Camera hardware, shutters, and privacy controls vary by model and market. Covering a lens blocks its view; it does not by itself turn off a microphone or prove that other data collection has stopped.
Does your smart TV have a camera?
Not every smart TV has a camera, and the available manufacturer documentation does not establish how common cameras are across all models. Some televisions have a camera built into the set; others work with a separate accessory. For example, Sony BRAVIA Cam and LG Smart Cam are external accessories for supported TVs.

Look for a lens or retractable camera around the screen bezel, then check the manual and support page for your exact model and market. A camera may be concealed when retracted, so appearance alone is not conclusive. Do not assume that instructions for one model apply to another.
How to cover or retract the camera

Samsung’s Hong Kong English SmartTV privacy supplement says its camera can be covered and disabled, but advanced services will not be available while it is disabled. That statement is specific to the supplement’s supported products, not a universal description of Samsung TVs. Check the Samsung SmartTV privacy supplement alongside your model documentation.

What a camera cover does—and does not do
A closed shutter or cover is a physical barrier between the lens and the room. It can also make features that rely on the camera unavailable: Sony says BRAVIA Cam functions require an open shutter, while Samsung describes camera-dependent motion and face recognition as unavailable on the cited F Series models when the camera is retracted.
A lens cover is not evidence that the camera electronics are powered off, that the TV’s microphone is disabled, or that all data collection has stopped. Treat camera and microphone privacy as separate settings. LG says its Smart Cam has a built-in microphone and that, depending on the app, camera and microphone may have separate on/off functions. Check the controls for the specific accessory, TV, and app you use.

Data-handling statements also have a defined scope. Sony’s help guide for supported models says camera-sensing images are not sent to the network and describes a control for clearing data collected by the camera unit. That information concerns the documented camera-sensing functions and models; it should not be generalized to every camera feature or manufacturer. See Sony’s camera-sensing help guide.
Improve the privacy of a connected TV camera
The Federal Trade Commission’s advice is general guidance for connected cameras, not a report of a smart-TV camera breach. It recommends thinking about privacy before enabling remote camera access, keeping software updated, using strong, unique passwords, and enabling available security features. - Keep the physical shutter closed or camera retracted when you do not need the camera.
- Review camera and microphone permissions separately, including permissions inside individual apps.
- Install available TV and accessory software updates.
- Use a strong, unique password for any account that enables remote viewing, and avoid enabling remote access unless you need it.
- Check the exact model’s privacy documentation for supported controls and data handling.
LG’s September 12, 2026 statement says its TVs do not continuously record or transmit users’ conversations and describes voice interaction activated by a supported wake word or remote button.
