Qualcomm also claims up to 21% better GPU performance for Gen 5, but that is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent, phone-to-phone test. For a buying decision, the exact handset’s cooling, memory, software, display, battery and regional configuration matter as much as the processor name.
What changed from Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 to Gen 5?
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is the newer platform. Qualcomm announced it on May 7, 2026; NanoReview dates Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 to September 2024. Gen 5 is therefore the newer option, but its early benchmark lead should not be treated as a guaranteed performance gap in every phone.

Qualcomm’s May 7, 2026 announcement says Gen 5 offers up to 21% better GPU performance, 20% faster app launches and 18% less screen stutter. These are Qualcomm’s own claims; “up to” matters, and the announcement does not establish that every retail Gen 5 phone will outperform every Gen 3 phone by those amounts.

| Process | 4 nm and TSMC manufacturing, according to NanoReview; Qualcomm’s cited launch announcement does not provide a detailed spec sheet confirming this. | 4 nm, according to Qualcomm. |
| GPU | Adreno 812, according to NanoReview. Qualcomm claims up to 21% better GPU performance than the prior platform. | Adreno graphics, according to Qualcomm; NanoReview identifies the GPU as Adreno 710. |
| Connectivity | Qualcomm’s announcement highlights 5G and Wi-Fi 7. Check the specific phone for bands and implementation. | Qualcomm lists a Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF System, peak download speed up to 2.9 Gbps, and advanced Wi-Fi 6/6E. |
| Charging | Not stated in the cited launch information; check the handset specification. | Qualcomm lists Quick Charge 4+ support, subject to device implementation. |
Gen 5’s CPU core layout, clock speeds, process and GPU name in this comparison come from NanoReview rather than a detailed Qualcomm Gen 5 specification page. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 product page also cautions that Gen 3 has multiple variants and that specifications and performance can vary by platform version and part number. A chip’s supported feature does not guarantee that a phone maker implements it.

Benchmark comparison: Gen 5 scores higher, with a small sample
NanoReview’s comparison page reports the following results. The scores are database aggregates, not a controlled lab test using two otherwise identical phones.
| Benchmark | Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 | Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| AnTuTu 11 | 1,012,134 | 840,353 | NanoReview labels Gen 5 20% higher; its page lists 2 Gen 5 tests and 123 Gen 3 tests. |
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 1,099 | 1,013 | Database results favor Gen 5; the Gen 5 data remains limited. |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | 3,481 | 3,000 | Database results favor Gen 5; sample conditions are not a matched-device test. |
| Geekbench 6 compute (GPU) | 4,253 | 3,354 | Database results favor Gen 5, but sample depth and device matching limit how strongly to interpret the difference. |
These figures are from NanoReview’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 vs Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 comparison. The AnTuTu version is explicitly 11; the CPU and GPU results are explicitly Geekbench 6. Do not compare these figures with results from another benchmark version as if they came from the same test. Phones differ in cooling, memory, software, power settings and screen resolution, all of which can affect scores and sustained performance.

What device-level scores can and can’t show
Notebookcheck’s device-level Geekbench 6.7.1 single-core table lists 1,038 for an 8 GB Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G and 1,097 for a 12 GB Honor X80 Pro Max. Those are results for complete phones, not chip-only measurements. Memory configuration, software and thermal behavior can contribute to the outcome; the figures do not establish a controlled head-to-head comparison of the processors.
For the same reason, a higher short benchmark score alone does not establish better gaming over a long session, lower power use or longer battery life. That requires comparable phones and workloads, with sustained performance and temperature measured under consistent conditions.

Which processor should you choose?
Choose a Gen 5 phone if its full specification and price make sense
The available database scores favor Gen 5 in the listed CPU and GPU tests, and its reported CPU peak clock is higher. Qualcomm also advertises improvements to GPU performance, app launches and screen stutter. Treat the benchmark lead as an early signal rather than a promise: the sample of Gen 5 results is much smaller, and Qualcomm’s percentages are vendor claims.
Consider Gen 3 when the phone is the better overall package
A Gen 3 handset may still be the more suitable choice if it offers better value, battery capacity, display, cameras, memory, cooling or software support. Qualcomm’s specifications are platform capabilities, not a substitute for the exact model’s feature list. In particular, check charging support and network bands on the phone itself rather than assuming that platform-level support is enabled.

Compare these details on the exact retail models
- Price and availability: verify the current price, storage configuration and regional model in your market.
- Memory and storage: compare the actual RAM and storage options, not just the chipset.
- Gaming: look for sustained performance and thermal behavior, not only peak benchmark scores.
- Connectivity: confirm supported 5G bands and Wi-Fi features for the specific regional phone.
- Everyday use: compare battery, screen, cameras and software-update commitments alongside processor performance.
Bottom line on Gen 5 vs Gen 3
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is newer and leads the available benchmark aggregates, but the small Gen 5 sample and differences between phones prevent a definitive, device-independent verdict. Use the scores as a directional comparison, then choose by the complete phone specification and price in your market.
