Smart Home Control: How to Reduce Your Dependence on Amazon and Google

A practical guide to reducing reliance on Alexa and Google Home with local-first control, device-by-device compatibility checks and a gradual migration plan.

You do not have to replace every Alexa- or Google-connected device to take more control of your smart home. Start by identifying which devices can work locally, then move compatible lights, sensors and switches to a local-first controller while keeping the voice assistants you still find useful.

What changes when a smart home runs locally?

With a local-first setup, a controller runs on hardware in your home and can communicate with compatible devices over your home network or a local radio protocol. Home Assistant describes its approach this way: “Home Assistant runs on your own hardware in your home, and your data is stored locally.” See its privacy FAQ.

Local control can reduce dependence on a device maker’s cloud, but it is not a blanket property of a hub or brand. The particular device and its integration must support local communication. Home Assistant lists supported Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread and ESPHome devices as capable of local communication without internet; cloud-only integrations cannot reach their devices during an internet outage. Its offline FAQ explains these limits.

Some services remain internet-dependent even in a local-first home. Home Assistant Cloud remote access, and its integrations with Google Home and Alexa, require internet. An outage can therefore leave locally connected devices controllable at home while removing remote access or voice-assistant features.

Audit your devices before replacing anything

Make a list of the devices you rely on and how you currently control each one. Check the manufacturer’s app, product documentation and Home Assistant’s integration information to determine whether the device uses a cloud connection or supports local control. A device appearing in an app does not, by itself, establish that it can keep working without that service.

  • Note the device type and the functions you actually use, such as dimming, motion detection, temperature readings or energy reporting.
  • Check whether its integration communicates locally or requires the manufacturer’s cloud.
  • Identify any radio requirements: Zigbee and Z-Wave devices need compatible coordinators; Thread-based devices need a Thread border router.
  • Confirm that the integration exposes the specific features you care about. A local or Matter integration may not provide every feature available through the manufacturer’s own connection.

Home Assistant’s official offline FAQ points to its Works with Home Assistant program for devices tested for local control. Treat compatibility as device- and feature-specific rather than assuming that every product using the same protocol behaves identically.

Choose a controller that fits your setup

Home Assistant is one local-first option, not the only possible architecture. Home Assistant recommends Green as a plug-and-play hub for most users; it comes with the software preinstalled. If you already have suitable hardware or want a different setup, Home Assistant also lists installation paths using a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC or virtual machine. The software is free; hardware and optional services are separate choices. Details are on the Home Assistant Green page.

Green does not make cloud-dependent devices local, nor does it supply every radio a setup may need. Before choosing a path, weigh the capabilities you need against setup effort and any required coordinator or border router.

Check protocol support before buying devices

Matter

Matter is designed to support local control, but the Matter logo alone does not guarantee that every product feature will be available through every controller. Check that the device itself supports Matter and verify which functions its Home Assistant integration exposes. Home Assistant’s Matter documentation describes the platform’s support.

Thread

Thread is a networking protocol, not proof that a device supports Matter. A Thread-based Matter device also needs a Thread border router on the network. Check both the product’s Matter support and the required Thread infrastructure before buying; a Thread logo by itself is not enough.

Zigbee, Z-Wave and ESPHome

These can be part of a local setup when the specific device and Home Assistant integration support local communication. Zigbee and Z-Wave typically require a compatible coordinator, while ESPHome devices communicate over the network. Home Assistant names its Connect ZBT-2 as an optional accessory for Zigbee, Thread and Matter; it is relevant only if your chosen devices and setup need those protocols.

Move control gradually and keep useful voice features

You can migrate one device category at a time rather than making a whole-home switch. Start with a small group of devices whose local compatibility is clear, add them to the controller, and check that the features you use work as expected. Then decide whether to move more devices or leave some on their current cloud integrations.

  1. Inventory: Record your devices, essential features and current control method.
  2. Verify: Check the specific device’s local-integration support, protocol and feature coverage.
  3. Prepare: Install Home Assistant on Green or suitable existing hardware, and add a coordinator or border router if the devices require one.
  4. Transition: Set up compatible devices in Home Assistant and confirm local control on your home network.
  5. Retain selectively: If desired, expose compatible devices to Alexa or Google Home so existing voice control can coexist with the local controller. Home Assistant documents these options at voice control.

Keeping a voice assistant in the mix is a trade-off, not a contradiction: it can preserve a familiar interface, but Home Assistant’s Google Home and Alexa integrations and its Cloud remote-access feature need internet. You can choose which conveniences are worth that dependency.
