Smart Toasters, Google and Your Privacy: What the ICO Actually Found

The ICO’s smart-toaster example highlights a gap in smart-device privacy awareness, but it is not evidence that Google tracks toast habits. Here’s what the survey says and what you can do.

The ICO did not find that Google—or any named toaster—has learned how you like your toast. Its June 2026 announcement used a smart toaster to illustrate a broader privacy concern: many people own connected devices but do not feel they understand how those devices collect and use personal data. Here is what the UK survey established, what Google says about its connected-home services, and how to check a device before you bring it home.

What the ICO’s toaster finding means—and what it doesn’t

On 11 June 2026, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) published “Think your smart toaster is just making toast? Think again.” The announcement reported results from a survey of 2,080 UK adults, fielded from 15 to 18 May 2026 with a sample designed to represent the UK population.

The ICO said 75% of respondents would be surprised to learn that a smart toaster gathered personal data; 74% said they would be surprised about a smart toothbrush. Those figures measure respondents’ expectations. They do not show that a particular toaster or toothbrush collects data, identify a device or manufacturer, or describe what information might be collected.

Nor does the announcement establish that Google makes a toaster or knows a reader’s toast settings. The toaster is an example in a wider discussion of connected devices and informed consent—not evidence of Google tracking anyone’s breakfast.

What the survey says about smart-device awareness

The ICO reported that 97% of respondents owned at least one smart device, yet just 14% said they clearly understood how smart devices collect and use personal data. The gap is about reported ownership and understanding across the UK survey; it is not a measure of how much data any individual device collects.

Respondents also expressed mixed attitudes toward data-driven features: 43% said they were willing to buy smart devices for benefits such as personalization or automated routines, 42% said they had data concerns when buying, and 15% said they actively avoided the technology for that reason. These are reported consumer attitudes, not measured purchasing behavior.

Google says the information collected and how it is used vary by product, service, and configuration. Its explanation also describes limits on advertising use for some data from certain Nest devices. For example, it refers to direct interactions with specified devices historically associated with Nest accounts when those interactions do not use a Google service such as Assistant. These statements describe Google’s connected-home policies; they do not establish toaster data collection or apply uniformly to every device.

How to assess a connected device before buying

The ICO’s guidance for smart-device manufacturers and developers says products should collect only data they need, explain how data is used, and give people meaningful control. When weighing devices, look for evidence of those basics rather than assuming that a convenient feature requires every permission requested.

  • Data collected: Find out what information the device and its companion app collect, including audio, video, sensor readings, usage, and technical data where relevant.
  • Purpose and explanation: Check whether the provider explains why each category is needed and how it may be used or shared.
  • Permissions and controls: See whether you can decline permissions that do not seem necessary for the feature you want, and whether the controls are clear and usable.
  • Security upkeep: Look for information about software updates and account protections, rather than treating internet connectivity as a sign of good security.

Five steps the ICO recommends for protecting your data

  1. Research before buying. Check what data the device collects and how the provider says it uses it.
  2. Review permissions during setup. Limit access and decline requests that seem unreasonable for the device’s function.
  3. Secure the account. Use a strong, unique password and enable two-step verification when available.
  4. Install software updates. Keep the device’s software up to date.
  5. Reset before disposal. Factory-reset the device before selling it or throwing it away.

What the ICO is asking manufacturers to do

The ICO says it has finalised guidance for smart-device manufacturers and developers. In its announcement, it summarized the guidance as requiring necessary data collection, transparency about data use, and meaningful user control. William Malcolm, the ICO’s Executive Director for Regulatory Risk, said: “We are clear that smart product companies must do better, making sure people understand what they’re agreeing to and are not just handing over their data by default. Where organisations are not giving you clear choices and confidence, we will take action to protect the public.”

The announcement said the ICO planned to engage with connected-TV manufacturers during 2026 to assess transparency and consent. That was a stated plan, not confirmation of what the regulator has done since.
