Sanity testing is not consistently a separate category: the ISTQB glossary reproduced by ASTQB gives it the same main-functionality definition as smoke testing. Regression testing has a different purpose: after a change, it checks previously tested areas for unintended defects.
What each type of test is meant to establish
| Test | Question it answers | Typical trigger | Scope and decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smoke | Does this build’s main functionality work well enough to start planned testing? | A new build is handed over for further testing. | A broad check of essential functionality. A failure can block deeper testing. ASTQB’s reproduction of ISTQB Foundation Level syllabus material describes smoke and sanity testing in glossary terms. |
| Sanity | Does the main functionality work properly before planned testing begins? | Usage varies by team. | The cited glossary gives sanity test the same definition as smoke test. Some teams use “sanity” locally for a focused check after a limited change, but that is not a universal distinction established by the cited source. ASTQB’s reproduced glossary material. |
| Regression | Did a software or environment change cause a defect in previously tested behavior that was not meant to change? | After a modification, such as a fix, or an environment change. | Checks selected, previously tested behavior that could be affected by the change, looking for unintended side effects. ASTQB’s reproduced Foundation Level material distinguishes this from checking whether the fix itself worked. |
Smoke and sanity: overlapping terms, not a guaranteed distinction
The ISTQB glossary page reproduced by ASTQB lists “sanity test” and “smoke test” as synonyms and gives both the same definition: checking the main functionality of a component or system before planned testing begins. That makes it unreliable to claim that smoke always means broad and shallow while sanity always means narrow and deep.
Teams may use “sanity” for a focused check after a limited change. If your team uses the term that way, document the convention in test plans and release discussions. Otherwise, say what is being checked—such as “post-fix targeted check” or “build readiness smoke suite”—so the decision does not depend on an ambiguous label.
Regression testing is about unintended effects of a change
Regression testing asks whether a change has broken behavior that used to work, especially in areas outside the intended fix or feature. The test selection should reflect what the change could affect: a small code change might call for checks around a related workflow, while a broad change or shared component may put more previously tested behavior at risk.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Regression testing is not simply another name for retesting the reported defect. Confirmation testing checks whether the specific fix resolved the original problem. Regression testing looks for failures elsewhere that the fix or other change may have caused. The distinction is described in the ISTQB Foundation Level material reproduced by ASTQB.
Example: deciding what to run on a checkout build
- New build arrives: run smoke checks on essential checkout paths—for example, sign in, add an item, and reach payment. If those basics fail, the build may not be ready for deeper planned testing.
- Tax calculation changes: run a targeted check to confirm the new calculation behaves as intended. A team that defines “sanity” as a focused post-change check might call it a sanity test; another team may use a different label.
- Check for side effects: run regression tests on other previously working checkout paths that could be affected, such as relevant totals or payment flows. This is distinct from confirming the tax fix itself.
How to choose the right check
- Use a smoke test when the decision is whether a new build’s essentials work well enough to proceed with planned testing.
- Use regression testing after a change when you need evidence that previously tested behavior outside the intended change still works.
- Use “sanity test” only with a shared definition. Because the cited ISTQB glossary equates it with smoke testing, agree on any narrower local meaning before using the label in tickets, plans, or release gates.
Testing is more than running automated checks
The ISTQB Foundation Level material reproduced by ASTQB frames testing as a set of activities concerned with quality and risk, including static review and analysis as well as dynamic execution. Test execution is only one part of that work. It also distinguishes testing from debugging: testing can reveal failures, while debugging investigates and fixes their causes. ASTQB’s reproduced syllabus material states, “Testing and debugging are separate activities.”
