Smart and intelligent can both describe strong mental ability, but intelligent is broader while smart can suggest quickness, practical savvy or other meanings.

When describing a person, smart and intelligent often mean much the same thing. The usual distinction is one of emphasis: intelligent is the broader, more neutral word and can stress reasoning through unfamiliar problems; smart can suggest quick thinking or practical savvy. These are tendencies, not fixed rules.

How are “smart” and “intelligent” different?

The American Heritage Dictionary associates intelligent with handling new problems and using reasoning and inference effectively. It describes smart as quick intelligence, often with an implication of being ready to look after one’s own interests. Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries calls intelligent the most general term among related adjectives such as clever, brilliant, smart and bright.

That makes intelligent a useful choice when you mean broad mental ability or effective reasoning. Smart may put more emphasis on quickness or shrewdness. But the boundary is flexible: a person can be called smart or intelligent in many of the same situations.

Which word should you use?

If you want to emphasize… A natural choice Why
General mental ability Either word Both commonly describe someone with strong mental ability.
Reasoning through an unfamiliar problem Intelligent American Heritage connects the word with coping with new problems through reasoning and inference.
Quick thinking or practical self-interest Smart American Heritage notes these common implications.
A broad, neutral description Intelligent Oxford describes it as the most general term in its synonym group.

These are guides to emphasis, not a formula. It is too rigid to claim that smart always means practical while intelligent always means academic; dictionary accounts support common connotations, not that categorical split.

Why “smart” depends more on context

Smart has meanings beyond mental ability. It can describe a stylish appearance or a cheeky manner; as a verb, it can mean to hurt. So a phrase such as “a smart outfit” is about appearance, not intelligence. Check the surrounding words to tell which sense is intended. Dictionary.com’s entry for smart covers these distinct uses.

How the meanings developed

The word smart has a history of senses related to quickness and sharpness. The Online Etymology Dictionary records human-related senses such as “quick, active, intelligent, clever” from the 1620s and a device-related sense of behaving as though guided by intelligence from 1972. These are recorded attestations, not dates when the meanings were necessarily invented. The history helps explain why the word now applies both to people and, in phrases such as “smart device,” to technology.
