. Phone design, cooling, memory, software and power limits affect performance, so a chip specification is not a substitute for testing the actual handset.

What Qualcomm’s performance percentages mean
Qualcomm says the 8 Gen 5 improves CPU performance by 36%, web-browsing responsiveness by 76%, graphics rendering by 11% and NPU performance by up to 46% compared with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. For the 7 Gen 4, Qualcomm reports 27% improved CPU performance, 30% faster GPU graphics rendering and 65% improved AI performance compared with its predecessor. These figures use different baselines; they cannot be compared with one another to calculate the 8 Gen 5’s lead over the 7 Gen 4.

What the available Geekbench 6 score says—and does not say
CPUTRONIC lists average Geekbench 6 results of 2,804 single-core points and 10,057 multi-core points for Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. These are third-party compiled averages, not Qualcomm results. The available page does not establish a matched-phone protocol with identical cooling, memory and software, and the surfaced figures do not provide a controlled score for both chips. Treat them as indicative figures, not a guaranteed score for a particular phone or a direct measurement of the gap between these platforms.

What the chipset specifications mean for a phone purchase
Choose between actual phone models, not chipset names in isolation. A well-cooled phone can sustain demanding workloads differently from a thin device with tighter thermal limits, and the handset maker determines which camera, audio and AI capabilities are enabled. Price, battery behavior, memory, storage and software support also belong in the comparison; no current handset prices or controlled battery, thermal or gaming results for this exact pair are established here.
- For gaming or sustained workloads, look for independent tests of the exact phone, including temperatures and performance over time—not just a peak CPU speed.
- For battery life, compare handset-level tests under similar conditions; chipset specifications alone do not predict how long a phone will last.
- For connectivity, check the exact regional phone’s supported network bands and enabled Wi-Fi features. Qualcomm’s listed 8 Gen 5 capabilities do not guarantee that every manufacturer implements every feature.
- For benchmarks, compare the same benchmark version and disclose the phone model and test conditions. Averages drawn from different devices are not a clean head-to-head result.
- Before buying, verify the chipset in the exact regional model listing, since the platform label does not guarantee that every market variant is identical.
Bottom line for choosing between the platforms
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is the premium-positioned choice on the specifications available here, with the higher stated CPU peak and explicitly listed X80 modem, FastConnect 7900 and Wi-Fi 7 support. Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is a 7-series platform with a listed CPU peak up to 2.8 GHz and Qualcomm-stated gains over its own predecessor. The evidence does not establish a precise direct benchmark margin or a universal best-value phone: make the final choice using independent results and features for the particular handset you plan to buy.
