Choose a fitness tracker if your priority is activity, sleep and routine health metrics; choose a smartwatch if you want to interact with notifications, apps, calls or payments from your wrist. The categories overlap, so decide by the features you will actually use—and check the exact model’s phone compatibility, GPS, comfort, battery claims and any paid features before buying.
What is the difference between a fitness tracker and a smartwatch?
A fitness tracker is generally centered on recording activity: steps, heart rate, sleep and workouts. Its companion phone app is often where you review more detailed metrics. Some trackers also show the time, message previews and basic notifications, and newer models can include more smart features. Which? defines a fitness tracker as a wrist-worn device for tracking activity, including steps, heart rate, sleep and exercise types: Which?’s buying guide.

A smartwatch is more directly a phone companion. Depending on the model, it may let you preview or respond to messages, take calls, use apps, make contactless payments, view maps or play music through wireless headphones. A larger display usually makes it easier to read and interact with information while moving. Smartwatches commonly track exercise too, and some are designed for serious sports use.
These are tendencies, not strict categories: some trackers add useful notifications, while some smartwatches combine detailed sport and health tools with a broad set of phone features. Compare the individual device rather than relying on its label.

Which one fits the way you will use it?
Choose a fitness tracker for activity and sleep
A tracker is a good fit if you mainly want to record daily movement, workouts and sleep, then review the results in an app. A simpler interface and a longer interval between charges may also suit someone who wants fewer interruptions or a lighter, less obtrusive device. Those qualities vary by model, so check its actual size, weight, display and battery information rather than assuming every tracker shares them.
Choose a smartwatch for wrist-based interaction
A smartwatch makes more sense if you want to do things from your wrist rather than only collect data. Consider one if you expect to handle notifications, calls, messages, apps, maps, payments or music without reaching for your phone. Check that the particular watch supports the services and actions you need; availability is not identical across devices.

For sports, compare the tools—not the category
Runners, cyclists, hikers and swimmers should check the exact GPS setup and sport features. Built-in GPS can record a route without carrying a phone; a simpler device may instead use connected GPS from the phone or lack GPS. Depending on the watch, sport tools may include navigation, running or swim metrics, and support for an external heart-rate monitor. A smartwatch is not automatically the better sports watch: match the functions to your activity.

Some devices balance fitness tracking with smartwatch conveniences. TechRadar’s 2026 fitness-tracker guide names the Garmin vívoactive 6 as its overall pick and lists GPS and Android/iOS compatibility. Treat it as one crossover example, not a universal recommendation: the right balance still depends on your phone, budget, charging preferences and desired smart features.

Check these details before buying
Phone compatibility
Compatibility can rule out a device before its features matter. Which? says an Apple Watch requires an iPhone; Google’s product comparison says Pixel Watches are Android-only and Fitbit devices work with most Android and Apple iOS phones. Confirm the requirements for the exact model and your phone’s operating-system version before purchase. See Google’s product-comparison document for its stated compatibility and feature information.
GPS: onboard or connected
Look for explicit wording about built-in or onboard GPS if you want to record a route without bringing your phone. Connected GPS depends on the phone being with you. This difference matters for a run or ride when you prefer to travel light; it is less important if your phone is always in a pocket or bag.

Battery, charging and overnight wear
Battery life is model- and setting-specific. TechRadar’s 2026 comparison lists 18 hours for the Apple Watch SE 3 and 11 days for the Garmin vívoactive 6; these are published figures for those models, not category-wide expectations. Actual runtime varies with use and settings. If you want overnight sleep tracking, consider whether you can comfortably wear the device and whether its charging routine leaves it available at night. TechRadar’s comparison is at its 2026 guide.
Fit, comfort and readability
Weight, strap fit and screen size affect whether a wearable is comfortable during exercise or sleep and whether its information is easy to read. If possible, try the shape and band on your wrist. A large screen may help with interaction, while a smaller or screenless design may feel less obtrusive; neither preference is universal.

Price and subscriptions
Price can reflect design, materials and features, but a higher price does not guarantee better accuracy or usability. Some advanced app features may require a subscription. Check the local price for the precise model and region, and review recurring costs and subscription terms alongside the upfront cost. TechRadar lists a US starting price of $299.99 for the Garmin vívoactive 6 in its 2026 comparison; prices vary by region and can change.
Health metrics are informational
Wearable health features differ by device and country. Google says its health metrics are for informational and well-being purposes and are not intended to diagnose or treat a medical condition. Use a wearable as a source of personal information, not as a substitute for professional medical advice or care.

A screenless tracker can suit someone who wants wellness or activity data without a prominent display. TechRadar’s August 2026 update identifies Garmin Cirqa as its best screenless fitness tracker and describes Google Fitbit Air as a screenless, wellness-focused tracker. The guide says Fitbit Air uses connected GPS rather than onboard GPS and that some features are tied to a subscription. Check current availability in your country and the terms for any paid features before choosing either device.
