How much do smart sockets cost?
“Smart socket” can refer to different products. The prices below are for plug-in adapters that fit an existing outlet, not in-wall smart receptacles, which are a separate product and installation category. The examples are US-market products; they do not establish typical prices elsewhere.

Energy monitoring
Basic smart plugs provide on/off control, scheduling or timers. Energy-monitoring models add usage information, which can make them a different price tier. For example, TP-Link’s 2023 Kasa KP125M announcement lists higher pack MSRPs than the single-plug Tapo P125M announcement. That comparison is between specific products and dated manufacturer prices, not proof that monitoring always costs a particular amount more.
Monitoring provides information, not guaranteed savings. The cited product information does not establish how much a household will save.

Matter and your smart-home platform
Matter support can matter if you want a plug to work with a compatible smart-home platform. TP-Link lists Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings compatibility for the cited Matter plugs. Check the exact model’s compatibility and any required home controller before purchasing; platform support should not be assumed for every product described as a smart plug.
What should you check before buying?
- Exact model and pack count: Similar product names can hide meaningful differences. Do not confuse the P125M entry plug with the P110M energy-monitoring model.
- Outlet fit: Check the plug’s dimensions if you plan to use an adjacent outlet. The cited sources do not provide a consistent size comparison across these examples.
- Electrical rating and appliance needs: Verify the exact model’s rating against the appliance requirements. Do not assume a plug is suitable for a high-draw appliance based only on its category or price.
- Certification and warranty: Confirm these details for the model you are considering. TP-Link specifically says the Kasa KP125M is UL certified, uses a flame-retardant design and includes a two-year limited warranty; those claims do not establish the same details for other plugs.
- Current price and availability: Treat old MSRPs as reference points, not live offers. Retail prices and stock can change.
Does a Matter plug work without internet?
TP-Link describes the cited Matter plugs as communicating over the local network when the home internet connection is offline. That is a local-control claim, not a guarantee that every app function, remote access feature or cloud-dependent service will work without internet. Check the model’s documentation and the role of your home controller if offline operation is important.
