Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is the newer platform, and currently listed Geekbench 6.7 results favor it—but those results come from small, unmatched phone samples, not a controlled chip-to-chip test. For a real buying decision, compare the complete phones: the chipset alone cannot establish battery life, sustained gaming speed, or overall value.
What changed between Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and Gen 5?
Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 was announced in September 2022, with devices expected in the first quarter of 2023. Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 on May 7, 2026, and forecast devices for the second half of 2026. These are announcement and forecast dates, not confirmation that every model is available in every market. Qualcomm’s Gen 1 launch announcement and Gen 5 launch release provide that timeline.

Both are smartphone platforms rather than standalone processors that can be upgraded independently. The phone maker’s design—including cooling, memory, software, battery, and radio configuration—shapes the experience as much as the chipset specification does.

Geekbench 6.7 results: Gen 5 leads the listed averages
Notebookcheck’s currently listed Geekbench 6.7 results show higher averages for Gen 5 in both single-core and multi-core scores. The percentage differences below are arithmetic comparisons of those averages, not a separately published benchmark result.
| Geekbench 6.7 score | Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 | Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 | Difference between listed averages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-core average | 943 across four device entries; range 940–948 | 1068 across two device entries; range 1038–1097 | About 13% higher for Gen 5 |
| Multi-core average | 2804 across four device entries; range 2772–2896 | 3273 across two device entries; range 3202–3344 | About 17% higher for Gen 5 |
The Gen 1 entries are Honor Magic6 Lite, Honor Magic7 Lite, Honor Pad 9, and Sony Xperia 10 VI. Gen 5’s entries are Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G and Honor X80 Pro Max. The sample sizes differ, and the phones are not matched for cooling, memory, software, or other design factors. The averages therefore indicate a directional lead in this database, not a controlled estimate of how much faster the chip itself is. How to interpret Qualcomm’s performance claims
Gen 5’s GPU claim is not a direct Gen 1 comparison
Qualcomm says Gen 5 delivers up to 21% better GPU performance, alongside claims of 20% faster app launches and 18% less screen stutter. These are vendor claims framed in the launch release against a previous-generation context; they should not be presented as measured gains specifically over Snapdragon 6 Gen 1.

Gen 1’s improvement figures use a different baseline
Qualcomm’s Gen 1 product page claims up to 35% better CPU performance and 30% better GPU performance versus its own previous generation. That 30% figure and Gen 5’s 21% figure use different predecessor baselines and marketing contexts. Comparing the percentages directly would not show that one chip’s GPU is faster than the other’s.
Qualcomm lists both platforms as 4 nm, but a process-node label alone cannot determine performance or battery life. No controlled Gen 1-versus-Gen 5 test of sustained gaming or battery life is established by these sources.

Qualcomm’s Gen 1 product page specifies an X62 modem, mmWave and sub-6 GHz 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2. The Gen 5 launch release highlights 5G and Wi-Fi 7. Those platform-level details do not establish that every phone using a chipset supports every band or feature. Check the exact model and regional variant for supported 5G bands and wireless capabilities before buying.

Which platform should you choose?
Choose a Gen 5 phone when the whole-device deal is stronger
Gen 5 is the newer platform, and the currently listed Geekbench averages favor it. If two phones are otherwise comparable, those facts can make a Gen 5 model the more attractive starting point. They do not guarantee a better experience in every game or app.

A Gen 1 phone may still be the better purchase if its price, display, camera, battery, charging, software support, or other features fit your needs better. The chipset comparison alone cannot establish whether an older or newer phone is the better buy.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist to compare actual models
- Compare the phones’ current prices and RAM/storage configurations.
- Check display quality, camera implementation, battery capacity, and charging support.
- Review software support for the specific phone model.
- Confirm regional 5G-band compatibility and the phone’s stated Wi-Fi support.
- Look for device-specific evidence about heat and sustained performance if gaming is important; the listed benchmark averages do not answer that question.
