Snapchat icons mean different things on different screens. On the Chat screen, they report whether a Snap or Chat was sent, opened, received, viewed, screenshotted, replayed, or left pending. Friend Emojis, Story indicators, Map badges, and profile labels each have separate meanings and conditions. Use the screen where you saw an icon to interpret it—not a universal color key.
Chat screen icons: sent, opened, viewed, and more
Snapchat’s Chat Screen icon guide groups indicators by what happened to a Snap or Chat and whether a Snap included audio. The shapes distinguish these states; color alone is not a reliable guide across every Snapchat screen.

| Viewed | A sent Snap, with or without audio, or a Chat was viewed. Snapchat’s guide also lists a pending or expired Snap or Chat state. |
| Screenshot | A screenshot was taken of a Snap, with or without audio, or of a Chat. |
| Replay | A sent Snap, with or without audio, was replayed. |
A status icon reports an event, not the recipient’s reason for opening, delaying, or replaying something. For an exact graphic, check the current icon and legend in Snapchat’s app or help guide; appearance can vary with the screen and app version.

A gray pending indicator is not simply another way to say “delivered.” Snapchat says it may appear, depending on privacy settings, when the other person has not accepted your friend request. The icon indicates a pending state; it does not establish why the request remains unaccepted.

Friend Emojis and Best Friends
Friend Emojis reflect how two people use Snapchat together, and Snapchat says they can change regularly. Best Friends are people you Snap and Chat with most. Snapchat says you can have up to eight Best Friends, that the list updates regularly, and that other people cannot see your list. Snapchat documents these heart examples:
- Yellow heart: You are each other’s #1 Best Friend—you send the most Snaps to each other.
- Red heart: You have held that mutual #1 Best Friend status for two consecutive weeks.
- Pink hearts: You have held it for two months.
These are usage-based, changeable indicators, not permanent relationship labels. If your Snapchat activity changes, the emoji can change too.

Story icons: updated Story and rewatch indicator
A circular Story preview beside a friend’s name on the Chat screen means that friend has updated their Story. Snapchat describes Stories as a content type available around the Chat and Stories screens; see its guide to using Snapchat.
The eyes beneath your Story
The eyes emoji beneath a Story you posted is the Rewatch Indicator. Snapchat says it counts how many friends rewatched that Story. It does not identify which friends rewatched it, and it is not the total number of replay events. Details are in Snapchat’s Rewatch Indicator help page.

Snapchat+ planet icons on a Friendship Profile
The planets belong to Friend Solar Systems, an optional Snapchat+ feature—not a general icon set visible to every Snapchatter. When the feature is on, a Best Friends badge with a gold ring appears on a Friendship Profile. Tapping it shows which planet you represent in that friend’s Solar System; planets correspond to positions in the Best Friends list. A special badge may appear on a Bitmoji when Snapchat thinks the person is at a place such as home or school. Badges can also appear next to a friend’s name on the Map, in Friend Finder or Friends Feed, or beside a location in a Chat header. Their visibility depends on location sharing: only friends you share your location with can see your badges, and you see a friend’s badge only if that friend shares location back. You can toggle badges in Map privacy settings. Snapchat explains the feature in its Map Badges help page.

Location sharing and submitting content to Snap Map are separate behaviors. Snapchat warns that Snaps submitted to Snap Map may appear on the Map regardless of location-sharing settings; see its Snap Map overview.
Profile labels: Snap Star verification versus Snapchat+ badges
A Snap Star label and a Snapchat+ subscription badge do not mean the same thing. Snap Star is Snapchat’s verification label for a public figure, creator, or personality that Snap has reviewed. A Snapchat+ or Snapchat Platinum badge indicates that the account holder chose to subscribe and opted to display the badge or is using a subscriber-exclusive feature. Snapchat explicitly says a subscription badge does not establish identity verification, authenticity, or endorsement by Snap. Read Snapchat’s Snap Star explanation and Snapchat badge explanation.
Profile labels appear on the profile, and their application or removal can depend on Snapchat’s current criteria and the account’s state. Do not treat a paid badge as proof that an account belongs to the person it claims to represent.

How to identify an unfamiliar Snapchat icon
- Identify the screen. Note whether the icon is in Chat, beside a Story, on a Friendship Profile, on Snap Map, or on a public profile.
- Check what it is attached to. A Snap with audio, a Chat, a Story, a Bitmoji, and a profile label belong to different icon families.
- Look for conditions. Pending states can depend on privacy settings; Map badges depend on location sharing; planets require Snapchat+ and the feature being enabled; Friend Emojis change with usage.
- Compare the icon with Snapchat’s current help guide for that screen. Do not infer someone’s intent or identity from a symbol beyond what Snapchat says it indicates.
