Smartwatch Battery Draining Quickly? Causes and Fixes

A smartwatch that suddenly loses charge may be affected by display settings, background apps, connectivity, streaming, an update, or an aging battery. Check the likely causes in order before seeking service.

If your smartwatch battery is draining faster than usual, first look for a change in settings, apps, connectivity, or recent software updates. Display features, background activity, weak network coverage, and battery age can all affect runtime. There is no single “normal” battery life for every watch: compare the same model and size under similar conditions, then check battery health before assuming it needs service.

Why smartwatch battery life varies

Battery life depends on the watch model, battery age, settings, network conditions, and how you use it. Always-on displays, wake gestures, background app activity, mobile connectivity, and music streaming can all use power. A battery that has aged may also hold less charge than it did when new.

Manufacturer estimates are not independent test results, and they are not directly comparable across brands. Google’s estimates, for example, vary by Pixel Watch generation, case size, display mode, and Battery Saver use. Compare watches only when model, size, power mode, connectivity, and activities such as GPS workouts or streaming are alike.

Pixel Watch model and size Google’s estimate with Always-on Display Google’s estimate with Battery Saver
Pixel Watch 5, 45 mm Up to 40 hours Up to 72 hours
Pixel Watch 5, 41 mm Up to 30 hours Up to 48 hours
Pixel Watch 4, 45 mm Up to 40 hours Up to 72 hours
Pixel Watch 4, 41 mm Up to 30 hours Up to 48 hours
Pixel Watch 3, 41 mm or 45 mm Up to 24 hours Up to 36 hours
Pixel Watch 2 Up to 24 hours Not stated by Google in the cited estimate table

These are Google’s published estimates, not a controlled cross-brand benchmark. Actual runtime varies with usage and network conditions. See Google’s Pixel Watch charging and battery-life guidance for its model-specific details.

Start by checking what changed

Think about when the faster drain began. Did you install or update an app, change the watch face, turn on a display feature, start streaming music, spend more time away from your phone, or install an operating system update? A recent change can narrow down what to check.

  • If the watch offers a battery or device-care usage screen, review it for apps or features using an unusual share of power.
  • Update the watch software and apps. Samsung recommends keeping both current and closing unused background apps; its guidance notes that apps can continue running in the background.
  • Change one setting at a time and observe the effect. That makes it easier to identify a cause without disabling more features than necessary.

Samsung’s advice is for Galaxy Watch devices; menu labels and available features can vary by model and software version. Its regional support pages cover Galaxy Watch rapid-drain troubleshooting and ways to extend Galaxy Watch battery life.

Reduce display and background activity selectively

Always-on display and wake gestures

An always-on display keeps the screen visible, while a wake gesture turns it on when you move your wrist. If you do not need either feature, switching it off can reduce display use. On Pixel Watch, Google specifically suggests disabling Tilt-to-wake to extend battery life. Samsung also identifies Always On Display as a potential battery load.

Power-saving modes and app refresh

Pixel Watch Battery Saver turns off Always-on Display and limits background activity; notifications may be delayed. On Apple Watch, Low Power Mode turns off or limits selected features, including Always On and background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, and may affect some notifications. Use these modes when the battery trade-off is worthwhile, rather than expecting every feature to remain unchanged.

Apple Watch users can also turn off Background App Refresh for all apps or selected apps. Apple notes that apps with complications on the current watch face may still refresh. The setting and other battery-life options are covered in Apple’s watchOS 27 battery-life guide.

Check connectivity and audio use

Network conditions can make a difference, particularly when the watch is trying to maintain a mobile connection. The best setting depends on the watch and where you use it.

  • Apple Watch: Apple says the watch is most efficient when connected to its paired iPhone over Bluetooth. When you are away from the iPhone, Wi-Fi uses less power than mobile networks. Strong signal uses less power than weak signal; Airplane Mode can help where Wi-Fi is weak or there is no mobile coverage.
  • Pixel Watch: If charge falls quickly while connected to the network, Google recommends setting Mobile Mode to Automatic or Off.
  • Music: Google lists music streaming as a battery drain. Apple says audio played through the watch’s built-in speaker can use more power than listening through AirPods or another Bluetooth audio device.

These are manufacturer-specific recommendations, not guarantees for every smartwatch. Apple’s troubleshooting steps are on its page If the battery in your Apple Watch drains too quickly.

After an update, give Apple Watch time to settle

Apple says some tasks related to a watchOS update continue in the background after the watch is usable and may affect battery life. Its advice is to wait a few days and check again. This timing is Apple’s guidance for Apple Watch; it does not establish the same settling period for other brands.

Check battery health and decide when to seek service

On Apple Watch, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health and review Maximum Capacity, which indicates capacity relative to when the battery was new. Apple recommends contacting Apple Support if the screen says “Battery Needs Service” or if replacement seems necessary. Rechargeable batteries have limited lifespans.

That specific health-screen path and service recommendation apply to Apple Watch. Service availability and replacement options for other manufacturers depend on the model and region; the guidance here does not establish a repair route for every watch.

When to avoid a factory reset

A reset deletes data and is more disruptive than reviewing battery usage, adjusting a feature, or updating software. Do not make it your first troubleshooting step. If you later consider deleting watch data, Samsung advises backing it up first; follow the instructions for your own watch model and software version.
