Neither a smartphone nor a basic phone is automatically easier for someone with limited dexterity. Choose the specific phone the person can use reliably: a smartphone may offer adjustable touch, voice control, or alternative input, while a basic phone may offer physical keys. The best test is to have the intended user try the exact device.
What matters more than the phone category
Limited dexterity can make different controls difficult in different ways. A touchscreen may be hard to tap accurately, but some smartphones let users change touch behavior or use voice and other controls. Physical keys may be preferable for someone who dislikes touchscreens, but a keypad, call buttons, and menus still need to be manageable on the particular basic phone.

Start with the person’s real needs: calls, contacts, text messages, video calls, or other functions. Extra smartphone features are useful only if the person can operate them reliably; a calls-focused basic phone may be enough if its controls work for them.

iPhone: adjust touch and use alternative controls
Apple’s Touch Accommodations can change how iPhone responds to taps, swipes, and touch-and-hold gestures. Options include adjusting how long a touch must be held and ignoring multiple touches, which may help someone who has difficulty with fine motor control.

See Apple’s iPhone mobility accessibility features (for iOS 26).
Android: check the device’s available options
Google documents Android options including button navigation, one-handed mode, Voice Access, and an Accessibility Menu. The menu provides on-screen controls, and Google describes its setup in Use the Accessibility menu. Feature names, availability, and setup steps can differ by device, software version, and market; consult Google’s Android accessibility guide for the phone being considered.

What to check on a basic phone
A basic phone may be a good fit when the user prefers physical keys and mainly needs calls or a small set of other functions. But “basic” does not guarantee an easy keypad or simple menus. Test the exact model rather than assuming its keys will suit the person’s hands, vision, or preferred way of interacting.

No particular basic-phone model or carrier compatibility is established here, so verify those details directly with the device seller and carrier.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Try the phone using real tasks
Where possible, let the person test each candidate phone in person. Watch how they manage the tasks they will actually perform, not just whether they can make one call with assistance.
- Hold and reach: Can they hold the phone comfortably and reach the controls they need?
- Answer and end a call: Can they find and activate the right control without accidentally touching something else?
- Find contacts and place a call: Can they locate a person and start a call using the phone’s buttons, touchscreen, voice features, or other controls?
- Enter and correct a number: If they dial numbers, can they enter digits and fix a mistake?
- Recover from an error: Can they get back to the call or home screen after an accidental touch or an unexpected menu?
- Repeat without unwanted help: Does the person feel able to do these tasks independently, or with the amount of assistance they want?
Choose the controls that work for the person
If a smartphone is a candidate, inspect its accessibility settings on the exact model and test whether adjustments or alternative controls make the important tasks easier. If a basic phone is a candidate, check its keypad, call controls, and menus in the same way, then verify local carrier compatibility. In either case, the user’s ability and preference—not age alone—should decide.
