What each type of control does
In-wall smart switches
A smart switch replaces or works alongside a conventional wall control, adding features such as app access, schedules, scenes, or voice control. Some models also report energy use. The essential first question is whether the exact model fits the circuit you intend to control.

Touchscreen switches
A touchscreen switch remains a wall control for electrical loads but adds a display for touch-operated functions or scene shortcuts. Aqara’s S100 US (WS-K06E), for example, is a two-channel touchscreen switch with Matter and Thread support and energy-use monitoring. Its form factor does not make it a general-purpose home dashboard.

A smart-home control panel is a screen-based interface for a collection of compatible devices or functions. It may be mounted on a wall or placed on a desk, and its capabilities depend on the system and integrations behind it. A panel can complement ordinary switches rather than replace every one.

Check the circuit before choosing a hardwired switch
Do not select a switch by appearance or protocol alone. A model’s circuit type, wiring, voltage, and load ratings must match the installation. The examples below are product-specific specifications, not universal smart-switch requirements.
- Tapo S515: TP-Link lists 100–120 V, 50/60 Hz, a 15 A general-use maximum, a 600 W incandescent maximum, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. It documents use on single-pole, 3-way, and 4-way circuits, but multi-way installations require a constant flow of power and specific placement. Follow the model’s installation documentation for the exact circuit.
- Tapo TS15: TP-Link lists 100–120 V, 50/60 Hz and a 15 A general-use maximum. It is a single-pole model and is not compatible with 3-way wiring.
- Aqara S100 US: Aqara lists 100–240 V, a maximum of 10 A for incandescent loads or 400 W for LED/CFL loads, and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread. These are US-market model specifications; consult the documentation for the regional version you are considering.
Before buying, confirm the voltage, load type and rating, line/neutral/load wiring requirements, and whether the circuit is single-pole or multi-way. TP-Link advises consulting a qualified electrician if you are unsure about wiring. A hardwired installation involves mains electricity; do not assume that one model’s wiring arrangement applies to another.

Understand what Matter does—and does not—promise
Matter support can help devices work with compatible smart-home platforms, but the Matter label alone does not guarantee every feature is available through every ecosystem. TP-Link says a selected third-party platform hub is required for the S515’s Matter integration. Aqara says availability of the S100’s wireless-button and power-monitoring functions varies by Matter platform.
Check the requirements for both ends of the connection: the device’s model and regional version, the controller or hub, and the particular feature you want to use. Basic switching may work while energy reporting or a button function remains available only through the manufacturer’s app or selected hardware.

Choose a panel by placement and system, not screen size
A desktop panel and a wall-mounted panel solve different placement problems. The Aqara Panel Hub S1 Plus (MP-K05D) is designed for desktop use, takes 5 V, 2 A power input, and connects through Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and Bluetooth. Its device control runs through Aqara Home, and it can bridge Aqara Zigbee accessories to Matter.
ABB OneTouch is a wall-mounted interface tied to ABB-free@home and ABB Welcome door-entry systems. ABB describes its OneTouch as managing door answering and home functions from one panel, and supports Matter-enabled devices within that ecosystem. That does not mean every Matter device function is exposed on the panel. Confirm that your existing or planned ABB system and the specific devices you own are supported.

Use energy monitoring as information, not a savings promise
Monitoring can show consumption, but a usage reading does not establish that a device will reduce your bill. The product information for the S515 and S100 describes energy monitoring; it does not establish a generally applicable, independently verified energy-savings figure. For the S515 specifically, TP-Link says most Matter-enabled apps do not yet support the monitoring feature and points users to its Tapo app.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 【Matter: All-Round Compatibility】With Matter, users are no longer tied to specific platforms and works with all certified smart home platforms, such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. You can control all your smart home devices from a single app, reducing the need for multiple apps for different devices.
- 【Matter: Smooth LAN Control】With Matter, all devices in your LAN communicate efficiently, even if your internet goes offline. A direct device-to-device interaction eliminates the need for a 'forwarding' device. For instance, a Matter switch or sensor can control a Matter bulb without any cloud service. Once set up, direct communication between Matter devices on your local network is easily achieved.
- 【Matter: Multi-Admin】Matter also allows you to control devices via multiple smart home systems at the same time through its Multi-Admin feature. That means you can turn on your lights from the SmartThings app on a Samsung smartphone, dim them by asking Alexa on an Amazon Echo speaker, and then turn them off from the Apple Home app on an iPad.
- 【App-Guided Install】The Tapo app guides you through step-by-step setup. Requires neutral wiring and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Consulting an electrician is recommended if you’re unfamiliar with electrical wiring.
- 【Voice Control】Enjoy the hands-free convenience of controlling the lights in your home with your voice via Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant. Perfect for times when your hands are full or entering a dark room.
A practical buying checklist
- Decide what needs controlling. For one lighting circuit, look at an in-wall or touchscreen switch. For a shared dashboard across compatible devices or functions, consider a panel.
- Match the electrical installation. Identify circuit type, voltage, load, and wiring requirements, then compare them with the exact regional model documentation. For multi-way circuits, verify the manufacturer’s stated placement and wiring rather than relying on a generic label.
- Map the platform and hub. Confirm that your controller is supported and whether a hub is required. Check each must-have feature separately, especially energy data, wireless buttons, bridges, or device-specific controls.
- Choose the right physical location. Decide whether a wall control at the circuit or a desktop/wall panel is more useful to the people using the home.
- Separate claims from evidence. Treat manufacturer capacity or laboratory statements as vendor claims, not independent performance tests. For example, TP-Link attributes an over-nine-times relay-life extension for the S515’s zero-crossing detection to laboratory results; it says actual effects vary with working conditions and that the feature is mainly suitable for capacitive loads such as lights, TVs, computers, and chargers. This is not a general switch-life guarantee.
