I turned off my smart TV’s built-in microphone, and I’m glad I did: I no longer use hands-free voice control, and the change gives me a clearer boundary around voice features. But a TV microphone setting is not a universal privacy switch. What it disables—and whether a remote can still accept voice commands—depends on the model and its settings.
Is a smart TV always listening?
“Always listening” can mean different things. A TV with hands-free voice control may monitor for a wake word; a remote may instead wait for you to press its microphone button. That does not mean every smart TV continuously records conversations or sends all nearby audio to a company. Behavior depends on the device, its microphone type, enabled features, and settings.

Manufacturers describe different activation paths. Samsung’s SmartTV privacy supplement says interactive voice commands are collected when a user activates the TV or remote control and makes a specific search. LG says that, on the models covered by its September 12, 2026 statement, wake-word audio is processed locally and discarded if no wake word is detected; speech-to-text starts after a wake word or deliberate microphone-button activation. These are manufacturers’ descriptions of their own systems, not independent audits or guarantees for every model. Samsung SmartTV privacy supplement; LG’s statement on smart TV privacy.

It depends on which microphone and voice feature you disable. On supported LG models, LG says a physical switch disables the built-in TV microphone and hands-free voice recognition. Voice input through the remote can still be available if enabled and deliberately started by pressing its microphone button. Samsung describes a software control for voice-recognition data collection and warns that disabling it may prevent some voice-recognition features from working. The exact controls vary by brand, model, region, and software version; there is no reliable menu path to give without identifying the set. LG’s statement; Samsung’s privacy supplement.

Built-in microphone versus remote microphone
A physical TV switch, a software voice setting, and a phone-app microphone permission are different controls. Switching off a built-in microphone does not necessarily disable a microphone in the remote or a mobile app. For example, LG says remote-microphone voice input may remain available when the built-in mic is switched off, provided that feature is enabled and the user presses the button. LG’s voice-search instructions also describe starting a command with the remote’s microphone button. LG’s voice-search instructions.
Wake-word detection versus an active command
Hands-free voice control and button-activated search are not the same event. LG says supported models process wake-word audio locally and discard it when no wake word is detected; an active command begins after a wake word or microphone-button activation. Samsung’s privacy supplement describes interactive voice search as following a user’s activation of the TV or remote. These statements apply to the manufacturers’ described systems, not to every smart TV or every service used by one.

Does switching off the mic stop all TV data collection?
No. Voice controls and viewing-data recognition can be separate features. Roku’s privacy policy distinguishes Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), channel access to remote or mobile microphones, and retention of voice recordings. Turning off a microphone-related option therefore does not, by itself, establish that ACR or other data collection is off; check those controls separately in the settings for your device and platform. How to check your TV’s controls without guessing
- Identify the exact set. Find its model number and software version in the TV’s system or support information, or on its label. Menu names and available controls can differ across models and regions.
- Look for a physical microphone switch. If the manufacturer documents one for your model, use it to disable the built-in microphone. LG says this option exists on supported models; it should not be assumed to exist on every set.
- Review voice-recognition settings. Check the TV’s privacy or voice-control settings for controls related to voice recognition or voice-data collection. Samsung says disabling voice-recognition data collection may make some voice features unavailable.
- Check the remote and any companion app separately. Determine whether the remote has a microphone button and whether voice input is enabled. If you use a phone app, review its microphone permission as well; that permission is separate from a TV’s built-in microphone control.
- Review viewing-recognition settings separately. If your platform offers ACR or similar viewing-data controls, inspect them independently of voice settings. Roku’s policy treats ACR and microphone-related controls as distinct.
What you give up by disabling voice control
You may lose hands-free commands or other voice-recognition features. A remote-button search can remain an option on some setups, but its availability depends on the remote, TV, and enabled settings. LG notes that controlling a connected set-top box through voice search can require integrated remote setup. LG’s voice-search instructions.

For me, that trade-off is worthwhile: I prefer not to use hands-free voice control. Turning off a TV microphone is a targeted choice about voice access, not proof that the entire television has stopped collecting data. To know what changed on your set, verify its own controls and review separate viewing-data settings.
