Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a practical smart home starter kit under $200, start with a compatible voice assistant or Matter controller, two smart plugs, and two dimmable smart bulbs. A September 2026 guide estimates roughly $150–$175 for that configuration and about $180–$200 with two more plugs, but those are ballpark estimates—not a live shopping cart or a guarantee that tax will keep the total under $200.
What to buy first
A small setup is easier to configure and test than a full home of connected devices. Begin with one controller or speaker, two smart plugs, and two bulbs. Plugs can make compatible lamps or other simple appliances controllable; bulbs add app or voice control to lighting. The right first devices depend on which platform you already use and the exact models’ compatibility.

The September 2026 estimates in Online Tech Tips’ budget guide put a hub speaker at $25–$50, a two-pack of Matter plugs at $25–$35, and a two-pack of Matter dimmable bulbs at $30–$45. The guide estimates a complete setup with two plugs, two bulbs, and one hub at about $150–$175. Adding another two-pack of plugs brings its estimate to about $180–$200. These are the guide’s estimates, not verified October 2026 retailer prices. Promotions, availability, and tax can change the amount you actually pay.
Choose the ecosystem before the devices
If you already use Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, or SmartThings, treat that as a starting point—not proof that every device will work. Matter is designed to let compatible devices work across supported platforms, and TP-Link documents support for Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, and SmartThings on its Matter products. Its documentation also describes Matter multi-admin, which lets a compatible device be controlled from more than one platform. Support and available features still vary by exact model, so check the product’s compatibility details before purchasing.

For a device’s full feature set, TP-Link recommends setting up its Matter-enabled product in the Tapo or Kasa app first, then adding it to a third-party Matter platform if desired. Its guidance explains that a Matter hub may be a standalone device or built into a speaker, display, or router. See TP-Link’s Matter guidance for its setup and multi-admin details.
Know whether you need Matter, Thread, or both
A Matter controller and a Thread border router do different jobs. Google says a Matter hub is needed to set up Matter devices and control or automate them remotely. A Thread device, meanwhile, needs a hub with a built-in Thread border router to connect to the network. A device or speaker being described as a hub does not by itself establish that it supports Thread.

Google’s device information lists Nest Mini and Nest Audio as Google Home Matter hubs for Wi-Fi devices. It lists Google TV Streamer (4K), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, and Nest Wifi Pro as hubs with Wi-Fi and Thread. Check Google’s current device information against the needs of the specific devices you plan to use; product support can change.

Check Wi-Fi and setup requirements
Read the networking requirements for each exact model before buying. Amazon says most smart-home Wi-Fi devices only work on 2.4 GHz, so a device may not join a network configured only for 5 GHz. Confirm that your router provides the required band and that you know how the manufacturer expects setup to be completed. Amazon’s consumer smart-home setup guide also describes adding a device through the Alexa app and recommends checking for the “Works with Alexa” badge when choosing Alexa-compatible products.
Amazon’s Matter documentation includes lighting and smart plugs among supported categories. That category-level support does not guarantee that every plug or bulb works with every platform or exposes every feature. Check both the product’s exact compatibility listing and the controller’s requirements; Amazon’s Matter documentation covers its supported categories.
