Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Yes—a watch face can contribute to battery drain, especially if it animates, updates frequently, or uses complications that refresh data. But it is only one possible cause. Screen brightness and Always On settings, apps, connectivity, recent updates, and battery condition can also matter. Start by switching to a simpler face, then test display settings and check for other changes that match when the drain began.
How much can the watch face affect battery life?
There is no reliable universal percentage for how much power a face uses, and the official guidance cited here does not rank faces across brands. The effect depends on the watch and the face’s behavior. Google says some Wear OS faces—particularly animated or interactive ones—use more battery than others. Garmin gives model-specific advice to use a static background on the vívoactive 5 and to avoid a face that updates every second on the fēnix E.

When comparing faces, look at whether they are static or live, how often they update, how many active complications they show, and whether the screen stays on. These are useful troubleshooting clues, not a published cross-brand benchmark. Google also cautions that Wear OS battery-use figures for apps and faces are estimates and may not be accurate.

Choose a simpler face
Switch to a static face with fewer active elements, then compare battery use under similar conditions. On the Garmin vívoactive 5, the manual recommends a static-background watch face. For the Garmin fēnix E, the manual says to use a face that is not updated every second, such as one without a second hand. These recommendations apply to those models; they are not a guarantee that every static face will use less power on every watch.

Change one setting at a time and compare days with similar wear and use. The cited guidance does not promise a specific improvement or prescribe a universal test duration.
Test Always On and brightness separately
If your watch has an Always On display, turn it off or choose a shorter screen timeout and see whether that helps. Then test lower brightness as a separate change. Google notes that brighter screens drain faster; Garmin also recommends reducing brightness and adjusting display timeout on the vívoactive 5 and fēnix E.

Can complications or apps keep the face active?
Complications can be more than static decoration: depending on the platform and complication, they may show data that refreshes. Apple says apps with complications on the current Apple Watch face continue to refresh even when Background App Refresh is turned off. So disabling that setting alone may not stop all updates associated with the active face. Try removing or replacing a complication as a separate test.
On Wear OS, check battery usage in the watch’s battery information or companion app to see whether an app or face is listed. Treat the figures as clues rather than precise measurements: Google explicitly warns that they are estimates and may not be accurate.

What else can drain the battery?
- Recent app installations: If the drain began after you installed an app, Google suggests uninstalling that app as a diagnostic step.
- Notifications and background activity: Reducing unwanted notifications or background features may help, but you may miss alerts or lose other functions. Garmin lists notification and selected tracking limits among its battery-saving recommendations for the vívoactive 5; the fēnix E manual also identifies notifications and sensor settings as factors.
- Connectivity and activity settings: Garmin’s fēnix E guidance includes power mode, satellite mode during activities, and sensor settings. These can be worth checking if the drain happens during workouts or when a particular connection or feature is in use.
- Recent software updates: Apple says background tasks may continue after a watchOS update and advises checking again after a few days.
- Battery condition: An older or degraded battery can lose runtime independently of the face. On Apple Watch, check Maximum Capacity and follow Apple’s support guidance if Battery Health says service is needed.
How to troubleshoot without changing everything at once
- Record the baseline. Note the watch model, operating-system version, active face, when the drain started, and any recent changes such as an update or new app. Menu names and features vary by model.
- Test the face. Use a simpler, static face with fewer active elements or less frequent updates. Compare it under similar days and use, rather than changing several settings at once.
- Test the display. If available, disable Always On or shorten the timeout. In a separate test, reduce brightness.
- Review complications and battery usage. Remove a complication temporarily if appropriate. Check Wear OS battery information, keeping Google’s warning about estimated figures in mind.
- Check recent apps and optional features. If an app was installed shortly before the drain began, try uninstalling it. Reduce notifications or background features only if you accept the loss of those functions.
- Allow for post-update activity and check battery health. After a watchOS update, give background tasks a few days to finish before judging the result. If the problem continues, inspect battery health and contact the manufacturer when its guidance indicates service.
Platform-specific settings and trade-offs
Apple Watch
Apple’s current-face complications can continue refreshing even with Background App Refresh off. Low Power Mode is a broader power-saving measure than changing a face: it disables selected features, including Always On display and some background measurements or notifications. Apple warns that other notifications may be delayed and some connections limited. See Apple’s watchOS 26 battery-life guide for details.
If the drain began after a watchOS update, Apple says background tasks may continue for a few days. Its Apple Watch battery-drain guidance, published September 18, 2026, also explains checking Maximum Capacity and what to do if Battery Health indicates service is needed.

Wear OS
Google recommends trying another face, turning off Always-on display, lowering brightness, blocking unwanted notifications, and removing a recently installed app if the timing fits. Its Wear OS battery guidance also cautions that battery-use figures for apps and faces are estimates, not precise measurements.
Garmin
Recommendations depend on the model. The vívoactive 5 manual advises a static-background face, a shorter display timeout, lower brightness, and limits on notifications and selected tracking. The fēnix E manual advises avoiding a face that updates every second and also points to power mode, battery glance, display timeout, brightness, satellite mode during activities, notifications, and sensor settings. Consult the manual for your exact model before assuming a setting is available.

When to suspect the battery rather than the face
If a simpler face and reasonable display settings do not change the pattern, look beyond the face: check recent app installations, notifications, connectivity, activity and sensor settings, and whether the drain followed a software update. On Apple Watch, use Maximum Capacity and the Battery Health service message as device-specific evidence; a face alone cannot establish whether the battery needs service. For other brands, use the manufacturer’s battery-health or support guidance for your model.
