How Snapchat song recognition works
Snapchat’s Scan feature can identify songs by sending captured audio hashes to Shazam, which returns matching songs, according to Snap’s privacy-by-product explanation. To start Scan, press and hold the camera screen; some app experiences may also show a Scan control. Snap’s Scan help page and Scan Lenses instructions describe camera scanning, but do not provide a complete, current walkthrough specifically for music identification. Labels and steps may therefore vary between app versions.

Recognizing a track is different from adding music to a Snap. Snapchat’s Sounds tool lets you add music or recorded sound to a Snap; that feature does not establish that recognition is more accurate or that every matched track can be opened in a particular streaming service. What the Shazam app adds
Shazam works as a standalone app on iPhone, iPad, and Android. Its documented options go beyond opening an app and tapping its recognition control: on Apple devices, you can use Music Recognition in Control Center or ask Siri; on Android, the documented options include Quick Settings and notifications. Shazam can identify music playing nearby or inside another app, and Auto Shazam can continue identifying tracks after you switch apps or lock your device. Microphone permission is needed for first-time use. Platform, permission, and feature availability can affect which routes are available.

Apple’s Shazam app guide describes these recognition routes and results. Apple also documents track pages and supported result actions, including opening tracks in Apple Music in applicable flows. The Shazam App Store listing provides additional product information. Available listening destinations can vary by region; do not assume every recognized song opens in every music service.

What each service says about privacy
Snap says audio hashes captured through Scan may be sent to Shazam for song matching. It also says Snap and its partners use Scan data to provide results, track search-activity statistics, and improve algorithms and product features; partners do not receive the account that made a search, and captured search media is retained briefly. These are Snap’s descriptions of its service, not the result of an independent privacy audit. The statements appear on Snap’s privacy-by-product page, which is in Swedish.

Use Snapchat Scan
- Open Snapchat’s camera screen.
- Press and hold the camera screen to start Scan, or use a Scan control if your version shows one.
- Follow the on-screen result if a song is recognized. The exact music-result sequence and labels are not documented consistently in the available public help, so they may differ by app version.
Use Shazam
