A smoke alarm, water-leak detector, motion sensor, and environmental monitor have different jobs, and their apps, cloud connections, and privacy controls can differ too. To understand what your device collects, check its current privacy notice and setup flow; then review who can access its data and how to limit retention.
What data can a smart sensor collect?
“Smart sensor” describes a range of devices, not one standard data category. NIST includes smoke and water-leak detectors among consumer IoT sensors, but its category-level research does not provide a complete inventory of readings, app telemetry, account information, or cloud retention for every model. Do not assume that a sensor records audio, tracks location, or measures occupancy unless its documentation says so.

For your specific device, look in the manufacturer’s current privacy notice, setup instructions, and app settings. Ask:
- What readings or events does the device need to perform its stated function?
- Does it communicate with a hub, phone app, or cloud service? Confirm this in current product documentation rather than assuming.
- What account, diagnostic, or usage information does the companion app collect?
- Can you view, export, delete, or limit retention of the information?
- Which people or services can access shared accounts or receive alerts?
- What happens to stored information when you reset, transfer, or stop using the device?
These are questions to check, not claims that every sensor collects each type of information. Product-specific answers require documentation for the exact model and, where relevant, its app and service.

Privacy and security are related, but different
Privacy concerns what information is collected, how it is used or shared, how long it is retained, and what can be inferred from it. Security concerns protection against unauthorized access or compromise. The risks can overlap: an account breach, for example, could expose information that raises privacy concerns. NIST’s smart-home research treats network security, information privacy, and physical safety as connected areas of concern.
NIST IR 8330 (2020) states: “Smart home technologies may expose adopters to increased risk to network security, information privacy, and physical safety.” NIST’s research also discusses unclear data practices, possible unwanted surveillance or advertising, inferences about household members, and device compromise. These are risk categories, not evidence that every sensor engages in those practices or has been compromised.

- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
What NIST’s survey says about users’ perceptions
A 2025 NIST survey of 401 U.S. smart-home users compared five categories: voice assistants, thermostats, security devices, sensors, and lighting. For sensors, 70% agreed or strongly agreed that most devices in the category were secure, while 61% said most were privacy-protecting. These are participants’ perceptions, not technical tests or audits of products.

The results do not establish that sensors are technically safer than voice assistants, nor do they identify the privacy or security of any particular model. NIST cautions that the U.S. findings may not generalize to other countries or device categories. A separate 2020 NIST qualitative study interviewed 40 smart-home users and found varied, often unclear understandings of how data are collected and used; that interview study is not a prevalence estimate.

Practical steps to reduce risk
Use the controls the manufacturer provides, and check the documentation for your model because settings and procedures vary. These measures can reduce exposure, but none guarantees security.
- Secure accounts and devices. Set strong, unique passwords wherever the device or its account supports them. Review account access and remove people who no longer need it.
- Review privacy and security options. During setup and afterward, check what can be shared, which alerts are enabled, and whether access can be restricted. Follow current manufacturer instructions for changing settings.
- Limit retention where possible. If the app or service offers retention, deletion, or export controls, decide what you need and use the available options.
- Install updates. Keep the device firmware and companion app current when updates are offered. Check the maker’s support information for how updates are delivered and whether the model remains supported.
- Choose placement thoughtfully. Consider what a sensor could reveal from its location and who may have physical access to it. Avoid placing it where its function is unnecessary.
- Check alert recipients and shared access. Confirm who can receive notifications or use linked accounts, and remove unused access where the product provides that control.
How to assess a product before buying
A broad privacy statement or cybersecurity profile is a starting point, not proof that a particular product is private or secure. NIST IR 8425 describes cybersecurity capabilities commonly needed for consumer IoT products; it is a profile of desired outcomes, not a certification of every retail device. NIST’s December 2025 overview says related smart-home guidance draws on the Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, Privacy Framework 1.0, and IR 8425. Those frameworks help organize questions but do not establish a specific sensor’s practices.
