The flagship mobile processor widely expected to be called Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 was unveiled on October 21—but its official name was Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform.
Qualcomm’s pre-event material confirmed that a new Snapdragon 8-series platform would bring its Oryon CPU to phones. The final announcement introduced second-generation Oryon CPU technology, a 3 nm platform, a new Adreno GPU and enhanced Hexagon NPU. Phone announcements and retail availability followed separately, varying by brand and region.
What Qualcomm scheduled
Snapdragon Summit 2024 took place from October 21 through October 23, 2024, in Maui, Hawaii, with Qualcomm offering online coverage for people unable to attend. The first-day keynote was the important launch window for the company’s next flagship mobile platform. Qualcomm’s official event listing is available at its investor events page, while the company’s preview and press materials are collected in its October 16 preview and press kit.
Before the summit, reports routinely called the upcoming chip “Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.” That was a widely used expected name, not a final Qualcomm product confirmation.
#1 Best Overall
Was Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 the official name?
No. Qualcomm announced the expected chip on October 21, 2024, as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform. Qualcomm said the “Elite” branding reflected a more substantial architectural change than a routine numbered update. Its explanation is in the company’s naming article, and the launch announcement is documented in Qualcomm’s release.
Accordingly, “Snapdragon 8 Gen 4” is best understood as the pre-launch label for the product that became Snapdragon 8 Elite—not as a second chip or a continuing official name.
What Qualcomm confirmed before launch
On October 16, Qualcomm said that its Qualcomm Oryon CPU was coming to the latest Snapdragon 8-series mobile platform. That announcement established the CPU direction and flagship positioning, but it did not confirm every specification later associated with Snapdragon 8 Elite. Rumored clock speeds, core layouts, graphics details and benchmark numbers should not be treated as official unless they appear in Qualcomm’s product documentation.
Oryon matters because it is Qualcomm’s custom CPU design, replacing the company’s previous reliance on standard ARM Cortex cores for this flagship mobile generation. Qualcomm has described Oryon as part of a broader CPU strategy spanning PCs and phones. The architectural background appears in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X/Oryon presentation.
What Snapdragon 8 Elite introduced
Qualcomm described Snapdragon 8 Elite as a platform-level redesign focused on CPU performance, power efficiency, gaming, camera processing, connectivity and on-device generative AI. Its principal components and documented characteristics include:

How much faster was it?
Qualcomm’s launch material claimed the following improvements over Snapdragon 8 Gen 3:
- Up to 45% faster CPU performance
- Up to 44% better CPU power efficiency
- Up to 40% faster GPU performance
- Up to 40% better GPU power efficiency
- Up to 45% faster AI performance
- Up to 27% better overall power efficiency, depending on workload and comparison
These are Qualcomm’s own platform-level claims, made under its selected test conditions. They are not guarantees that every Snapdragon 8 Elite phone will deliver identical benchmark scores, temperatures or battery life. Cooling hardware, firmware, display resolution, battery capacity and manufacturer tuning can materially change the result. Qualcomm’s recap is available at Snapdragon Summit recap.

Qualcomm identified a broad group of expected device partners: ASUS, HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMAGIC, Redmi, realme, Samsung, vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE. The company said devices would arrive in the following weeks, not all on the announcement date.
Qualcomm’s event coverage said Xiaomi planned to launch the Xiaomi 15 series at the end of October 2024. “First” can mean first announced, first sold in China or first available internationally, so those milestones should not be treated as interchangeable. China launches can precede global releases, and a model can use different processors in different markets. See Qualcomm’s Day 1 coverage.

What about the Galaxy S25?
Pre-launch reporting expected Snapdragon’s new flagship in at least some Galaxy S25 markets. That did not establish one global configuration. Samsung can vary silicon by country, model and carrier, including the use of Exynos variants. SamMobile’s contemporaneous report captured the expectation before Qualcomm’s announcement; it should not be read as a guarantee for every Galaxy S25.

Thermals and sustained performance
Peak performance is only part of the experience. A gaming phone with a large vapor chamber can sustain workloads longer than a thinner phone using the same platform. Short benchmark bursts may therefore overstate the advantage during long gaming sessions.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Qualcomm’s efficiency claims do not predict identical battery life. Screen size, refresh rate, modem activity, camera use, software and battery capacity all matter.
AI and camera features
The silicon enables on-device AI and advanced image processing, but a manufacturer must actually expose those features in its software. Sensors, lenses, computational photography, language support and regional software releases still determine the camera and AI experience.
Regional and support issues
The same phone name can conceal different processors, modem bands, warranties or update policies by country. Imported early models may lack local carrier compatibility or service coverage.

Should you choose Snapdragon 8 Elite?
- Choose it when buying a premium Android phone and prioritizing demanding gaming, on-device AI or maximum flagship performance.
- Consider Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 when a discounted phone offers substantially better value and you do not need the newest platform capabilities.
- Look beyond the processor when camera quality, update support, battery, water resistance, charging, compact design or price matters more than peak benchmarks.
- Check the exact model and country before importing: verify bands, warranty, storage, software support and which processor that regional version actually uses.
Other relevant alternatives include MediaTek Dimensity flagship platforms, Apple A-series devices for cross-platform comparisons, newer Snapdragon 8 Elite generations and gaming-focused phones whose cooling and battery design may matter more than the chip label.
