Smart TV Connections: What to Check Before Setting Network Rules

A smart TV’s connection list is not proof of what data it sends. Here’s how to review privacy controls, identify the TV on your router, and choose network rules without needlessly breaking streaming or casting.

You can give a smart TV its own network rules, but a list of connections is not proof that the TV is sending sensitive information. Start by checking the TV’s privacy settings and identifying it in your router, then choose a control that matches your goal: limit internet access, filter some domains, or isolate the TV from other devices. The exact options depend on your TV, router, and firmware.

Why is my smart TV connecting to so many sites?

A TV may contact multiple internet services to support streaming, software updates, account features, advertising, or other connected functions. A router connection list or DNS log can show destinations or attempted lookups, but it does not, by itself, establish what information was transmitted or why a particular connection occurred.

A 2019 study, “Characterizing Smart Home IoT Traffic in the Wild”, reported that 5.9% of smart-TV hostnames in its observed dataset appeared on the study’s ad and tracker lists. That is a share of hostnames under that study’s methods—not a share of all TV traffic, a measure of personal data collected, or a current rate for every television.

The same paper reported that 68% of smart TVs in its sample accessed Google DNS servers, and its summary separately reported 72% for smart TVs using hard-coded Google DNS. Those are distinct measures and should not be collapsed into one. The researchers also found that smart TVs generated around 20% of their web traffic over HTTP in their analysis. These are study-era observations, not current universal figures; there is no established current statistic for how much outbound traffic today’s smart TVs generate or what fraction is telemetry.

What a connection log can and cannot tell you

  • It can show: depending on the router or logging tool, destination domains, IP addresses, DNS requests, or blocked connection attempts.
  • It cannot prove by itself: what data was in a connection, whether a destination was contacted for tracking, or whether the same behavior applies to other models or software versions.
  • It may miss activity: DNS filtering only sees requests that use the filtered resolver, and some devices may use hard-coded public DNS instead.

How can I give my TV its own network rules?

Work from the least disruptive controls to the most restrictive. Router menus and feature names differ, so use the manual for your exact model and firmware rather than assuming a setting exists or behaves the same on another router.

  1. Review the TV’s own settings. Look for privacy, advertising, viewing-data, or content-recognition controls. The labels and choices depend on the manufacturer, model, market, and software.
  2. Identify the TV in your router. Open the router’s connected-device or client list and match the TV using its device name or network address. If the label is unclear, compare the list while the TV is connected and disconnected.
  3. Use a per-device schedule or internet block if available. A router may let you pause or schedule internet access for one device. Confirm whether the rule blocks only internet access or also local-network communication.
  4. Consider a guest or IoT network. This can separate the TV from trusted home devices while retaining internet access, but check whether that network permits local discovery and casting if you use those features.
  5. Use VLAN and firewall rules for finer control. Where supported, segmentation can separate the TV from other devices, while firewall rules can control which destinations or types of traffic it may reach. A VLAN alone is not a content filter.

NIST’s SP 1800-15 practice guide describes Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD), a mechanism through which a device or manufacturer can specify network communications needed for the device’s intended function. A MUD-capable network can permit those communications and block others, including rules for external hosts and local-device traffic. NIST describes this as a least-required-communications model; it does not mean every TV supplies a MUD profile or every home router supports MUD.

Router support is model-specific. For example, ASUS documentation describes VLAN support for Wi-Fi 7 models with Guest Network Pro or ExpertWiFi products and lists an IoT Network feature. That is not evidence that every ASUS router—or routers from other manufacturers—offer the same controls.

Which control should I choose?

Approach Scope and enforcement Likely trade-off
TV privacy settings TV-level controls for supported data-related features Available settings vary by model, market, and software; they do not replace router rules.
DNS filtering Hostname filtering for requests that use the chosen resolver and match its blocklist Lists can be incomplete or produce false positives, and devices may bypass the resolver.
Per-device internet block or schedule One device, as enforced by a router feature May interrupt streaming, updates, and other internet-dependent functions.
Guest or IoT network Separates devices if the network is configured to isolate them Local discovery, casting, or remote-control features may not work across the separation.
VLAN plus firewall policy Can separate the TV from other devices and restrict destinations when the equipment supports the rules Requires compatible equipment and more configuration; a VLAN by itself does not filter content.

DNS filtering is a convenient first layer, not a guarantee that every connection will be controlled. The 2019 study notes limitations in blocklist coverage and reports devices using hard-coded public DNS. A firewall rule that denies all outbound access is stronger, but it can also disable smart features. Choose based on whether your priority is reducing data-related features, limiting internet access, or preventing the TV from reaching other home devices.

Will blocking internet access stop apps, casting, or updates?

It can. Streaming apps and software updates generally need internet access; voice and account features may as well. Casting and phone-based remote controls can depend on local discovery or communication between devices, which an isolated guest network or firewall rule may block. The exact effect depends on the TV, app, router configuration, and how the feature communicates.

  • Before applying a deny rule, list the functions you rely on: streaming, updates, casting, voice features, local discovery, and remote-control apps.
  • Change one rule at a time and check which functions still work.
  • Keep a way to reverse the setting, such as router access over a separate device or a documented rollback path.
  • If a feature stops working, restore the last change first; then consider a narrower rule or a separate network that preserves the required local communication.

NIST’s least-privilege approach is a useful model, not a promise that a particular consumer configuration will preserve every TV function. A practical policy is one you can understand, test, and undo.

What can TV privacy settings control?

Manufacturer settings can address some data-related features, but their scope varies. In a September 12, 2026 statement, LG says its Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) may operate on supported sources such as Live TV and HDMI-connected devices, but not within third-party apps such as Netflix or YouTube available through LG Apps. LG says ACR can process content-identification fingerprints alongside device, source, network, and consent information, and that users can disable the feature in settings. The statement also qualifies controls and optional services by market. These statements describe LG’s products and should not be assumed to apply to other manufacturers or models.
