SmartThings vs Apple Home vs Google Home: Which Smart Home Platform Should You Use?

Choose the smart home platform that fits your household’s phones and devices, then verify Matter category support and any controller or Thread border-router requirements.

Choose the smart home platform that fits your household’s phones and existing devices, then check the exact device and hub requirements for the automations you want. Matter helps compatible devices work across platforms, but it does not guarantee identical device support or features everywhere.

How to choose between SmartThings, Apple Home and Google Home

  1. List your current devices. Note each product’s exact model and the protocols it uses. Check that model against the platform’s compatibility information before buying anything new.
  2. Start with your household’s phones and interfaces. Consider which phones and voice interfaces family members already use. The platform documentation cited here explains compatibility and setup, but does not provide a scored comparison of ease of use or voice-assistant performance.
  3. Check the features you actually need. A Matter certification does not prove that every platform supports every device category, feature or automation in the same way.
  4. Confirm whether existing equipment can act as a controller or hub. Distinguish a Matter controller from a Thread border router, and check whether your planned device mix requires one or both.

What Matter does—and what it does not guarantee

Matter is designed to improve interoperability: a compatible Matter device may be controlled through more than one certified platform. The device, platform and setup still matter. Apple describes Matter as a connectivity standard intended to help a wide range of accessories work across platforms, while Google explains that Matter devices communicate over the home network.

Google Home and Nest Help cautions: “All Matter-certified smart home platforms and apps update to support different Matter-enabled device types and categories at different times.” Check the platform’s current support for the device’s category and model rather than relying on the Matter label alone. Google’s Matter setup guidance explains its requirements.

SmartThings: consider it when your setup depends on a compatible hub

SmartThings documents Matter setup using a compatible controller and commissioner. Its supported controllers include Samsung SmartThings hubs and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub; some earlier hubs received firmware support. Model, firmware and Thread requirements vary, so consult SmartThings’ Matter integration guidance for the current compatibility list and app and firmware prerequisites.

#1 Best Overall

  • Echo Hub — An easy-to-use smart home control panel redesigned for your home. Arrange controls on your dashboard to quickly adjust devices, view cameras, start routines, and more.
  • Customize your dashboard — Arrange devices into sections and resize them to focus on what matters most. Create a personalized layout that matches how your family uses their connected devices.
  • Reimagined for your home - With an Alexa+ and compatible Ring subscription (sold separately), get Ring camera event summaries to stay in the know. Search your Ring footage using simple voice commands. Create routines by voice, activate modes to manage multiple devices at once, and chat with Alexa to easily control your smart home.
  • Home security for the whole family — Use Echo Hub to easily arm and disarm your compatible security system, making it easy for everyone in your family to manage home security. Use the Alexa app and compatible cameras, locks, alarms, and sensors to check in while you're out.
  • Works with thousands of Alexa compatible devices — WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Sidewalk, and Thread devices sync seamlessly with the built-in smart home hub.

SmartThings is a sensible candidate if your devices or protocols depend on compatible SmartThings hub hardware. That is not evidence that it supports more devices overall: a comparable current device count across all three platforms is not established here. SmartThings documentation also explains that packaging can indicate whether a Matter controller needs a Thread border router.

Apple Home: a Matter-capable option for Apple households

Apple documents Matter support in iOS 16.1 and later, and its developer materials describe support across Apple operating systems. That establishes Apple Home as part of Apple’s Matter-capable ecosystem, not that every Matter device category has identical features in Apple Home or that every household configuration has the same hub requirements. Check the exact accessory and function you plan to use in Apple’s Matter support documentation.

Google Home: check hub and Thread requirements for your device mix

Google says a compatible Google Home hub must be set up in the app to use Matter. If your setup combines Thread and Wi-Fi devices, Google specifies a hub that also acts as a Thread border router. A Matter controller and a Thread border router are related setup roles, but they are not interchangeable requirements: check what your specific devices need in Google’s Matter setup guidance.

When should you buy a hub?

Buy hub hardware only if the platform and devices you intend to use require a capability your household’s existing equipment does not provide. For a SmartThings setup that needs a compatible hub, the Aeotec Smart Home Hub is one model identified in SmartThings’ support documentation. Verify the exact model, firmware, protocol support and regional availability before purchase. Google’s guidance establishes that some Matter setups need a compatible hub or a Thread border router, but does not establish a specific Google or Apple product recommendation here.

What the available documentation cannot settle

The official platform sources describe Matter support and setup, but they do not provide a unified comparison of automation depth, privacy controls, local-versus-cloud behavior, prices, regional availability or voice-assistant performance. Those factors may matter to your choice, but a universal winner cannot be established from these materials. Compare the specific devices and functions you plan to use, and check current requirements because firmware, hub models and supported device categories can change.
